Book excerpt: This report presents the findings of the third 'Writing Themselves In' survey, which has been conducted every 6 years since 1998. This survey asks same-sex attracted and gender-questioning young people across Australia about their experiences and the issues they face. In 2010, 3,134 young people participated, aged between 14 and 21, from remote, rural, and urban areas. Survey topics include sexual attraction and sexual feelings, first realisation, sexual identity, sexual experience, sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy, verbal and physical abuse, links between abuse and negative health, drug use and self harm, feeing safe, schooling, internet use, disclosure and support, support as a buffer against homophobia, school policies and school culture, sexuality education and sources of information, sex education at school, and the influence of religion and rurality. Based on the findings, the report also presents recommendations for public education.
