Book excerpt: Abstract: Latino immigrant families are a population facing great risks which can severely impact their overall well-being. Evidence suggests that parent education and social support programs are an effective way for decreasing some of those risks. The purpose of this project was to identify a potential parenting program, seek potential funding sources to implement such program, and write a grant to fund the parenting program for Aurora Elementary School in the city of Los Angeles, California. The Strengthening Families Program was chosen after revision of best practices in parenting programs for Latino families found in the literature. The program is designed as a group with parenting education, social support, substance use prevention, and parent-child interaction components. The Joseph Drown Foundation was identified as the potential funding source. Social Work implications are discussed. The actual submission and/or funding of this grant was not a requirement for the successful completion of this project.

A review of the research indicates that Spanish speaking parents do not actively participate in the Individual Education Plans (IEP) of their children. This project focused on the development of parent workshops developed in Spanish for presentation to parents and English for the purposes of this project. The workshops were designed to inform parents about the IEP process, their right to question the process and solicit help from a Spanish speaking Special Education Teacher. The workshops developed for this project will be helpful in informing and empowering Spanish speaking parents to participate in their students' IEP process because they will have been given the questions to ask, the language to use and the understanding that it is their right to pursue the very best education for their children.

Book excerpt: The author presented results from a qualitative study of the changes experienced by 13 Latino parents of adolescents in East Los Angeles participating in a parent training program. Data collected from classroom observations, focus groups, and interviews with the instructors of the parent training program were triangulated to determine that the skills of showing love and affection and improved communication through listening instead of yelling were changes most commonly reported by parent participants positively affecting the parent-child relationship. Barriers to implementing these skills included parents' assumptions regarding the parent-child relationship, culture and upbringing, and fear of unknown outcomes. Despite these barriers, there is substantial overlap between the goals of the program and the changes reported by parents. Instructors tailored the parent training curriculum to the target demographic by engaging parents in roleplaying and by sharing personal stories and examples to provide context.

Thats not surprising: in 1970 there were only 9 million Latinos (4.5% of the nations population) but today theyre fifty million strongand by 2050, that number is projected to grow to ninety-five million. So maybe its time to reflect on this important trend, not by isolating Latinos but by considering their role within the larger national context. Much of the nations attention has centered on immigration or more specifically, illegal immigration. Thats unfortunate because there is a much greater story here. For Latinos, the challenge is this: how to enhance their education levels and skills in order to be relevant in the information economy and meet the needs of the modern workplace at a time when federal, state, and local budgets are strained, if not declining. This book explains why an aging America needs Latinos. While it looks in-depth at the economic forces were facing, it focuses on strategies Latino families and communities throughout the nation can adopt to build a better future for themselves and the nation.

The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments.
