Book excerpt: The water was icy cold and my feet were getting numb so I had to come out of the chilled water leaving my motorcycle stranded. She was still standing upright with the heavy loads without a stand The repetitive calling of the mighty Himalayas was irresistible to Mukul and he set out, away from his mundane living, answering the call, testing his own endurance in exchange of witnessing the un-paralleled beauty of the Greater Himalayan Ranges and high mountain passes of the world . Facing extreme cold and witnessing unfathomed snow desert, he rode on, fulfilling a dream. From hotel rooms to sleeping in tents amidst nowhere, he was driven to live a life only imagined. The journey only proved to be but a learning lesson giving new meaning to his being and his surroundings. Riding through the dangerous Zoji La and the battle fields of Kargil he plunged into the wilderness of Suru Valley, crossing the vast snow desert to the most interior part of Ladakh, Zanskar. Taking head on the mighty Khardung La, he then rode across the beautiful sand dunes of Hunder towards the last village of the country, Turtuk, on Indo-Pak border located very close to Karakoram Range. Meandering through the mighty Chang La and riding on the bank of mystically beautiful Pangong Tso towards Chushul on Indo-China border. He then continued to ride on the bank of Indus River through the painted mountains and high altitude desert to the highest Observatory of Hanley. He tracked his route witnessing the nomadic life of Karzok and magical lake, Tso Moriri and towards the high altitude wild life zone of Tso Kar. Continuing to ride through the famous Moore Plains and the deadliest Baralacha La to the heavenly beautiful Suraj Tal before tracing his route back to Delhi.

Book Synopsis Where Heaven and Mountains Meet by : Olivier Föllmi
Download or read book Where Heaven and Mountains Meet written by Olivier Föllmi and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep in the heart of the Himalayas, the ancient kingdom of Zanskar with its Tibetan Buddhist culture is isolated from the outside world by snow for nine months of the year. Olivier Föllmi has made numerous trips to Zanskar over the past twenty years. Journeying across the freezing terrain sometimes proved to be hazardous, even life-threatening; but his fascination for the region led him to return many times. The results of his travels are eloquently revealed in this book of breathtaking colour photographs. Zanskar’s extraordinary landscape, together with portraits of its people, provide a unique glimpse into an existence that is now changing as contact with the modern world increases. Complementing the photographs, delicate watercolours by Rapkar Wangchuk re-create the quintessential images of Tibetan Buddhism. A moving commentary tells the story of the author’s fascination with Zanskar and records the rites and customs of an exceptional society.

Book Synopsis The Unfought War of 1962 by : Raghav Sharan Sharma
Download or read book The Unfought War of 1962 written by Raghav Sharan Sharma and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s territorial disputes with India have been a matter of debate since 1950s. While China has amicably resolved boundary disputes with twelve out of its fourteen neighbouring countries, it is yet to resolve its boundary disputes with India and Bhutan as also its maritime disputes in the South China Sea and East China Sea. This volume looks at the complex dynamics of India–China boundary disputes which remains unresolved. It is still the biggest challenge to the relations between the two countries. From the Indian perspective securing Arunachal and the Indus Watershed is highly important. From the Chinese point of view Karakoram and Xinjiang–Tibet road must be respected. Secondary issues have always occupied a central and pivotal focus in the relations between India and China. This work also shows how British efforts to secure a defined and natural boundary began immediately after the creation of Jammu and Kashmir in 1846 after Amritsar treaty. In the eastern sector such an effort began only in the first decade of twentieth century. Relevant documents have been presented which examines the role of bureaucrats, diplomats, generals and surveyors. It examines the treaties, conventions, correspondence as well as internal debates between changing British officials and their conflicting British policies. Nehru refused Chou En Lai in 1960, which in turn led to the unilateralism in Chinese attitude after 1962. The volume breaks new ground by evaluating the differing policies, and explains how a secured boundary can ultimately be agreed upon. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka
