Excerpt: ...to talk well upon religion, to quote Scripture, to have a text for every occasion, to read the religious miscellany, and the religious controversy of the day, and yet be very ill grounded in religious truth. It is very possible to obtain credit for much piety, and yet to do wrong on the very points on which our judgment is least mistrusted. And it is in this way that some, apparently conscientious persons, not unfrequently mistake. They have in religion, as in other subjects, just that ready knowledge which is always producible, and which leads them to imagine themselves proficient in theology, and to obtain credit for being so, when, in fact, they are mere babes in spiritual experience. It is a refreshment when we do meet with those, --and many such there doubtless are, --who are superior to all these faults. Such persons are not unconscious of their natural inferiority, nor of their individual defects, but they labor to improve the one and to correct the other. They have disciplined their minds in early youth, and they have gathered experience from the trials of life, and they afford a beautiful instance of steadiness and discretion. There have been examples of female excellence in every thing. We have heard of the heroine, and of the female martyr, of the woman of letters, and of the poetess. We are instructed by the recollection of Cornelia and Blandina, of the maids of Saragossa and of Orleans; and the legend of Sappho derives credit from our living reminiscences of Baillie, Hemans, and De Stael. But though these are instances of female superiority, greatness is not the characteristic of the sex. In circulating libraries and Sunday schools, deferential subjects developed an avid taste for reading; in coffeehouses, alehouses, and debating societies, they boldly dared to argue about politics. Such conservatives as Edmund Burke gaped with horror, fearing that what radicals applauded as the rise of rationality was really popular stupidity or worse. Subjects, insisted conservatives, ought to defer to tradition--and be comforted by illusions. Urging that abstract political theories are manifest in everyday life, Herzog unflinchingly explores the unsavory emotions that maintained and threatened social hierarchy. Conservatives dished out an unrelenting diet of contempt. But Herzog refuses to pretend that the day's radicals were saints. Radicals, he shows, invested in contempt as enthusiastically as did conservatives. Hairdressers became newly contemptible, even a cultural obsession. Women, workers, Jews, and blacks were all abused by their presumed superiors. Yet some of the lowly subjects Burke had the temerity to brand a swinish multitude fought back. Canonical Romantic poets as well as now-unknown youthful writers published as teenagers. These teenage writers reflected on their literary juvenilia by using the trope of prolepsis to assert their writing as a literary tradition. Precocious writing, child prodigies, and early genius had been topics of interest since the eighteenth century. Child authors—girl poets and boy poets, schoolboy writers and undergraduate writers, juvenile authors of all kinds—found new publication opportunities because of major shifts in the periodical press, publishing, and education. School magazines and popular juvenile magazines that awarded prizes to child writers all made youthful authorship more visible. Some historians estimate that minors (children and teens) comprised over half the population at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Modern interest in Romanticism, and the self-taught and women writers' traditions, has occluded the tradition of juvenile writers. This first full-length study to recover the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth-century juvenile tradition draws on the history of childhood and child studies, along with reception study and audience history. It considers the literary juvenilia of Thomas Chatterton, Henry Kirke White, Robert Southey, Leigh Hunt, Jane Austen, and Felicia Hemans (then Felicia Dorothea Browne)-along with the childhood writing of Byron, Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, and John Keats-and a score of other young poets- "infant bards "-no longer familiar today. Recovering juvenility recasts literary history. Adolescent writers, acting proleptically, ignored the assumptions of childhood development and the disparagement of supposedly immature writing.
