Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New and General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 8 of 12 Kepler (John), the greatest astronomer perhaps that any age has produced, was born in the Wiel in the dutch of Wirtemberg, the 27th Dec. 1751. His father, Henry Kepler, was descended from a family, which had raised themselves under the emperors by their military services, and was himself an officer of rank in the army; but afterwards, experiencing ill fortune, was obliged to sell all he had, and support himself and his family by keeping a public-house. He died in 1590, and left his son John to take what care of himself he could. His education had been hitherto neglected, as may easily be imagined; but, having a very great genius, and as great a desire to cultivate it, he entered upon his studies in philosophy at Tubingen, immediately upon his father's death, and, two years after, pursued the mathematics in the same university, under the famous Michael Moestlin. He made so great progress, and became so famous, that in 1503 he was invited to Gratz in Styria, to teach the mathematics there. He then applied himself entirely to astronomy, and published from time to time several works, the principal of which shall be mentioned immediately. In 1597, he entered into the married state, which at first created him great uneasiness, from a dispute which arose about his wife's fortune; and, the year after, he was banished from Gratz on account of his religion, but afterwards recalled, and restored to his former dignity. It is not, however, on this account Only that he is entitled to the esteem of the professors and admirers of the arts. He determined to excite, among his Countrymen, a good taste, and, by proposing to their imitation the te mains of the ancient masters, to elevate their views beyond the forms of common life, to this contemplation of that ideal beauty which alone distinguishes works of art from mere mechanical productions. With this view he appro priated his gardens in Florence to the establishment of an academy for the study of the antique, which be furnished with a profusion of statues, busts, and other relies of art. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New and General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 10 of 15 Loyola (Ignatius Of), the founder of the order of Jesuits, was born in 1491, of a considerable family, at the castle of Loyola, in the province of Guipuscoa in Spain. He was educated in the court of Ferdinand and Isabella, and entered very early into the military profession. He was addicted to all the excesses too common in that line of life, but was at the same time a good officer, and one who sought occasions to distinguish himself. His valour was conspicuous at Pampeluna, in 1521, when it was besieged by the French, and there he had his leg broken by a cannon-mot. During the confinement occasioned by this wound, he formed a resolution of renouncin the world, of travelling to Jerusalem, and dedicating his life to the service of God. He is said to have imbibed his ardour of zeal by reading the legends of the saints; though some have denied that he knew the use of letters. But whether he read, or had these things read to him, he certainly conceived an ardour of religious activity, which has not often been equalled. He had no sooner received his cure than he went to hang up his arms over the altar of the blessed Virgin at Montserrat, to whom he devoted his services on March 24, 1522: for he carried the laws of chivalry to his religious observances. In his way, he disputed with a Moor on the perpetual virginity of the blessed Virgin, in whose cause he was in great danger of destroying his opponent. Having watched all night at Montserrat, sometimes standing, and sometimes kneeling, and having devoted himself most earnestly to her, he set out before day-break, in a pilgrim's habit to Manresa. Here he took his lodging among the poor of the town hospital, and he practised mortifications of every kind for above a year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 3 Newton (john) an episcopal clergy man of Calvinistic principles, born in London in 1795. He did not enjoy the advantages of a regular education, having, in the early part of his life, been taken to sea by his father, who was master of a merchant-ship. Becoming commander of a vessel employed in the slave trade, he made several voyages to the coast of Africa, for the purpose of carrying on that dis gusting trafl'ic, and in the mean time contracted habits of dissipation and vice, which the bru talizing scenes he witnessed tended to origi nate and confirm. At length he grew serious and fond of study, and having relinquished the occupation of a mariner, he, in 1755, obtained the office of tide-surveyor of the port'of Liver pool. There he remained several years, and during the latter part of that period he be came a preacher, and made some abortive at tempts to gain a settlement as