Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Dyaks of Borneo: A Tale of the Head Hunters T was a balmy autumn day four years after Queen Victoria I ascended the throne, and the neighbourhood of South ampton Water was looking perhaps more brilliant and more beautiful than it had during the long summer which had just passed. Already the leaves were covering the ground, and away across the water pine-trees stood up like sentinels amidst others which had already lost their covering. A dim blue haze in the distance denoted the presence of Southampton, then as now a thriving seaport town. Book excerpt: It was a balmy autumn day four years after Queen Victoria ascended the throne, and the neighbourhood of Southampton Water was looking perhaps more brilliant and more beautiful than it had during the long summer which had just passed. Already the leaves were covering the ground, and away across the water pine-trees stood up like sentinels amidst others which had already lost their covering. A dim blue haze in the distance denoted the presence of Southampton, then as now a thriving seaport town. Situated on a low eminence within some hundred yards of the sea, and commanding an extended view to either side and in front, was a tiny creeper-clad cottage with gabled roof and twisted chimneys. Behind the little residence there was a square patch of kitchen-garden, in which a grizzled, weather-beaten individual was toiling, whilst in front a long strip of turf, in which were many rose beds, extended as far as the wicket-gate which gave access to the main Portsmouth road.

Book excerpt: This book depict native artefacts, accommodation and clothing and has probably also contributed and fueled the popular image of Borneo as a place inhabited by wild headhunters and bare-breasted women. Provides the first historical account of Borneo and is still relevant over 100 years later. Includes 30 colour plates which gave a visual guide to the people, their attire, accommodation and way of life. In 1879, Carl Bock was commissioned by his Excellency Van Lansberge, the Governor-General of the Netherlands East Indies to travel through and report on the interior of South-East Borneo. In 1881, he published his somewhat sensational account of his observations on the route from Tangaroeng to Bandjermasin, a distance of over 700 miles. Highlights included his report on cannibalism among the dayaks as well as his prolonged efforts to locate a tribe of men with tails, of whom he had heard. Carl Alfred Bock (1849-1932)was born in Denmark to Nowegian parents. At the age of 19, he decided to pursue a career in natural history and went to London. In early August 1878, on his first collecting trip for the Zoological Society in London, he found himself on board a Dutch steamer bound from Batavia for Padang. While in Batavia, he was commissioned to explore the interior of southeastern Borneo and his findings were published in English as The Headhunters of Borneo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once headhunters under the rule of White Rajahs and briefly colonised before independence within Malaysia, the Iban Dayaks of Borneo are one of the world's most extraordinary indigenous tribes, possessing ancient traditions and a unique way of life. As a young man Erik Jensen settled in Sarawak where he lived with the Iban for seven years, learning their language and the varied rites and practices of their lives. He was also witness to the great and often shattering changes they faced then and continue to face today. The plentiful harvests, abundant game and rivers teeming with fish of their remembered past have long since disappeared - destroyed by restrictions on settlement and, ironically, by forest conservation. The Iban's animist beliefs are slowly being replaced by the imported religions of Christianity and Islam and their traditional ways by modern schooling and medicine. In this compelling and beautifully-wrought memoir, Erik Jensen reveals the challenges facing the Iban as they adapt to another century, whilst fighting to preserve their identity and singular place in the world. Haunting, yet hopeful, Where Hornbills Fly opens a window onto a vanishing world and paints a remarkable portrait of this fragile tribe, which continues to survive deep in the heart of Borneo.
