Book Synopsis Japheth in the Tents of Shem by : Nicholas de Lange
Download or read book Japheth in the Tents of Shem written by Nicholas de Lange and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2016-01-07 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length treatment of the reception and transmission of Greek Bible translations by Jews in the Middle Ages. It is the fruit of some 40 years' research by Nicholas de Lange, who has collected most of the evidence himself, mainly from previously unpublished manuscript sources, such as Cairo Genizah fragments. Byzantine Judaism was esceptional in possessing an unbroken tradition of Biblical translation in its own language that can be traced back to antiquity. This work sheds light not only on Byzantine Jewish life and thought, but also on such subjects as the spread of Rabbinic Judaism in Europe, the Karaite movement, the ancient Greek translations, particularly Akylas/Aquila, as well as the relationship between Jewish and Christian transmission of the Greek Bible. An appendix traces the use of such translations down to the 19th century.

Book excerpt: Zutot: Perspectives on Jewish Culture aims to fill a gap that has become more and more conspicuous among the wealth of scholarly periodicals in the field of Jewish Studies. Whereas existing journals provide space to medium - and large sized articles, they neglect the small but poignant contributions, which may be as important as the extended, detailed study. The yearbook Zutot serves as a platform for small but incisive contributions, and provides them with a distinct context. The substance of these contributions is derived from larger perspectives and, though not always presented in an exhaustive way, will have an impact on contemporary discussions. Zutot covers Jewish Culture in its broadest sense, i.e. encompassing various academic disciplines - literature, languages and linguistics, philosophy, art, sociology, politics and history - and reflects binary oppositions such as religious and secular, high and low, written and oral, male and female culture.

Book Synopsis Why Medieval Hebrew Studies? by : Stefan C. Reif
Download or read book Why Medieval Hebrew Studies? written by Stefan C. Reif and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2001-09-06 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jewish Middle Ages were not, as was once supposed, full of 'doom, gloom and pedantry'. Medieval Hebrew manuscripts testify to stunning theology, super-rational exegesis, and interesting notions of language usage. There are unexpectedly 'modern' interpretations of the Hebrew Bible in Spain and France and exciting fragments from the Cairo Genizah, including a prayer to be recited by medieval pilgrims to Jerusalem. Among more prosaic Genizah items are a crusader note in Latin, a certificate about kosher cheeses, an appeal for financial assistance, and a doctor's faith in God over his own medicine. Stefan C. Reif shows that Medieval Hebrew culture is a vibrant and compelling field of study.
