Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers day-to-day naval actions during March-June 1943. The Allies attacked German U-boats day and night, forcing their withdrawal from the vital North Atlantic convoy routes, clearing the way for the eventual invasion of Europe from Britain. In the Bismarck Sea, Allied aircraft destroyed an entire Japanese troop convoy bound for New Guinea. In the Komandorski Islands, the U.S. Navy engaged a superior Japanese force and out fought them. After this loss, the Japanese commander was fired in disgrace. The Allies isolated the German and Italian troops fighting in Tunisia with an air and sea blockade. Without support from Italy, Tunisia fell. U.S. aircraft ambushed Japanese Admiral Yamamoto while he was en route to an inspection visit in the Solomon Islands. The U.S. 7th Infantry Division liberated Attu Island in the Aleutian Islands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within hours of the outbreak of the Second World War, Winston Churchill took up office as First Lord of the Admiralty. The same day the liner Athenia was torpedoed in the Atlantic in the first U-boat attack of the war. Churchill quickly recognized Britain’s survival depended on countering the U-boat threat and the strategic importance of protecting Allied merchant shipping with measures such as the convoy system. As this superbly researched book reveals, the Nazi U-boat fleet was relatively small and unprepared for war in 1939. But by early 1941 its numbers and effectiveness had increasing to the point that Hitler was able to declare ‘our warfare at sea is just beginning’. Prime Minister Churchill’s response was to issue his famous ‘Battle of the Atlantic’ Directive. Churchill’s Atlantic Convoys describes the political, strategic and tactical ebb and flow of events, particularly between 1942 and 1943. Thanks to increased numbers and scientific innovations the Allies slowly gained the upper hand despite a determined German fight back in late 1943 and early 1944. While the U-boat threat was never wholly defeated, the tenacity and sacrifices of the Allied naval forces won the day. Churchill later recognized the persistence of Germany’s effort and the fortitude of the U-boat service. It would not be until 7 June 1945 that Churchill and President Truman felt able to assert ‘the Allies have finished the job’.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 8 documents the swing of battle from the Axis to the Allies from December 1942 thru February 1943 as naval actions forced the Japanese to begin their retreat and their efforts to forestall the inevitable. Meanwhile, naval actions slowly strangled the Axis nations in Europe and led them to the road of defeat. Specific events include: * The last naval battles for Guadalcanal. * The IJN's secret evacuation of the Japanese Army from Guadalcanal. * The Russian encirclement and destruction of the German Sixth Army at Stalingrad. * The German counterattacks against the much larger Russian Army in the Ukraine. * The Battle of the North Atlantic between Allied convoy escorts and German U-boats. * The Allies' advance to trap German and Italian troops in Tunisia. * Intense actions in the Arctic Ocean as the German surface fleet tried to destroy the Arctic Convoys. * Increased attacks by USN submarines on Japanese shipping.

Book excerpt: In this comprehensive book, the wartime development of the U-Boat is traced along with the experiences of typical U-Boat crewmen, from recruitment to combat. Germany's World War II U-Boat fleet represented the elite of their naval personnel. In terms of technology, training, tactics and combat successes, the U-Boat Waffe was far superior to that of any other combatant nation. Gordon Williamson examines the operational tactics of the U-Boat fleet, as well as describing the massive bunkers that housed them. Wolf Pack contains material taken from Fortress 3: 'U-Boat Bases and Bunkers 1941-45', Warrior 36: 'Grey Wolf: U-Boat Crewman of World War II' and New Vanguards 51 and 55: 'Kriegsmarine U-Boat 1939-45 (1) and (2)', with the addition of a new section on wartime tactics.

Book excerpt: Reaction to the publication of the hardcover edition to this book in 1997 was immediate and overwhelming with demand quickly overtaking the limited stock available. Now a paperback edition has been printed that easily matches the high quality of the original but costs much less. Designed for visual impact, the volume provides a brutally realistic portrait of U-boat life during a critical phase of World War II in the Atlantic. It includes some two hundred and fifty illustrations, half in color and many with full-page spreads, of a fascinating combination of photographs, paintings, and drawings that brilliantly convey the U-boat experience -- and help explain the mystique of the German submariner that persists to this day.

Run by the Germany army, despite the Geneva Convention's decree that aircrew should be the responsibility of the Luftwaffe, their story has been neglected in the concentration on Stalag Luft III and VI in which aircrew officers were assembled from 1942 onwards. 4 maps. 32pp b/w photos. 296 pages.
