Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Best Fiction in English Where American novels have been published in England with an altered title, or English novels with an American title, the spurious desig nation is quoted in the note.' The original titles Of foreign works of fiction are given in italics after the English title, In most cases where they are not practically identical, with the exception of Russian and other languages in which the transliteration of titles is not uniform and the information would be of triļ¬‚ing value to the ordinary reader. It is hoped that in this and other points a fair degree of accuracy has been attained, but the possibilities of error in such a compilation as the present are innumerable, and the writer can only trust that his faults Of omission and commission are not serious, and that attention will be called thereto in order that they may be reduced in a future edition. It should be noted that books published since 3ist December, 191 I, do not come within his present purview. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Best Historical Novels and Tales Four years ago (vide Dr. Baker's kindly allusion in the Preface to his admirable work just named), it was hinted that the Guide was somewhat lacking in its degree of com prehensiveness such a criticism could scarcely be maintained now. If there is still exclusion to some extent, there is (fourth edition) inclusion to a very much larger extent. I have allowed the utmost elasticity in my later decisions as to his torical qualification. How comprehensive has been my selection, may be judged from the fact that, while in my enlarged third edition the annotated lists covered between twelve and thirteen hundred novels and tales, I have now passed under review about seventeen hundred more. In the total of nearly three thousand novels and tales thus reached, over two thousand are not to be found in Mr. Bowen's catalogue, and some thirteen hundred are absent from Dr. Baker's lists. Comprehensiveness alone, however, would be a poor advantage, and I believe that, in its present form, besides being the largest bibliography of its kind, the Guide is also the most accurate. And this brings me to say a few words about certain special aims that I have striven my utmost to embody in the large supplementary portion of this edition. More and more, I have come to see that, in a reference book of the kind making its appeal to readers of all ages and of varying tastes - there should be large catholicity. And nowhere is such inclusiveness more desirable than in the case of juvenile stories: the shortest and simplest tale, if it in any way illustrates a bygone period, may prove of use and of interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature: An Introduction and Guide to the Best English Books; A Handbook for Schools and Readers All my life I have loved, owned, collected and read books. The motive back of these activities has not, however, been any desire on my part to improve my mind. Being satisfied with my mind as it is, I have read in the spirit in which boys play ball, girls dress their dolls, men attend prize fights, and women gossip about their neigh bors. I have read, in other words, for fun; and I have found in the collection, the ownership, and the perusal of books a source of pleasure which, unlike most pleasures, is not only inexpensive and harmless but has grown deeper with time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Readers Guide to Great Twentieth-Century English Novels In varying ways, Conrad's emphasis on the individual artist's con scious mind as guide to his artistic conceptions - an anti-traditionalist position and a throwback to the philosophy of the 1890's, the time of Conrad's apprenticeship - found its counterpart in the statements of Huxley, Virginia Woolf, and Joyce. Conrad was following, in his way, Flaubert's attempt to make the novel a major artistic form, not merely a type of entertainment. Concern with form, a major French preoccu pation, did not significantly begin in England, we remember, until George Eliot, Meredith, and Conrad turned to the novel, and only the latter practiced what he theorized. After Conrad, we find several state ments of novelistic theory incorporated into the novel itself: as exam ples, Stephen's sermon on art in A Portrait, the remarks in Philip Quarles'journal in Point Counter Point, and, indirectly, the tense discussions between Loerke, the devilish creator, and Ursula and Gud run Brangwen near the end of Women in Love. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What and How to Read: A Guide to Recent English Literature, Containing a Minutely Classified List of the Best Books Published in England and America During the Past Five Years, With Critical Remarks and Suggestions, and an Introduction It is impossible to say any thing absolutely new on the use of books for self-culture. Even the epistolary treatises on the advantages of literature, written by Egyptian scribes two or three thousand years before the compilation of the First Book of Moses, contain, in general terms, the best that can be said now. However, there is always somebody still in his A B C's on some subject or other, and there will be some one also to whom a few words on What and How to Read are welcome advice. We have, fortunately, arrived at an age when book-making and reading is an absolute necessity. Every little addition to the sum of human knowledge is scattered broadcast, and every branch of science is made the subject of multifarious expositions, adapted for every variety of intellect. To show a supercilious disrespect for the daily increasing multitude of books is not to affect superior wisdom, but to display some degree of ignorance. The times are past when it sufficed to sit for a while at the feet of a wise man in order to hear all that was known. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to British and American Novels: Being a Comprehensive Manual of All Forms of Popular Fiction in Great Britain, Australasia, and America From Its Commencement Down to 1894 This book is the result of thirty-six years continuous study of British, American, and Australasian fiction. Obviously few general readers in these busy days have leisure to read the novels of the past; and yet some knowledge of these is important, while, through ignorance of how to select judiciously amid the myriads of old or comparatively old novels and romances, the contemporary reader is sorely perplexed and inevitably deprived of very much pleasure and profit, through want of the necessary guide. The object of this manual is to place before readers, in succinct form, a trustworthy account, brief as is compatible with lucidity, of most of the principal novels and romances of the past. Readers can select thence whatever appears most suited to their tastes, or remain content with the information here given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History in Fiction: A Guide to the Best Historical Romances, Sagas, Novels, and Tales It is hoped that the arrangement Of the books by the country and date of the subject, with the appendix at the foot Of the page giving contem porary or nearly contemporary stories when such are available, will prove of use to lecturers, teach ers and students, and also to the general reader who may perhaps be induced by reading a group Of novels about a period, a man, or an event, to take a more serious interest in history. Some Of the works included lie very near the borderland Of history and romance, if not right on the other side. Many of the Icelandic sagas, for instance, are substantially history, though cast by the drama tic instinct oi the chronicler in an artistic mould. Much the same must be said Of several of Defoe's narratives. But the principle Of inclusion has been simply this: when in doubt, it is better to leave in than turn out. The entries of books have been made approximately according to the chronological order of succession of the chief events or the periods dealt with but this arrange ment is Of course not more than approximate, exactness being practically unattainable. Every effort has been made to fix the dates Of the period with which each work is concerned; but, as can well be imagined, with such an irresponsible Class Of literature as historical romance, this has been a difficult and deceptive task, and it is as well to apologize for inevitable inaccuracies beforehand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tendencies of the Modern Novel The essays which appear in the present volume were originally published as a series in the Fort nightly Review. So far at least as the novel in other countries is concerned, they are intended not only to indicate the lines along which the younger writers of fiction have been working since the War, but also to serve as a guide and introduction, for English readers, to their most outstanding work. So far as possible an effort has been made to indicate those works of foreign authors which are available in an English translation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature A manual has been prepared which discusses the general problems of teaching literature and supplies for each chapter a large amount of additional material and suggestions for the teacher. This separate publication makes it possible to address every word in the textbook itself to the pupil. Two suggestions to the teacher, duly emphasized in the man ual, may be barely noted here. First, the teacher should give special aid to the pupil on the Opening chapters, which survey periods remote and therefore difficult for the modern reader. The first two chapters might well be studied in the class under the teacher's guidance. Second, the teacher should never separate the study of the textbook from the study of literature itself. The book strives to guide the pupils to an interested reading of the best poetry and prose. This should also be the chief aim of the teacher.
