Book excerpt: Caught between a curse and rock-hard abs. As a dhampir, Lucy Hexworth, the assistant manager at Highcragh Castle, knows she’s going to face a dilemma one night or the other. A master vampire is going to find her, and then they’re going to turn her. Lucy doesn’t want to be turned. But when her worst nightmare finally knocks at the castle gates, he isn’t at all what she’d anticipated. First, he’s very sweet. The threat he brings comes with excellent manners and an unrelenting kindness that seems too good to be true. And then, he’s not alone. The very same night, a dark magic practitioner steps in, intent on crushing the hidden evil that’s lurking within the castle walls. Soon the three of them are hunting curses and taunting each other, weaving their own special kind of delicious trap, tainted with blood, dark magic and danger. If they want happiness, they’re going to have to fight for it. This fourth, novel-length episode in the Monster R&R steamy paranormal romance series stands alone proudly. It contains magical tropical vines, damaged yet resilient baddies, a very strong dress code, two men and a woman in love, more gothic castle fun, and enough heat to forge a curse.

Williams argues that the Jewish martyrological ideas, codified in 2 and 4 Maccabees and in selected texts in LXX Daniel 3, provide an important background to understanding Paul's statements about the cursed Christ in Gal. 3.13, and the soteriological benefits that his death achieves for Jews and Gentiles in Galatians. Williams further argues that Paul modifies Jewish martyrology to fit his exegetical, polemical, and theological purposes, in order to persuade the Galatians not to embrace the 'other' gospel of their opponents. In addition to providing a detailed and up to date history of research on the scholarship of Gal. 3.13, Williams provides five arguments throughout this volume related to the scriptural, theological and conceptual, lexical, grammatical and polemical points of contact, and finally the discontinuities between Galatians and Jewish martyrological ideas. Drawing on literature from Second Temple traditions to directly compare with Gal. 3.13, Williams adds new insights to Paul's defense of his Torah-free-gentile-inclusive gospel, and his rhetoric against his opponents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How old is prejudice against black people? Were the racist attitudes that fueled the Atlantic slave trade firmly in place 700 years before the European discovery of sub-Saharan Africa? In this groundbreaking book, David Goldenberg seeks to discover how dark-skinned peoples, especially black Africans, were portrayed in the Bible and by those who interpreted the Bible--Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Unprecedented in rigor and breadth, his investigation covers a 1,500-year period, from ancient Israel (around 800 B.C.E.) to the eighth century C.E., after the birth of Islam. By tracing the development of anti-Black sentiment during this time, Goldenberg uncovers views about race, color, and slavery that took shape over the centuries--most centrally, the belief that the biblical Ham and his descendants, the black Africans, had been cursed by God with eternal slavery. Goldenberg begins by examining a host of references to black Africans in biblical and postbiblical Jewish literature. From there he moves the inquiry from Black as an ethnic group to black as color, and early Jewish attitudes toward dark skin color. He goes on to ask when the black African first became identified as slave in the Near East, and, in a powerful culmination, discusses the resounding influence of this identification on Jewish, Christian, and Islamic thinking, noting each tradition's exegetical treatment of pertinent biblical passages. Authoritative, fluidly written, and situated at a richly illuminating nexus of images, attitudes, and history, The Curse of Ham is sure to have a profound and lasting impact on the perennial debate over the roots of racism and slavery, and on the study of early Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

It shows how during the Reformation period, the story began to be interpreted in new ways, that provided justification for the rapidly expanding, and extremely lucrative, Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Skilfully weaving together elements of theology, literature and history, this book not only provides a fascinating insight into the ways that issues of religion, economics and race could collide in the Reformation world, but also provides essential reading for anyone wishing to try to comprehend the origins of arguments used to justify slavery and segregation right up to the 1960s.
