Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Astronomy, Vol. 1 The method, therefore, we propose to follow is neither strictly the analytic nor the synthetic, but rather such a combination of both, with a leaning to the latter, as may best suit with a didactic composition. Our object is not to convince or refute Opponents, nor to inquire, under the semblance of an assumed ignorance, for prin ciples of which we are all the time in full possession but simply to teach what we know. The moderate limit of a single volume, and the necessity of being on every point, within that limit, rather diffuse and copious in ex planation, as well as the eminently matured and asoer tained character of the science itself, render this course both practicable and eligible. Practicable, because there is now no danger of any revolution in astronomy, like those which are daily changing the features of the less advanced sciences, supervening, to destroy all our hypo-3 theses, and throw our statements into confusion. Eligible, because the space to be bestowed, either in combating refuted systems, or in leading the reader forward by slow and measured steps from the known to the un known, maybe more advantageously devoted to such ex planatory illustrations as Will impress on him a familiar and, as it were, a practical sense of the sequence of phe momena, and the manner in which they are produced. \ve shall not, then. I'gjgci. The analytic course where it leads more easily and directly to our Obje0ts, or in any way fetter ourselves by a rigid adherence to method. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Astronomy In this work the Author has endeavoured to cover as wide a field as possible and it has necessarily been somewhat difficult to decide upon what to include and What to omit, especially when dealing with the most recent developments. It is hoped, however, that the book will serve to give the reader a sufficiently complete view of the present state of Astronomy. Mathematics has been almost entirely excluded in order that the volume may appeal to the amateur, no less than the student. Where possible mathematical methods of reasoning have been followed, which it is hoped will prove of value to students of elementary mathematical astronomy in clothing the symbols with more descriptive matter than is given in the text-books on Mathematical Astronomy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Astronomy: Designed as a Text-Book for the Use of Students in College The revision of Professor Olmstead's Astronomy made in 1861, owing to circumstances which I could not well control, was not so thorough as I desired. The present edition is more in accordance with the idea which was in my mind, but which was then only partially carried out. The changes now introduced are principally of the same nature as those made in the revision of the College Natural Philosophy. Some historical matter is omitted; a few alterations are made in the arrangement Of topics; the subject of nearly every paragraph is pre sented in an italic heading; and, throughout, I have aimed to state principles and describe phenomena with more conciseness, Where I thought I could do it with equal clearness. About one-half of the eu gravings are new. A part of these are for the illustration of points either not illustrated or not discussed before, and a part are substituted for those which were faulty. The true proportions of lines and angles can not, in general, be presented in astronomical diagrams and the pupil must depend mainly on his teacher for the help which he needs in this respect. In a very few cases, where it seemed practicable, a figure is added, simply for the purpose of exhibiting the true size of an angle, and the correct proportion of lines. A few pages at the end of the volume are occupied with tables, which may be found useful. I am much indebted to Professor Henry H. White, of the Kentucky University, who has very kindly aided me by numerous criticisms and suggestions, of which I have made free use in this revision. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Astronomy The rapid succession of discoveries by which astronomy has of late years been extended, has rendered elementary works in that science previously published to a certain extent obsolete, while the increasing taste for its cultivation and the multiplication of private observatories and amateur observers, have created a demand for treatises upon it which, without being less elementary in their style, shall comprise a greater amount of that vast mass of knowledge which has hitherto been shut up in the transactions of learned socie ties aud other forms of publication equally inaccessible to the student and aspirant. A large space has therefore been assigned to this science in the present series. The results of the researches of original inquirers and of the labour of observers have been carefully reviewed, and large selections made from them are now for the first time presented to the student in an elementary form. In cases where the subject required for its better elucidation graphic illustrations, and where such representations could be obtained from original and authentic sources, they have been unsparingly supplied. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Popular History of Astronomy: During the Nineteenth Century The progress of astronomy during the last hundred years has been rapid and extraordinary. In its distinctive features, moreover, the nature of that progress has been such as to lend itself with facility to untechnical treatment. To this circumstance the present volume owes its origin. It embodies an attempt to enable the ordinary reader to follow, with intelligent interest, the course of modern astronomical inquiries, and to realize (so far as it can at present be realized) the full effect of the comprehensive change in the whole aspect, purposes, and methods of celestial science introduced by the momentous discovery of spectrum analysis. Since Professor Grant's invaluable work on the History of Physical Astronomy was published, a third of a century has elapsed. During the interval a so-called new astronomy has grown up by the side of the old. One effect of its advent has been to render the science of the heavenly bodies more popular, both in its needs and in its nature, than formerly. More popular in its needs, since its progress now primarily depends upon the interest in, and consequent efforts towards its advancement of the general public; more popular in its nature, because the kind of knowledge it now chiefly tends to accumulate is more easily intelligible - less remote from ordinary experience - than that evolved by the aid of the calculus from materials collected by the use of the transit-instrument and chrono graph.
