They bought lands on the banks of the Delaware river from the Indians and made some settlements, but were not allowed long to enjoy their homes in peace and The Dutch of New York, then New Netherland, wiri th -same Spirit that afflicted all European nations in the i4th and isth centuries, for oppressing their weaker neigh bors and the acquisition of territory, attacked the Swedes on the Delaware. And brought them under their rule. This was in the year 1653. Short time thereafter, the Dutch in turn had to yield to a stronger arm, not only their dishonorably acquired possessions on the Delaware, but also their whole power in America. The English took possession Of the coun try, and held the same uninterruptedly, with the exception of a short period in 1673. Down to the revolution of I776.'
