The volume marks the crystallization of a wide-spread feeling that the addresses and lectures of our honored fellow-citizen, Judge Arthur A. Putnam, should be preserved in permanent form and made available for general use. These lectures and addresses are a treasure-house of historical data, and are replete with wit, eloquence, and patriotic fervor, and should by no means be lost to posterity. There was also a general desire on the part of the community to pay its tribute of esteem and affection to our Nestor, who for so many years has entertained and thrilled not only local but national audiences. Of the more than forty addresses that have been delivered from time to time during the passing years, ten have been chosen as especially worthy of place in this honorary volume. As is the case in every expression of public sentiment, it was necessary for a few persons to represent the larger circle of those interested in the project.
