Download or read book The Visible Poor written by Joel Blau and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-05-13 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking an in-depth look at the causes of homelessness in the United States, Joel Blau disproves the convenient myths that most homeless are crazy, drug addicts, or lazy misfits who brought their suffering upon themselves. He shows that the current crisis was an inevitable result of economic and political changes in recent decades, systematically reviewing the explanations offered by researchers, politicians and pundits, from the deinstitutionalization of mental patients in the 1960s to the gentrification of urban neighborhoods in the 1970s to the evisceration of federal spending on social welfare in the 1980s. Blau argues that current government policies at every level are mired in pointless headcounting and quick-fix solutions that only push the homeless out of sight without touching the underlying causes. He advocates social reforms ranging form a national standard for welfare benefits, a higher minimum wage, and establishment of a social sector for non-profit, affordable housing. A powerful contribution to public debate on homelessness, The Visible Poor must be read by concerned citizens as well as by policy-makers and advocates.

Book Synopsis The Unequal Homeless by : Joanne Passaro
Download or read book The Unequal Homeless written by Joanne Passaro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unequal Homeless explores the persistence, as opposed to the occurrence, of homelessness. With this focus, which is absent in most of the contemporary homelessness literature, the author shows how cultural expressions of beliefs about gender difference help to perpetuate the homelessness of particular groups of people in New York City. The people who are persistently homeless in New York are, overwhelmingly, black men. The reason, Passaro contends, is that homelessness is not simply an economic predicament, but a cultural and moral location as well.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993, this book is a detailed comparative examination of the housing issue by housing experts, looking at the USA, UK, Germany, the Netherlands and France. The volume offers an excellent blend of critical analysis and practical policy recommendations, including a better targeting of tax concessions, a move back to social housing more diverse than in the past and measures for reducing homelessness. Perennial issues which remain as pertinent today as when the book was first published are also discussed: homelessness, housing affordability for people on low incomes, changes in housing markets.
