Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heavens: An Illustrated Handbook of Popular Astronomy I AM among those who believe, that the natural and physical sciences possess in themselves attraction sufficient to render any ornament superfluous. This conviction has been my only guide in the conception and writing of this book, which is not, indeed, a scientific one, but a faithful picture of the phenomena offered by the Heavens to man's intelligent admiration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Descriptive Astronomy The present edition extends to 961 pages as against 856 in the case of the last edition, but these figures quite fail to convey an idea of the amount of the new matter now given, because large type has been in many places replaced by small type and blank backs of Plates occupied by type, so that the net increase in the contents of the volume is not less than 200 pages. I have to acknowledge a great amount of very useful advice and assistance from observers in all parts of the world, most of them total strangers to me, many of them being persons I had never heard of until the receipt of their letters. Indeed, the letters that I have received, especially from the United States of America, have been a very gratifying encouragement to me to persevere in improving this work in every possible way. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Observations in Astronomy: A Handbook for Schools and Colleges Real knowledge in science depends upon direct study of objects and phenomena. Astronomy is no exception. Literally to look up, to see with our own eyes and to find out by seeing, these things are the beginnings of astronomy. As a guide to first observations, this handbook has been written. With few exceptions, the mechanical appliances required can be made by a carpenter or by the students themselves. Simple tools are best at first. It needs but slight experience with protractors, plumb lines, gnomons, and sun-dials to realize how aptly they can be used in scientific training, and how much mean ing they put into different subjects. Not a little light will reach some of the dark places of geography and arithmetic, when teach ers are accustomed to make simple observations, and know how to interest boys and girls in finding the latitude of the school building with the window gnomon, and the error of the clock from the horizontal sun-dial. At present, we sometimes have so-called courses of nature study with the sun in heaven left out! A few topics of advanced character, dealing mainly with time and longitude, have been included in the final chapter; but, as a rule, simplicity of treatment has been carefully guarded, and mathematical knowledge beyond elementary branches is not required. No effort has been made to deal even in a cursory manner with descriptive astronomy. It must, of course, receive its due meed of attention, and when the sky is cloudy, or the weather very cold, emphasis is naturally placed on that part of the subject. To add vividness to the illustrations, many observations have been prepared, under the writer's direction, in different parts of the country, by different students, and are marked with their initials. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the Depths of Space: A Primer of Astronomy The object of this little book is to give in simple language a comprehensive idea of the Universe. It is intended to supply a felt want, and does not aspire to be an exhaustive text-book of the science of astronomy; neither does it aspire to deal with the mathematical and instrumental sides of the science. The use of technical phrases has been as far as possible avoided, so that the beginner may have no difficulty in thoroughly mastering the book and in proceeding to the more advanced works on the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Astronomy It would, indeed, be a pleasure to entertain the hope that these pages might, among new recruits, arouse an interest in the greatest of all the sciences, or that those who have handled the theoretical or practical side might be led by them to read in the original some of the classics of astronomy. Many students have much compassion for the schoolboy of to-day, who is not allowed the luxury of learning the art of reasoning from him who still remains pre-eminently its greatest exponent, Euclid. These students pity also the man of to-morrow, who is not to be allowed to read, in the original Latin of the brilliant Kepler, how he was able - by observations taken from a moving platform, the earth, of the directions of a moving object, Mars - to deduce the exact shape of the path of each of these planets, and their actual positions on these paths at any time. Kepler's masterpiece is one of the most interesting books that was ever written, combining wit, imagination, ingenuity, and certainty. Lastly, it must be noted that, as a History of England cannot deal with the present Parliament, so also the un finished researches and untested hypotheses of many well known astronomers of to-day cannot be included among the records of the History of Astronomy. The writer regrets the necessity that thus arises of leaving without mention the names of many who are now making history in astronomical work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Astronomy Finally, the aim has been to give the student a well balanced conception of the astronomy of the present day. It is desired that it shall become an appreciable part of his mental picture of the general universe, which strongly colors all his Opinions even though he is not aware of the fact. When considered in relation to its influence upon the gen eral intellectual horizon, astronomy has claims which are second to those of no other science; and plain duty demands that in outlining courses of study these claims Shall not be ignored.
