Book excerpt: Customary Law Ascertained Volume 3 is the third of a three-volume series in which traditional authorities in Namibia present the customary laws of their communities. It contains the laws of the Nama, Ovaherero, Ovambanderu, and San communities. Volume 2 contained the customary laws of the Bakgalagari, the Batswana ba Namibia and the Damara communities. Recognised traditional authorities in Namibia are expected to ascertain the customary law applicable in their respective communities after consultation with the members of that community, and to note the most important aspect of such law in written form. This series is the result of that process, It has been facilitated but the Human Rights and Documentation Centre of the University of Namibia, through the former Dean of the Law Faculty, Professor Manfred Hinz.
Book Synopsis Traditional Authority and Democracy in Southern Africa by : Franka Marina D'Engelbronner-Kolff
Download or read book Traditional Authority and Democracy in Southern Africa written by Franka Marina D'Engelbronner-Kolff and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Centre for Applied Social Sciences in Namibia held a major regional workshop to examine the role of traditional authorities in today's rapidly transforming societies of southern Africa. History has taught that customary laws and values that continue to be widely accepted do not disappear with the promulgation of new laws. Modern states of southern Africa adhere to democratic, constitutional and human rights principles which are seen as offering greater protection for the individual; but some people might feel that this is an imposition of alien concepts and values that threaten their survival and identity. Traditional leaders are still active, but how do their powers and duties relate to modern democratic constitutional processes? These are the issues examined in fifteen papers, as relating to Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finland's special characteristics as a Nordic, non-aligned welfare state gave it the resources and motivation to support liberation movements - in spite of restrictions arising from trade interests and a reluctance to jeopardise the country's neutral image. The study shows that, although it is not an easy task, in a democracy ordinary, dedicated people can, over time, influence political decision making at its most closed and guarded area, foreign politics.
Book Synopsis The Decline of Marriage in Namibia by : Julia Pauli
Download or read book The Decline of Marriage in Namibia written by Julia Pauli and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Southern Africa, marriage used to be widespread and common. However, over the past decades marriage rates have declined significantly. Julia Pauli explores the meaning of marriage when only few marry. Although marriage rates have dropped sharply, the value of weddings and marriages has not. To marry has become an indicator of upper-class status that less affluent people aspire to. Using the appropriation of marriage by a rural Namibian elite as a case study, the book tells the entwined stories of class formation and marriage decline in post-apartheid Namibia.
Book Synopsis Re-examining Liberation in Namibia by : Henning Melber
Download or read book Re-examining Liberation in Namibia written by Henning Melber and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2003 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1960, SWAPO of Nami-bia led the organised and later armed struggle for indepen-dence. In late 1989, the libera-tion movement was finally elected to power under United Nations supervision as the legitimate government. When the Republic of Namibia was proclaimed on 21 March 1990, the long and bitter struggle for sovereignty came to an end. This volume takes stock of emerging trends in the country's political culture since independence. The contributions, mainly by authors from Namibia and Southern Africa who supported the anti-colonial movements, critically explore the achieve-ments and shortcomings that have been part of liberation in Namibia. Henning Melber was Director of the Namibian Economic Policy Research Unit (NEPRU) in Windhoek between 1992 and 2000 and has been Research Director at The Nordic Africa Institute since then. He coordinates the research project on 'Liberation and Democracy in Southern Africa', of which this volume is part.