pastor to a dis senting congregation. In 1764 he was ordained a clergyman of the church of England, by the bishop of Lincoln, and immediately after, through the intervention of lord Dartmouth, he was appointed curate of Olney in Bucking hamshire. During a residence of fifteen years at that place, he formed an intimate friendship with the poet Cowper, whence originated a vo lume of hymns for public worship, their joint composition. In 1779 Mr Newton removed to London, on being promoted to the rectory of St Mary Woolnoth, which he held till his death in December 1007. He was the author of a Review of Ecclesiastical History, 1770, 8vo Messiah, or a Series of Discourses on the Scriptural Passages which form the Ora torio of Handel, 1786, 2 vols. 8vo and other works, which have been printed toge ther, in 6 vols. 8vo and 12 vols. 12mm Evang. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New and General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 4 of 8: Containing an Account of the Lives and Writings of the Most Eminent Persons in Every Nation in the World, Particularly the British and Irish, From the Earliest Accounts of Time to the Present Period; Wherein Their Remarkable Actions and Sufferings, Their He commanded, on that occasion, the Elizabeth Bonaventure, and signalized himself in a remarkable manner; especially in the last engagement with the Spaniards, near Calais. Queen Elizabeth was so pleased with his good services, that she granted him a commission, dated October 4, 1588, to pursue his intended voyage to the South Sea; and, for his greater honour and encouragement, lent him one of her own royal ships, named the Golden Lion, to be the admiral. This he victualled and furnished at his own charge; and sailed about the end of October, attended with many brave English gentlemen. In the Channel he took a ship of Dunkirk, named the Hare, laden with merchandize for Spain, which he sent home; but contrary winds at first, and afterwards a violent storm, which forced him to cut his main-mast by the board, deprived him of all farther hopes and ability to prosecute his designs on the Spanish coasts, so that he returned to England. However, not discouraged by this unhappy disappointment, he undertook a third voyage to the West Indies in 1589. For that purpose he obtained the queen's leave, and on ship of the royal navy, called the Victory; to which adding three other small ships, furnished at his own expence with about four hundred men, and all necessaries, he set sail from Plymouth the 18th of June. He now made several valuable seizures, but experienced all the hardships of a tedious voyage. The earl, in attempting to seize a Brazil ship, seeing captain Lister had boldly carried off the companion, had two parts of his own men killed or wounded, and received himself three shots upon his shield, and a fourth on his side, though not deep; his head was likewise broken with stones, and all covered with blood, and both his head and legs were much burned with granadoes; notwithstanding which, they had the good fortune to make themselves masters of a Portugueze ship, of 110 tons, freighted with sugar and Brazil wood; and two days after of another, between three and four hundred tons, loaden with hides, cochineal, sugar, china dishes, and silver. After being now kept out at sea by storms and contrary winds, and reduced to the greatest extremities, he arrived safe at Falmouth on the 29th of December. In 1591 his lordship undertook a fourth voyage to the coast of Spain, with five ships, fitted out at his own charge. He sailed from England in May, and, in his way to the Spanish coasts, found several Dutch ships coming from Lisbon loaden with spices, which he took out of them. These spices he determined to send to England, in a ship guarded by the Golden Noble, his rear-admiral; but they were taken in a calm, by some Portugueze gallies from Penicha, one of the captains, with several of the men, slain, and the rest carried prisoners to Penicha, and from thence to Lisbon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New and General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 10 Porphyrius, a philosopher of great name among the Ancients, was born A. D. 233. in the Reign of Alexander Severus. He was of Tyre, a city in Ph nicia; and had the name of Malchus, in common with his father, who was a Syroph nician. St. Jerom and St. Augustin have called him Bataneotes: whence Fabricius suspects, that the real place of his nativity was Batanea, a town of Syria; and that he was carried from thence with a colony to Tyre. He went to Athens, where he had the famous Longinus for his master in rhetoric, who changed his Syrian name Malchus, as not very pleasing to Grecian ears, into that of Porphyrius, which answered to it in Greek. Afterwards he proceeded to Rome, where, at thirty years of age, he heard the celebrated philosopher Plotinus; whose life he has written, and inserted in it many particulars concerning himself.
