Book excerpt: Alice's Wonderland dives down the rabbit hole and looks at the dazzling ways that Wonderland has been imagined by artists, filmmakers, writers, and more. Get a behind-the-scenes looks at how the books were created, meet Alice Liddell, the inspiration for the fictional Alice, and view the original manuscript copy of Alice in Wonderland, illustrated in Carroll's own hand. The fantastical world imagined by Charles Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll) - where a white rabbit carries a pocket watch, a crying baby morphs into a squealing pig, and a flamingo is used as a croquet mallet - has inspired countless artists to produce some of their best work. Illustrators such as John Tenniel, chose to tackle the work directly, producing illustrations, films, and shows that strive to accurately depict Wonderland. Others, such as artist Salvador Dali and director Tim Burton, freely adapted Dodgson's creation, using it as a springboard for their own incredible interpretations. Lushly illustrated paintings, artwork, and sketches, Alice's Wonderland explores how artists in different fields like art, music, theater, film, and more have interpreted Carroll's works through the ages. A must-have book for any Alice fan.

Lewis Carroll 1865. In 2015, the first edition of Alice in Wonderland will have its 150th anniversary. The novel as well as its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There have been read by people of all ages and all origins ever since. Due to the widespread success of the literary work, Lewis Carroll s novels have not only been illustrated by hundreds of artists, but also frequently adapted for film, theatre, opera, music, and other forms of art. Among these numerous adaptations are two motion pictures produced by the Walt Disney Company, which is known for warm-hearted movies for audiences of all ages. The relationship between Alice in Wonderland and Walt Disney even dates back to 1923 when he founded the famous film studio due to a distribution contract for his first completed short film called Alice s Wonderland. This thesis, however, focuses on the Disney adaptation from 1951 a 2-D cartoon animation as well as the most recent film adaptation from 2010 a combination of live-action film and computer-generated animation. Thus, the main part of this thesis constitutes a comparative analysis of both adaptations regarding the following aspects: the evolution of the visualisations, the different characters of the heroine Alice, the influences of Walt Disney and Tim Burton on the story lines and the styles of the adaptations, and the responses to both films. Thereby, the following research questions should be answered: What are the specificities of Carroll s novels? Why did it attract so many filmmakers? Why did both adaptations employ the medium of animation? Did the medium get implemented successfully? How did Walt Disney and Tim Burton affect the story lines and the styles of the adaptations? How did the heroine s character change under their influence? How did the audiences react to the adaptations? What are the reasons for that? The first theoretical part hence starts with a description of the literary model, which aims at defining the novels specificities respectively the essence Carroll tried to convey. Chapter 2 outlines the most important issues of today s adaptation discourse, since the theory of adaptation serves as the theoretical basis for the comparative analysis. In chapter 3, an overview of the medium of animation will be given, including the medium s possibilities and challenges as well as its techniques. With [...]

Carroll's unique blend of whimsy, absurdity, and clever wordplay have made it one of the most widely read and loved Lewis Carroll books. In this fantastical narrative, readers follow Alice, a young girl who falls down a rabbit hole into Wonderland, a realm of outlandish characters and nonsensical rules. The novel's vibrant and imaginative setting and characters have established it as a quintessential fantasy adventure story. Alice's encounters with the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, and other remarkable characters present a wide array of memorable episodes, all bound together by Alice's exploration of this strange world. As such, the novel stands as an enduring favorite among children's adventure tales. "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" also offers depth beyond its surface absurdity. Carroll's play with logic, language, and societal norms through the lens of Alice's experiences provides a sharp and humorous critique, a characteristic feature of Victorian social satire. In addition, the narrative stands as an interesting exploration of childhood and its fleeting nature, making it a thoughtful addition to coming-of-age stories. Alice's transformation from a naive child to a more self-assured individual capable of standing up to the Queen mirrors the trials and triumphs inherent in growing up. From the infamous 'drink me' potion to the final chaotic trial, Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" serves up a delightful and thought-provoking exploration of identity, curiosity, and the bounds of reality. The novel remains a cherished classic, fascinating readers with its fantastic landscapes, its eccentric characters, and its imaginative and witty narrative.

Book excerpt: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' is the best known work of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832 - 1898), better known by his pen name, 'Lewis Carroll'. Telling the tale of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by surreal and anthropomorphic creatures, the book was a huge commercial success on its initial publication in 1865. It was followed by its sequel, 'Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There', in 1871. The books play at the heart of logical problems and literary nonsense – giving the narrative lasting popularity with adults and children alike. This edition of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' is accompanied by the dazzling colour illustrations of A. E. Jackson (1873 - 1952). Jackson was an immensely talented illustrator who utilised a delicate, yet colourful technique. Muted blues, purples and pinks are most frequently found in his artwork – combined with a thorough appreciation of line and form. He also illustrated bestselling editions of Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels (1914), Charles Kingsley’s The Water Babies (1920), Tales from the Arabian Nights (1920), and Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (1921). Appearing alongside the text, Jackson's illustrations further refine and elucidate Lewis Carroll's captivating storytelling. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A delightfully twisted pair of tales published first in 1865 and 1872 respectively, these beloved children's stories were rife with political satire and social commentary of the day, even as they included friends of the author among the peculiar and anthropomorphic characters. Their nonsensical logic has influenced virtually every author of fantasy since, as well as inspiring countless worlds of wonder and the imagination. They remain as popular, and as profound today as when they first came into print; a feat remarkable in the fact that neither has ever not been available. This edition restores the original illustrations of Sir John Tenniel, a topical cartoonist whose classic caricatures gave us the most memorable depictions of Alice, and her adventures both in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. As life imitates art, these exploits came about as a way to entertain a very real little girl named Alice, whose alter ego was very bored, and let her young imagination carry her away...Alice in Wonderland - in which Alice follows a white rabbit in a waistcoat and hurriedly checking a pocket watch down what she believes to be the hole to his burrow. Instead, she falls slowly down a tunnel lined with curious objects, to land softly in a room with doors of different sizes. With the smallest of them behind a curtain before a table upon which sits a golden key and a potion labeled "Drink Me", she makes a fateful decision that leads her into a series of equally improbable and unforgettable situations...Through the Look Glass - in which Alice, now playing with the kitten of her cat in the first book, ponders the reflection in the wall mirror hung above the fireplace. Climbing up the mantle over the hearth, she leans against the glass and in a moment has passed through to its opposite side. Once there, she learns again just how contrary and unpredictable this other world beyond the one we know can be...
