Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its sensational title, Carl Bock's account of his travels in the 1870s in both Borneo and Sumatra covers much more than the well-known head-hunting pursuits of the Dayaks. Bock vividly portrays scenes of contemporary life and society in an era of Dutch expansionism, as well as recounting his observations of the flora and fauna. Although many have travelled to the island and recorded their observations since the first publication of Bock's account, his book remains an original and unpretentious depiction of the region, further enhanced by a collection of vivid color illustrations.

Book excerpt: This book depict native artefacts, accommodation and clothing and has probably also contributed and fueled the popular image of Borneo as a place inhabited by wild headhunters and bare-breasted women. Provides the first historical account of Borneo and is still relevant over 100 years later. Includes 30 colour plates which gave a visual guide to the people, their attire, accommodation and way of life. In 1879, Carl Bock was commissioned by his Excellency Van Lansberge, the Governor-General of the Netherlands East Indies to travel through and report on the interior of South-East Borneo. In 1881, he published his somewhat sensational account of his observations on the route from Tangaroeng to Bandjermasin, a distance of over 700 miles. Highlights included his report on cannibalism among the dayaks as well as his prolonged efforts to locate a tribe of men with tails, of whom he had heard. Carl Alfred Bock (1849-1932)was born in Denmark to Nowegian parents. At the age of 19, he decided to pursue a career in natural history and went to London. In early August 1878, on his first collecting trip for the Zoological Society in London, he found himself on board a Dutch steamer bound from Batavia for Padang. While in Batavia, he was commissioned to explore the interior of southeastern Borneo and his findings were published in English as The Headhunters of Borneo.

Book excerpt: Once headhunters under the rule of White Rajahs and briefly colonised before independence within Malaysia, the Iban Dayaks of Borneo are one of the world's most extraordinary indigenous tribes, possessing ancient traditions and a unique way of life. As a young man Erik Jensen settled in Sarawak where he lived with the Iban for seven years, learning their language and the varied rites and practices of their lives. He was also witness to the great and often shattering changes they faced then and continue to face today. The plentiful harvests, abundant game and rivers teeming with fish of their remembered past have long since disappeared - destroyed by restrictions on settlement and, ironically, by forest conservation. The Iban's animist beliefs are slowly being replaced by the imported religions of Christianity and Islam and their traditional ways by modern schooling and medicine. In this compelling and beautifully-wrought memoir, Erik Jensen reveals the challenges facing the Iban as they adapt to another century, whilst fighting to preserve their identity and singular place in the world. Haunting, yet hopeful, Where Hornbills Fly opens a window onto a vanishing world and paints a remarkable portrait of this fragile tribe, which continues to survive deep in the heart of Borneo.

Ivor Evans served there as a company cadet and published his district officer's memoir in 1922. Reflecting his affectionate, if paternalistic, concern for the territory and its people, this account brims with information about Borneo's immediate past, much of which still remains in the Sabah of today.
