Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Antonio, City for a King takes us on an extraordinary adventure through an amazingly unknown, yet expectantly fitting, piece of Texas' origins. We learn how 16 families from Iberia's Canary Islands answered their monarch's call to populate a desolate northeast area of his New Spain for a strategic political reason. There was the year-long journey: crossing the Atlantic and then trekking north over present-day Mexico to Bejar. We see how these people initiated the township of San Fernando, guided its growth for generations and helped form many Texas traditions. And we follow their descendants through the town's evolution, through two rebellions, three changes of patriotism and one name change...to San Antonio.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The San Antonio Story a pictorial and entertaining commentary on the growth and development of San Antonio, Texas his is a story that will surprise you. Nationally acclaimed author T R. Fehrenbach has written an honest and open perspective of San Antonio de Padua, the first time such a history has been published. Not many American cities can claim the age, or the romantic heritage, of San Antonio. None can claim to be similar to this enigmatic and contemporary Texas city which historically has enjoyed notable progress in its own slow-paced manner. ” Within these pages is one of the most colorful and conquest filled histories any city has ever known, from the summer of 1691 when Spanish soldiers and priests found its environs “the most beautiful in New Spain". To the fitful beginnings of the early missions. . .to the devastation of plagues and the frustrations of conquering heroes. . .to the hard riding Comanches who terrorized San Antonio villagers from the high buffalo plains of West Texas. . .the beginnings were rugged and charged with destiny. You can gain a new perspective of the events which led to that historic last stand at the Alamo, an epochal place in the War of Independence with Mexico.. .how San Antonio made the Colt revolver famous. . .how Teddy Roosevelt bellied up to the Menger bar and recruited his Roughriders. _ .how the military came to town and stayed. . .how a river which was nearly paved over became a shining spot in San Antonio’s downtown. . .and how a city with passion and perseverance has developed into what O. Henry called one of America’s four unique cities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Sept. 27, 1865, the San Antonio Express-News made its debut. And from the beginning, there was plenty to write about. The Civil War had just concluded, and it was only twenty-nine years after the fall of the Alamo. The Chisholm Trail, the high road of the Cattle Kingdom, began in San Antonio, which was the largest and among the most diverse cities in Texas. Spanish, German, and English were commonly spoken. The politics were lively and sometimes divisive, as the city was full of Unionist sympathizers in a state that was an anchor of the Confederacy. Today, 150 years later, San Antonio is America’s fastest-growing big city and still making history. San Antonio is a richly illustrated compilation of more than 150 years of coverage on the history and culture of the city, as told in the pages of the San Antonio Express-News. From local politics to news stories on the military, energy, water use, the border and immigration that reverberate nationally and internationally, to the recent naming of San Antonio’s five Spanish missions as a World Heritage site, the city has always been a place where the American identity is forged. This book tracks the city's past from 1865 until 2015 and is full of evocative pictures and compelling accounts culled from the Express-News archives. The collection celebrates companies that shaped the city, such as Frost Bank, which began extending credit in 1867; the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, founders in 1869 of what is now the Christus Santa Rosa Health System and subsequently their namesake university; and H-E-B grocery. This is not a standard civic history or a straightforward march through the decades. Loosely organized by theme, the stories in the collection are often quite often surprising, just like San Antonio itself. As anyone who has spent time in the city knows, this is a place with a soul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transborder modernization of Mexico and the American Southwest during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries transformed the lives of ethnic Mexicans across the political divide. While industrialization, urbanization, technology, privatization, and wealth concentration benefitted some, many more experienced dislocation, exploitative work relations, and discrimination based on race, gender, and class. The Mexican Revolution brought these issues to the fore within Mexican society, igniting a diaspora to el norte. Within the United States, similar economic and social power dynamics plagued Tejanos and awaited the war refugees. Political activism spearheaded by individuals and organizations such as the Idars, Leonor Villegas' de Magnón's White Cross, the Magonista movement, the Munguias, Emma Tenayuca, and LULAC emerged in the borderlands to address the needs of ethnic Mexicans whose lives were shaped by racism, patriarchy, and poverty. As Gabriela Gonzalez shows in this book, economic modernization relied on social hierarchies that were used to justify economic inequities. Redeeming la raza was about saving ethnic Mexicans in Texas from a social hierarchy premised on false notions of white supremacy and Mexican inferiority. Activists used privileges of class, education, networks, and organizational skills to confront the many injustices that racism bred, but they used different strategies. Thus, the anarcho-syndicalist approach of Magónistas stands in contrast to the social and cultural redemption politics of the Idars who used the press to challenge a Jaime Crow world. Also, the family promoted the intellectual, material, and cultural uplift of la raza, working to combat negative stereotypes of ethnic Mexicans. Similar contrasts can be drawn between the labor activism of Emma Tenayuca and the Munguias, whose struggle for rights employed a politics of respectability that encouraged ethnic pride and unity. Finally, maternal feminist approaches and the politics of citizenship serve as reminders that gendered and nationalist rhetoric and practices foment hierarchies within civil and human rights organizations. Redeeming La Raza examines efforts of activists to create a dignified place for ethnic Mexicans in American society by challenging white supremacy and the segregated world it spawned.
