Book excerpt: "Brujas, Witches of Color are ancestral magical beings and the world we live in has tried to silence our voices. . . . This book is such a beautiful tribute to the different stories and experiences we go through as brujas. . . . Amplify the voice of Witches of Color by reading their stories." —Juliet Diaz, author of Witchery and Plant Witchery There is a new kind of witch emerging in our cultural consciousness: the bruja. Witchcraft has made a comeback in popular culture, especially among feminists. A growing subculture of BIPOC witches, led by Afro-Caribbean immigrants, Indigenous Americans, and other witches of color, is reclaiming their ancestral traditions and contributing their voices to the feminist witchcraft of today. Brujas chronicles the magical lives of these practitioners as they develop their healing arts, express their progressive politics, and extend their personal rituals into community activism. They are destigmatizing the "witch" of their ancestries and bringing persecuted traditions to the open to challenge cultural appropriation and spiritual consumerism. Part memoir, part ritual guide, Brujas empowers readers to decolonize their spiritual practices and connect with their own ancestors. Brujas reminds us that witchcraft is more than a trend—it's a movement.

There I was thinking saving Faerie had been challenging. Compared to what I'm up against now, fighting with the rebels to topple the Seelie regime seems like a walk in the park. Who would have thought that realm-wide strife and the threat of supernatural invasion could sound like the good old days? Everything can change in a day, as they say, and for me it sure as hell did. With my sister's life on the line for a magical crime she didn't commit, the clock is ticking loud and fast for me to save her. To clear her name, I need to unravel a mystery with so many knots that I'm not even sure where to start pulling. Do I choose the mysterious veil witch trying to kill us, the ruthless vampire seeking world domination, or the High Demon with the powers of a goddess? They're all involved somehow, and I'm willing to bet my old friend Vintain has a hand in this too. The problem being I don't have the first idea what their game is. Still, it appears that what happens in Faerie, doesn't stay in Faerie, or so I keep thinking. Then there's the cherry on top of this little nightmare sundae: to sort this mess out I'll have to partner up with a vampire. Just perfect, seeing as I'm magically predisposed to obliterate her and she has every reason to hate me. But I better make it work, because if I don't turn things around soon I may end up with a vampire for a sister.

The problem being, nowhere in those prophecies was it mentioned that I could pull it off twice. They say desperate times call for desperate measures, but I doubt they meant anything as risky as what I have planned. But things have gone from bad to worse to downright abysmal. Bethany and the other witches remain captured, and all signs point to them running out of time. Meanwhile, everyone's favorite High Mage is on the loose and working with his new High Demon sidekick. Their objective? That's the problem. I'm still not quite sure. Although, it's a safe bet that part of their plan involves subjugation of the human race. Since their trained pet, Silas, is the only teammate holding the keys to the veil, I figure I should target him first. The challenge there is that he's only been seen hanging out with a power hungry vampire. As you can see, it's a real poop storm. That's where my little plan comes in. Namely, hopping into a vampire body and infiltrating the vampire community to do a little recon. What could possibly go wrong? Well, it turns out I'm sort of the Typhoid Mary of supernatural bad news. Just when I thought things were bad in my realm, I find out they don't hold a candle to what's happening in Faerie. Yes, the demonic trio has been performing evil pet tricks there too. When facing a hydra, dealing with one head won't do the trick. You have to chop off all three. Which is exactly why armies are amassing in Faerie to march toward Vintain's new lair. Stop the presses, because it looks like Vintain now has an army of his own, comprised partly of fae creatures long thought to be extinct. An epic battle is in the making, to be fought with magic, for magic, on a magical battlefield. But at the end of the day, it may still come down to me. It's entirely possible that I may be the only one possessing the power to stop Vintain from taking back Faerie and handing the human realm over to the demons. In that case, if I go down, a whole lot of people go down with me. No pressure or anything.

Book excerpt: A sweeping historical saga that traces five generations of fiercely powerful mothers and daughters -- witches whose magical inheritance is both a dangerous threat and an extraordinary gift. Brittany, 1821. After Grand-Mere Ursule gives her life to save her family, their magic seems to die with her. Even so, the Orchires fight to keep the old ways alive, practicing half-remembered spells and arcane rites in hopes of a revival. And when their youngest daughter comes of age, magic flows anew. The lineage continues, though new generations struggle not only to master their power, but also to keep it hidden. But when World War II looms on the horizon, magic is needed more urgently than ever -- not for simple potions or visions, but to change the entire course of history. Praise for A Secret History of Witches: "I loved it. A beautiful generational tale, reminiscent of Practical Magic. . .. Grounded and real, painful and hopeful at the same time." —Laure Eve, author of The Graces "Historical fiction at its absolute finest....Deliciously absorbing." —Boston Globe "At once sprawling and intimate, A Secret History of Witches deftly captures the greatest magic of all: the love between mothers and daughters." —Jordanna Max Brodsky, author of The Wolf in the Whale For more from Louisa Morgan, check out: The Witch's Kind The Age of Witches

This volume delves into the stereotypical image of witches and their newts, caldrons, and headwear and investigates their historical origins. Historical fact and imaginative fiction are carefully sorted through, with reference to literature, films, and other forms of pop culture. Modern-day news stories and events remind readers that witches and witchcraft are by no means a thing of the past, though they are ripe for reappraisal.

Book excerpt: Witches, like the poor, are always with us. From ancient times to the present the aged, ugly crone has worked her evil magic and been burned at the stake by an outraged authority, or cured her neighbours and their animals with the help of gentle herbs and beneficent spells. Such, at any rate, is the popular picture. But not much of that picture is true. At the very least, it is misleading. Many witches were young; many witches were men; many witches came to court and were acquitted. There is no clear distinction between so-called white magic and black. Witches were not universally persecuted or tortured; it is not true that millions died; and the time they were most at risk covered less than a hundred years. So much more interesting than the cartoon stereotype, the real witch was a complex figure whose genuine story is only now starting to be unraveled, and this book offers the reader a fresh prospect of that intriguing narrative.
