Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the history of the Lindsey family over nearly three centuries from the 1700s to the late 1900s. David Lindsey has drawn on a wide range of source materials including the diary of his great-great-great grandfather Samuel Watson written in 1852, the diary of Samuel's grandaughter Sarah Lindsey written between 1874-1911 and that of her son Charlie. It is also informed by a large amount of personal research. The Lindseys established and grew a truss and surgical appliance business in London, Brighton, Portsmouth and across the South East of England. They were involved in the church and in politics, becoming members of prestigious societies and establishing the Royal Surgical Aid Society. Lindsey Street in EC1 in the City of London was named after Mark John Lindsey who died in 1906. Many other families' stories are woven through the book including family trees for the Brackett, Harman, Fenwick, Starling, Tressider and Watson families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written largely for the benefit of the writers children and grandchildren so they would know something of the life and hardships faced by their pioneering ancestors. It was inspired by their questions about our childhood and youth and their own memories of many visits to the Kansas farms of their grandparents and great grandparents. However, we think many other readers will enjoy learning something about what it was like growing up on a midwestern farm in the 1940s and 50s. A time that was in many ways much simpler but certainly not easy. We had the privilege of knowing personally grandparents and great grandparents who had lived through the many profound changes that occurred around the change of the century. Automobiles, tractors and telephones had only arrived on the farm about 30 years earlier and the grandparents’ barns and garages were still filled with horse-drawn equipment and harnesses from an earlier era. Electricity and graveled roads only occurred after WWII in our memory and running water and indoor bathrooms were still not common on many farms as late as 1955. It was a different and changing world of which we were privileged to be a part. Almost all our relatives lived nearby, and neighbors all knew us and didn’t hesitate to let our parents know if we were up to any mischief. We were expected to take responsibility, work hard, always be truthful, stay out of trouble, study hard and plant straight rows. All are excellent traits that unfortunately are not as valued today as they were then. In the book we have shared some history of the area and some stories of incidents from our lives that were not uncommon among farm families. We hope readers enjoy learning about us and our families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a government career that spanned nearly the whole of the Cold War, George R. Lindsey gained a reputation as a leading defence scientist and military strategist for Canada's Defence Research Board. His research and writing played a vital role in shaping Canadian policy in air defence, anti-submarine warfare, the militarization of space, and other areas of crucial concern in the nuclear age. The Selected Works of George R. Lindsey provides full access to a wealth of previously classified historical material regarding the scientific and technical aspects of Canadian defence and national security in the Cold War. Insightful and eye-opening, Lindsey's writings shed light not only on one of Canada's most influential civil servants of the Cold War era, but on the strategies, priorities, and inner workings of the Canadian defence establishment during an active and politically volatile period in world affairs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loyal to the Land is a sweeping history of one of the United States' largest working ranches, the Big Island of Hawaii's Parker Ranch. Dr. Bergin chronicles the ranch from its establishment on two acres purchased for ten dollars by John Palmer Parker to the years following World War II and the beginning of a new era of family ranch management under Parker’s grandson, Richard Smart. In this wide-ranging and insightful book, illustrated with more than 250 historical photos, Dr. Bergin first discusses the important Hispanic vaquero roots of ranching in Hawaii. He then relates the histories of the five foundation families, providing rich and detailed information on key members who contributed to the Ranch's success. The balance of the book examines every aspect of Parker Ranch development: management, labor, improvements and diversification of livestock, veterinary and animal care programs, and the Ranch’s role and influence on the Big Island and the state.
