Book Synopsis Who Shall Lead Them? by : Larry A. Witham
Download or read book Who Shall Lead Them? written by Larry A. Witham and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The clergy today faces mounting challenges in an increasingly secular world, where declining prestige makes it more difficult to attract the best and the brightest young Americans to the ministry. As Christian churches dramatically adapt to modern changes, some are asking whether there is a clergy crisis as well. Whatever the future of the clergy, the fate of millions of churchgoers also will be at stake. In Who Shall Lead Them?, prizewinning journalist Larry Witham takes the pulse of both the Protestant and Catholic ministry in America and provides a mixed diagnosis of the calling's health. Drawing on dozens of interviews with clergy, seminarians and laity, and using newly available survey data including the 2000 Census, Witham reveals the trends in a variety of traditions. While evangelicals are finding innovative paths to ministry, the Catholic priesthood faces a severe shortage. In mainline Protestantism, ministry as a second career has become a prominent feature. Ordination ages in the Episcopal and United Methodist churches average in the 40s today. The quest by female clergy to lead from the pulpit, meanwhile, has hit a "stained glass ceiling" as churches still prefer a man as the principal minister. While deeply motivated by the mystery of their "call" to ministry, America's priests, pastors, and ministers are reassessing their roles in a world of new debates on leadership, morality, and the powers of the mass media. Who Shall Lead Them? offers a valuable snapshot of this contemporary clergy drama. It will be required reading for everyone concerned about the rapidly shifting ground of our churches and the health of religion in America.

Download or read book Saltwater Girl written by C. S. Hagen and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel by C.S. Hagen is both an unexpected love story in a time and place of great violence and prejudice and a stirring tale of a man running from his past who challenges the British opium monopoly in China known as the Combination. Saltwater Girl is set during the Boxer Rebellion (1900) - an anti-imperialist struggle waged by North China's commoners clinging to ancient mystic beliefs against a decadent Qing Dynasty and foreign aggression. Set in colorful strokes against a broad historical canvas including the Western nations vying for China's treasures, one man - James Innocent - disguised as a Lutheran reverend and AWOL from the US First Marine Corps, delves deeply into the opium trade in an attempt to destroy the Combination's powerful consortium. From inside the port city Tientsin (Tianjin) where foreigners and Celestials (locals) are divided into two parts, two wars emerge - the war against opium and the war against aggression. The Reverend not only finds his own life in danger, but struggles against falling for a Saltwater Girl - a river prostitute - who he believes may be his only friend. Filled with sensual imagery amidst breathtaking devastation and beauty, the Saltwater Girl is a rare look into colonial and Chinese history, the clash of cultures and the ravages the opium trade brought to the Asian masses.

With her psychic talents, matchmaker Sophie Reynard has helped plenty of highborn friends meet their perfect mate. But as the unrecognized daughter of an Earl, she sees no future in falling in love with an aristocrat. And yet, all the good sense in the world can't stop her from succumbing to one evening of anonymous passion when a dashing Marquis saves her from drowning in a Venice canal. Nicholas Tenbury, Marquess of Ancroft, knows nothing of Sophie's lineage. He knows only that the enchanting beauty captured his heart in one night and then fled, leaving no trace of her identity. But when he seeks answers from London's finest matchmaker, he finds none other than the woman herself—stubbornly refusing to acknowledge the attraction they share. Now the enamored Marquess has no choice but to sway Sophie with seduction.
Book Synopsis The Life and Music of Elizabeth Maconchy by : Erica Siegel
Download or read book The Life and Music of Elizabeth Maconchy written by Erica Siegel and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first full-length biographical study of Elizabeth Maconchy (1907-1994). The British-born Irish composer (Dame) Elizabeth Maconchy (1907-1994) is best known today for her cycle of thirteen string quartets, composed over five decades. And yet, her oeuvre ranges from large scale choral works, to ballets, operas, and symphonic scores. Having studied with Charles Wood and Ralph Vaughan Williams at the Royal College of Music, many of her compositions also garnered accolades from peers and established musical figures such as Gustav Holst, Donald Francis Tovey, and Henry Wood, among others. With access to a wealth of documentation previously unavailable, this book explores Maconchy's life and music within a greater consideration of the social and political context of the world in which she lived. While the influence of Bartók has been well documented, this book reveals the equally potent influence of Vaughan Williams on Maconchy's musical idiom. This book also discusses Maconchy's foray into administration and her advocacy of young composers through her work as the first woman to be elected Chairman of the Composers' Guild of Great Britain in 1959 and President of the Society for the Promotion of New Music following the death of Benjamin Britten in 1976. It will be required reading for those interested in the lives of women composers, twentieth-century British music, and musical modernism.

Download or read book Wolves of the Yukon written by Bob Hayes and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yukon wolf is the largest race of Canis lupus in the world. There are 5,000 wolves in the territory. Wolves live in all Yukon mountain ranges hunting Dall's sheep and caribou in the high alpine. In the forested valleys they hunt moose, the ideal prey size for packs to handle. Regional wolf numbers depend on the number of moose in the area. Packs are territorial except in the far north where wolves migrate long distances to follow the Porcupine caribou herd year-round. --From book cover.
