He was educated in the court of Ferdinand and Ifabella, and entered very early into the military profeflion. He was addieted to all the excefles too common in that line of life, but was at the fame time a good officer, and one who fought occafions to diftin guifh himfelf. His valour was confpicuous at Pampeluna, in 1521, when it was befieged by the French, and there he had his leg broken by a cannon-(hot. During the confinement occafioned by this wound, he formed a refolution of renouncing the world, of travelling to Jerufalem, and dedicating his life to the fervice of God. He is (aid to have imbibed his ardpur of zeal by read ing the legends of the faints; though fome have denied that he knew the ufe of letters. But whether he read, or had there things read to him, he certainly conceived an ardour of reli gions aetivity, which has not often been equalled. He had no fooner received his cure than he went to hang up his arms over the altar of the blefied Virgin at Montferrat, to Whom he devoted his fervices on March 24, I 522: for he carried the laws of chivalry to his religious Obfervances. In his way, he difputed with a Moor on the perpetual virginity of the bleffed Virgin, in whofe caufe he was in great danger of defiroyinf; his opponent. Having watched all night at Montferrat, fometimes fianding, and fometimes kneeling, and having devoted himfelf mof't earneflly to her, he fet out before day-break, in a pilgrim's habit to Manrefa. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 30: Containing an Historical and Critical Account of the Lives and Writings of the Most Eminent Persons in Every Nation; Particularly the British and Irish Treby (george), a learned judge, was born, as Wood thinks, at or near Plympton in Devonshire in 1644, and was admitted a commoner of Exeter college, Oxford, in 1660. After studying some time here, he left college without taking a degree, as, we have repeatedly had occasion to observe, was usual with young gentlemen intended for the law; and went to the Inner Temple. After being admitted to the bar, he had much practice, and was accounted a. Good common lawyer. In 1678 and 1679, he sat in par liament as representative for Plympton, and in the last mentioned year was appointed chairman of the committee of secrecy for the investigation of the popish plot, and was in 1680 one of the managers in the impeachment of lord Stafford. In December of the same year, when sir George Jeffries was dismissed from the recordership of London, Mr. Treby was elected in his room, and in January 1681 the king conferred on him the honour of knighthood but when the 9c warmnto issued, and the City charter, for which he pleaded along with Pollexfen, as withheld, he was de prived of the recordership in Oct. 1685. On the revolu tion, king William restored him to this office, and he had the honour of addressing his majesty, in the absence of the lord mayor, sir John Chapman, who was confined by sick ness. His very able speech on this occasion was published in the Fourth collection of papers relating to the present juncture of affairs in England, 1688, 4to, and in Bohun's History of the Desertion, 1689, 4to. In March 1688 he was made solicitor-general, and the following year attorney-general. In April 1692 he was called to the rank of serjeant, and in May following was promoted to be chief justice of the Common Pleas, on which he resigned the office of recorder. This learned and upright lawyer died in March 1701-2, aged fifty - six. His son and grandson, of the same names, represented Plympton and Dartmouth. It is not, however, on this account Only that he is entitled to the esteem of the professors and admirers of the arts. He determined to excite, among his Countrymen, a good taste, and, by proposing to their imitation the te mains of the ancient masters, to elevate their views beyond the forms of common life, to this contemplation of that ideal beauty which alone distinguishes works of art from mere mechanical productions. With this view he appro priated his gardens in Florence to the establishment of an academy for the study of the antique, which be furnished with a profusion of statues, busts, and other relies of art. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 3 Newton (john) an episcopal clergy man of Calvinistic principles, born in London in 1795. He did not enjoy the advantages of a regular education, having, in the early part of his life, been taken to sea by his father, who was master of a merchant-ship. Becoming commander of a vessel employed in the slave trade, he made several voyages to the coast of Africa, for the purpose of carrying on that dis gusting trafl'ic, and in the mean time contracted habits of dissipation and vice, which the bru talizing scenes he witnessed tended to origi nate and confirm. At length he grew serious and fond of study, and having relinquished the occupation of a mariner, he, in 1755, obtained the office of tide-surveyor of the port'of Liver pool. There he remained several years, and during the latter part of that period he be came a preacher, and made some abortive at tempts to gain a settlement as pastor to a dis senting congregation. In 1764 he was ordained a clergyman of the church of England, by the bishop of Lincoln, and immediately after, through the intervention of lord Dartmouth, he was appointed curate of Olney in Bucking hamshire. During a residence of fifteen years at that place, he formed an intimate friendship with the poet Cowper, whence originated a vo lume of hymns for public worship, their joint composition. In 1779 Mr Newton removed to London, on being promoted to the rectory of St Mary Woolnoth, which he held till his death in December 1007. He was the author of a Review of Ecclesiastical History, 1770, 8vo Messiah, or a Series of Discourses on the Scriptural Passages which form the Ora torio of Handel, 1786, 2 vols. 8vo and other works, which have been printed toge ther, in 6 vols. 8vo and 12 vols. 12mm Evang. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Who's Who in Pennsylvania: A Biographical Dictionary of Contemporaries The former edition met with wide and generous recognition, and the present one, endeavoring to present not only such new names of importance as have achieved distinction in the interim, but also to give more perfect accounts of those whose life-sketches have been retained from the First Edition, is believed to be a marked improvement over its predecessor, the original volume. The utility of what are known as Who's Who books, of which the Lon don Who's Who, now in its sixtieth year of successful annual publication, may be regarded as the progenitor, is now everywhere recognised, the Ger mans and French having entered the field for their respective countries. The application of the idea to the representation of the notables of a. Single State began with the publication of Who's Who in New York City and State, by L. R. Hamersly Co. (of which the Fourth Edition is now in preparation), followed by the issue from the same publishing house of Who's Who in Pennsylvania. The present edition is virtually a new book, such matter as has been retained from the former issue having been in almost every case rewritten, amplified or condensed as seemed to be most appropriate to the purpose of the publication, which is to furnish a complete, accurate and reliable biographical dictionary of contemporary Pennsylvanians.
