Little has been written about how researchers of urban schools and their constituencies effectively navigate these complex elements, design a culturally sensitive and responsive project, and acquire meaningful data. What are some of the critically important issues a researcher should consider when working with urban schools? What should be a researcher's commitment to the urban communities in which they conduct research? How can a researcher develop a trusting relationship in an environment justifiably distrustful of outsiders? These and other inquiries shape the contours of this edited volume. As educators and policy makers take a closer examination at urban schools and their successes, research of these unique settings assumes a more prominent role. For academics, both novice and experienced, establishing and maintaining rapport within these environments often require greater attention than qualitative or quantitative research books accord. Authors in this compilation share lessons learned about power, privilege, and their meanings as they pertain to conducting research in and with urban settings. Book excerpt: Results were not significant for Student Cohesiveness, Enjoyment of Science Lessons, and Science Achievement. Qualitative data were also gathered to provide evidence and support for the quantitative results. Classroom observations, student reflective journals, and student interviews provided additional data that supported the quantitative findings. The fourth stage of this study involved the associations between integrated science learning environments and students' attitudes toward science through simple correlation and multiple regression analyses. The sample for this portion of the study was 1,105 (800 non-LEP and 305 LEP) students in 54 classes in two neighboring public elementary schools in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Statistically significant associations were found between Grade 2-5 students' perceptions of the integrated science learning environment and attitudes toward science. Qualitative results substantiate the quantitative findings of associations with attitudes for involvement, equity, and investigation for both LEP and non-LEP students. This learning environment study is significant because it involved both LEP and non-LEP Grade 2-5 students' perceptions of their integrated science classroom environments, attitudes toward science and achievement. Another contribution of my study is that it established the validity and reliability of widely-applicable Spanish versions of the WIHIC and the TOSRA when used in the United States with elementary school students.

Book excerpt: This document on the working conditions of urban teachers reports data from a survey of 31 elementary, middle, and secondary schools in five urban school districts. More than 400 interviews were conducted with teachers, school administrators, central office personnel, district officials, board members, and union officials. The observations, interviews, and analyses confirm that, in most of these schools, the working conditions of teachers are bleak and would not be tolerated in other professions. Among the findings are the following: (1) physical conditions are sub-standard because of a lack of maintenance, repair, and space; (2) safety is not a serious problem to teachers, except in very depressed neighborhoods; (3) teachers do not have even the basic resources needed, let alone access to new technologies; (4) teachers consider hiring more personnel to address the personal problems of students a higher priority than hiring more teachers to reduce class size; (5) teachers generally understand the cultural gulf between them and their students but are unable to deal with what they consider aberrant student behavior; (6) teachers perceive that they are losing control over what they teach, primarily because of district-wide testing policies although they are in control of how they teach; and (7) teachers have little confidence in supervision, staff development, or central office leadership. Characteristics of good working conditions are identified. Tables illustrate the data. Appendices compare these findings with those of other studies, provide a list of about 100 references, describe the methodology, and compare school effects. (BJV)
