Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MEDITATION FOR BEGINNERS IN SIX WORLD RELIGIONS is a step-by-step guide to meditation based on Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism, Kabbalah, Christian Mysticism, and Sufism. In Chapter I, I explain the nature of meditation and its various stages—physiological, psychological, and spiritual. Chapter II presents how to become free of negative conditioning, such as anxiety, stress, loneliness, depression; how to free positive qualities, such as love, compassion, generosity, trust; and how to expand moment to moment awareness. Chapter III discusses the process of formal meditation from the beginning all the way to enlightenment. In Chapter IV I set out Ground Rules for Formal Meditation. After discussing the Meaning of Yoga in Chapter IV, in the next chapter I present Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra and the meditation practices it prescribes. Next I consider the Meaning of Mantra and Transcendental Meditation, and then Bhakti Meditation and Jnana Yoga or Yoga of Knowledge. Next three chapters are devoted to Concentration and Insight Meditation to represent Theravada Buddhism; Zen Buddhism; and Tibetan Buddhism and their meditation practices. For Daoism, after discussing its nature, I present meditation exercises culled from various sources. Next, I go on to present Kabbalah and selective Kabbalist meditation practices. From Eastern Christianity, I include how to practice the “Jesus Prayer.” For Western Christianity, I include meditative exercises culled from classical and contemporary sources. For Sufism, I include descriptions of meditative methods derived from various sources. For those who would want to proceed to advanced practices, I include chapters for Choosing a Path; Finding a Qualified Teacher; and the ideal Teacher-Student Relationship as these will be crucial for them to arrive an experience of enlightenment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical and comparative study grounded in close readings of important works, this book explores the dynamics of the theory and practice of yoga in Hindu and Buddhist contexts. Author Stuart Ray Sarbacker explores the fascinating, contrasting perceptions that meditation leads to the attainment of divine, or numinous, power, and to complete escape from worldly existence, or cessation. Sarbacker demonstrates that these two dimensions of spiritual experience have affected the doctrine and cultural significance of yoga from its origins to its contemporary practice. He also integrates sociological and psychological perspectives on religious experience into a larger phenomenological model to address the multifaceted nature of religious experience. Speaking to a broad range of methodological and contextual issues, Samadhi provides numerous insights into the theory and practice of yoga that are relevant to both scholars of religious studies and practitioners of contemporary yoga and meditation traditions.

Do you want to enjoy the present better? These are things you can enjoy with the help of Zen, which refers to peace of mind and relaxation, in most cases. When you are at work, when you are trying to be more forgiving in an intense relationship, or when you are stressed out too much… Zen can be the principle of living that can pull you through. Book 2: Most people who practice Zen techniques, are calmer and more satisfied in their lives. It’s one of those things you have to experience to understand it. A pure Zen perspective on life can carry many benefits. It can help reduce stress and anxiety, alter the neurochemicals in your cerebrum, and make you feel more powerful and capable of things because of a more balanced outlook on the many challenges you face every day. Take the time to learn about the ancient art of Zen. You won’t regret it.

Book excerpt: Zen is another name for meditation. The word zen comes from the Sanskrit root dhyan – it has traveled far. Dhyan means a state of absolute silence, of thoughtless silence, but full of awareness. Even the thought that ”I am aware” is enough to distract you from your meditation. Even to know that ”I am in meditation” is enough to destroy it. A state of meditation is an innocent, silent state. You are blissfully unaware of your awareness. You are, but you are utterly relaxed. You are not in a state of sleep; you are fully alert, more alert than ever. You are alertness, rather.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zen master Julian Daizan Skinner guides the reader through a sequence of meditation techniques that can safely lead even a complete novice through to advanced levels. Based on his own long experience of the Rinzai Zen tradition, as taught by the great seventeenth-century masters, Hakuin and Bankei, Daizan highlights the key points for success and addresses the pitfalls. Structured around a traditional teaching framework called "The two wings of a bird," Daizan clearly lays-out how these methods build and combine to create a transformative and sustaining practice. The book contains an extremely useful section describing the experiences of western practitioners who have successfully applied this framework within the pressures of modern life. The final section features key source texts in translation, making the book a complete introduction and guide to Zen meditation. The work of a master, the book speaks at a deep level, with utmost simplicity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An effective new approach to Buddhist practice that combines the rigor of traditional meditation and study with the psychological support necessary for practice in modern life. Zen teacher Jules Shuzen Harris argues that contemporary American Buddhists face two primary challenges: (1) “spiritual bypassing,” which means avoiding or repressing psychological problems in favor of “pretend Enlightenment,” and (2) settling for secularized forms of Buddhism or mindfulness that have lost touch with the deeper philosophical and ethical underpinnings of the religion. Drawing on his decades of experience as a Zen practitioner, teacher, and psychotherapist, Harris writes that both of these challenges can be met through the combination of a committed meditation practice, a deep study of Buddhist psychological models, and tools from a psychotherapeutic method known as “Mind-Body Bridging.” Using this unique approach, students can do the real work of awakening without either denying their embodied emotional life or missing out on the rich array of insights offered by Buddhist psychology and the Zen practice tradition.

Several of them are central to the ceremonial not only of the Sōtō Zen Tradition but also of other Mahayana Buddhist traditions as well.
