Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Makers of the Media Mind is a collection of analytical essays focusing on the most important and original ideas contributed to the field of mass communication by journalism educators. Divided into six sections representing the most prominent areas of specialization in the field, this text serves two significant purposes: first, it acquaints readers with the lives of preeminent journalism educators; second, it provides concise discussions and evaluations of the most compelling ideas those educators have to offer. The editor of, and contributors to, this text contend that ideas cannot be appreciated fully without an understanding of the creators of those same ideas. They hope that this volume's coverage of "creators" as well as concepts will demonstrate that journalism education has played a critical role in the making of the "media mind."

Book excerpt: Journalism: A Guide to the Reference Literature is a critically annotated bibliographic guide to print and electronic sources in print and broadcast journalism. The first edition was published in 1990; the second in 1997. It has been described as one of the critical reference sources in journalism today, and it is a key bibliographic guide to the literature. Choice magazine called it a benchmark publication for which there are no comparable sources. The format is similar to the second edition. What makes this edition significantly different is the separation of Commercial Databases and Internet Resources. Commercial Databases includes standard fee-based resources. The new chapter on Internet sources features Web-based resources not included in the commercial databases chapter as well as portals, other online files, listservs, newsgroups, and Web logs/blogs. All chapters have been revised, and there are significant revisions in Directories, Yearbooks, and Collections; Miscellaneous Sources; Core Periodicals; Societies and Associations; and Research Centers and Archives. The second edition has 789 entries. The third edition contains almost 1,000 entries. James Carey of Columbia University, who provided the foreword for the first two editions, has updated his foreword for this edition.

Book excerpt: Fowles asserts that the appeals of mass advertising reflect the motivational state of the targeted audience and that these motivational states anticipate socio-cultural change. Using advertising of 1950, 1960, and 1970, Fowles determined that the unsatisfied motives of Americans do vary over time. From this data, he constructs a forecast of our socio-cultural state in 1980 and predicts an increasingly isolationist U.S.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an important book not only because it describes archival and manuscript collections in 40 states, but because it is also the first of its kind devoted exclusively to journalism history. Entries are further subdivided by institution and special collection, and include address, hours, and services. This source also contains seven authoritative essays on historical writing, research, databases, bibliographies, oral history, etc. . . . Caswell has identified in painstaking detail a large number of collections and finally made them accessible to educators, historians, graduate students, and communications librarians. Highly recommended. Library Journal The history of journalism is generally regarded as one of the least developed and most widely overlooked areas of mass communications scholarship and teaching. This comprehensive volume, undertaken under the aegis of the American Journalism Historians Association (AJHA), was developed to meet the needs for definitive information and resources in this area. It is the only work available which focuses specifically on manuscript sources relating to journalism history. The guide includes essays by authorities in the areas of historiography, bibliographic sources, databases relating to journalism history, U.S. Newspaper Program, and oral history. Historical sources documenting the news function of print and electronic media in the U.S. are listed along with specific information about collections in archival and manuscript repositories in 40 states. An extensive name index to special collections enables the researcher to link related materials held by different institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference book is designed as a road map for researchers who need to find specific information about American mass communication as expeditiously as possible. Taking a topical approach, it integrates publications and organizations into subject-focused chapters for easy user reference. The editors define mass communication to include print journalism and electronic media and the processes by which they communicate messages to their audiences. Included are newspaper, magazine, radio, television, cable, and newer electronic media industries. Within that definition, this volume offers an indexed inventory of more than 1,400 resources on most aspects of American mass communication history, technology, economics, content, audience research, policy, and regulation. The material featured represents the carefully considered judgment of three experts -- two of them librarians -- plus four contributors from different industry venues. The primary focus is on the domestic American print and electronic media industries. Although there is no claim to a complete census of all materials on print journalism and electronic media -- what is available is now too vast for any single guide -- the most important and useful items are here. The emphasis is on material published since 1980, though useful older resources are included as well. Each chapter is designed to stand alone, providing the most important and useful resources of a primary nature -- organizations and documents as well as secondary books and reports. In addition, online resources and internet citations are included where possible.
