Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Sea Wings, Ways, and Words: In the Days of Oak and Hemp It was in December, 1884, that I received the following kind words of encouragement from Mr. Ruskin, about some sketches and notes upon old ships, boats, sails, and rigging: - "My dear Leslie, I never saw anything half so delightful or useful as these compared sails so easily explained. Do set yourself at this with all your mind and time on this plan. It will be the most refreshing thing to me to take it up with you I could possibly have. Ever your grateful, J. Ruskin." Since then, I have been collecting material, and working in this same direction; and in 1887 I sent an illustrated article to Messrs. Harper Brothers, which appeared in the August number of their magazine for that year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cost of Wings and Other Stories Sheldrick, returning, refreshed and exhilarated, from a spin with a friend who had brought down a racing car of forty horse-power and an enthusiasm to match, found his wife sitting in the same chair, in the same attitude, as it seemed to him, in which he had left her, in the bare, dull sitting-room of their quarters at the Pavilion Hotel, on the edge of Grevmouth Links, from which starting point Sheldrick, in fulfillment of his recent engagement with the Aero Club of France, had arranged to take wing for Cherbourg, wind and weather permitting, on the morrow. It would be difficult exceedingly to imagine Caruso as an engineer or a bank manager, or in any capacity other than that of operatic star. It would be equally difficult to picture Shackleton as a side-splitting antic and quip-monger, or Pelissier in the role of the dauntless explorer. Sheldrick, the most recent idol of the flying world, was the type-ideal of the aviator. Mathematician, engineer, meteorologist, and athlete, his tall, lightly built but muscular frame carried the head of an eagle. The wide forehead, sloping to the temples, the piercing prominently set eyes, the salient nose, and the wide, firm, deep-cut mouth characterizing the longwinged birds of powerful flight, were Sheldrick's. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wings of the Dove Her father's life, her sister's, her own, that of her two lost brothers - the whole history of their house had the effect of some fine florid, voluminous phrase, say even a musical, that dropped first into words, into notes, with out sense, and then, hanging unfinished, into no words, no notes at all. Why should a set of people have been put in motion, on such a scale and with such an air of being equipped for a profitable journey, only to break down without an accident, to stretch themselves in the way side dust without a reason? The answer to these questions was not in Chirk Street, but the questions themselves bristled, there, and the girl's repeated pause before the mirror and the chimney-place might have represented her nearest approach to an escape from them. Was it not in fact the partial escape from this 'worst' in which she was steeped to be able to make herself out again as agreeable to see? She stared into the tarnished glass too hard indeed to be staring at her beauty alone. She readjusted the poise of her black, closely feathered hat; retouched, beneath it, the thick fall of her dusky hair; kept her eyes, aslant, no less on her beautiful averted than on her beautiful presented oval. She was dressed altogether in black, which gave an even tone, by contrast, to her clear face and made her hair more harmoniously dark. Outside, on the balcony, her eyes showed as blue within, at the mirror. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. [a] captivating and slyly subversive fictional paean to the real women whose work on the Oxford English Dictionary went largely unheralded.”—The New York Times Book Review “A marvelous fiction about the power of language to elevate or repress.”—Geraldine Brooks, New York Times bestselling author of People of the Book Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words that have been discarded or neglected by the dictionary men. As she grows up, Esme realizes that words and meanings relating to women’s and common folks’ experiences often go unrecorded. And so she begins in earnest to search out words for her own dictionary: the Dictionary of Lost Words. To do so she must leave the sheltered world of the university and venture out to meet the people whose words will fill those pages. Set during the height of the women’s suffrage movement and with the Great War looming, The Dictionary of Lost Words reveals a lost narrative, hidden between the lines of a history written by men. Inspired by actual events, author Pip Williams has delved into the archives of the Oxford English Dictionary to tell this highly original story. The Dictionary of Lost Words is a delightful, lyrical, and deeply thought-provoking celebration of words and the power of language to shape the world. WINNER OF THE AUSTRALIAN BOOK INDUSTRY AWARD

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Folded Wings: And Other Stories From High School Life They're clean, even if they are barefooted. Violet looked at the children for a moment, then issued her invitation, which was clamorously accepted. Jean, seized with a desire to make the outing a picnic, ran to the house to beg lunch from Nora, while Violet penciled a note to leave at Mrs. Baker's door, saying that she had borrowed the children and would take good care of them. Then the children were stowed away in the car, with Thomas in proud position by the driver. The littlest one, he explained is Pudgy. Sammy is Mary Martha's twin. The introductions thus completed, the party started. It was a wonderful ride. There is nothing like the first time in any experience, observed Barbara. I can't remember my first car ride, but I am enjoying all the sensations of one now, vicariously. The ride terminated in the edge of a wood, near which a broad stream flowed, and the party spent an hour or two exploring the region and enjoying the shade. I wonder if that old bridge was left for picturesque effect, observed Barbara. The road has been changed, and there's a warning up not to attempt to drive across it. Book excerpt: The power of prayer for spiritual renewal and personal transformation is at the core of all religious traditions. Because Hasidic literature contains no systematic manual of contemplative prayer, the texts included in this volume have been culled from many sources. From the teachings of the Hasidic Masters—the Ba'al Shem Tov, the Maggid Dov Baer of Meidzyrzec, and their immediate disciples—the editors have gleaned "hints as to the various rungs of inner prayer and how they are attained." Hasidism, the Jewish revivalist movement that began in the late eighteenth century, saw prayer as being at the heart of religious experience and was particularly concerned with the nature of a person’s relationship with God. The obstacles to prayer discussed by the Hasidic masters—distraction, loss of spirituality, and inconstancy of purpose—feel very close to concerns of our own age. Through advice, parables, and explanations, the Hasidic masters of the past speak to our own attempts to find meaning in prayer.
