The first slow, gradual, taming of the wilderness, of those vast, rolling hills, prairies, and wooded areas where unmanned tempests ride and reign, and again the advance from low log cabins, earthen shacks, and scattered scratch-farms to dwellings and farms of more pretension, and then the more rapid advancement to greater farms, comely villages, and ambitious cities, and so, on and on to greater and better things as the world advances, excite our liveliest imagination and challenge our admiration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wonderland, 1906 One of the interesting things, to me, in connection with Yellowstone Park, our great national park, is to read what foreigners write of it. We are, ourselves, so prone to think that almost everything worth seeing, in the line of natural wonders and scenery, is to be found everywhere except in our own land, that it is not only interesting but instructive to know what travelers from foreign lands think of the nature wonders we can show. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wonderland, 1904 The youthful Nimrod of a half century ago, whether he lived in Pennsylvania or Minnesota, has seen great changes in big and even in small-game hunting. To some extent this holds true of fishing. Ten years ago it looked as if the big game was doomed to rapid and complete extinction. But under the operation of wise game laws the game has, in recent years, actually increased, and in Minnesota, for example, the deer were, in the fall of 1903, more plentiful than for years. This too, despite the fact that in recent years the hunters have fairly swarmed in the woods of Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin during the open season. Even as I write. The daily press recounts one shipment of forty eight deer and a 1,2oo-pound moose from one Northern Minnesota town as received at the union station at St. Paul. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wonderland, 1901 The first authentic and definite information, in detail, relative to the Monad came from Rev. W. S. Holt, D. D., of Portland, Ore. Mr. Holt had been, for twelve years, a Presbyterian missionary in China, and was familiar with the symbol and its meaning there. As he was walking along the. Street he noticed the trade-mark painted upon the windows of the office of the company. It struck him as peculiar, and entering the office he made some inquiries, and then, in conversation with Mr. A. D. Charlton, Assistant General Passenger Agent, informed him of the general character and meaning of the design. Through Mr. Holt's efforts much additional information of value was secured, and now that a start was made in the right direc tion, investigation was also successfully pushed through other channels. At first sight the figure appears to be rather an involved one. An analysis of it soon corrects this impression. It is really quite simple. On the vertical diameter of a circle, inscribe on opposite sides of this diameter and one above and one below the center thereof, semi-circles having diameters of one-half the larger diameter, or the radius of the large circle, and the symbol is outlined. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dissemination of classical material to children has long been a major form of popularization with far-reaching effects, although until very recently it has received almost no attention within the growing field of classical reception studies. This volume explores the ways in which children encountered the world of ancient Greece and Rome in Britain and the United States over a century-long period beginning in the 1850s, as well as adults' literary responses to their own childhood encounters with antiquity. Rather than discussing the role of classics in education, it focuses on books read for enjoyment, and on two genres of children's literature in particular: the myth collection and the historical novel. The tradition of myths retold as children's stories is traced in the work of writers and illustrators from Nathaniel Hawthorne and Charles Kingsley to Roger Lancelyn Green and Ingri and Edgar Parin D'Aulaire, while the discussion of historical fiction focuses particularly on the roles of nationality and gender in the construction of an ancient world for modern children. The book concludes with an investigation of the connections between childhood and antiquity made by writers for adults, including James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and H.D. Recognition of the fundamental role in children's literature of adults' ideas about what children want or need is balanced throughout by attention to the ways in which child readers have made such works their own. The formative experiences of antiquity discussed throughout help to explain why despite growing uncertainty about the appeal of antiquity to modern children, the classical past remains perennially interesting and inspiring.
