Book excerpt: Son of the doomed Mary Queen of Scots, raised to rule two countries, James was one of the oddest kings ever to ascent any throne. Neither noble nor heroic, he confounded those who despised him by being shrewd enough to reign for fifty-eight years, survive countless plots and never go to war. 'A vastly entertaining addition to the historical novels of Scots author Nigel Tranter.' Glasgow Sunday Mail

Book excerpt: James VI and I, the first monarch to reign over Scotland, England and Ireland, has long endured a mixed reputation. To many, he is simply the homosexual King, the inveterate witch-roaster, the smelly sovereign who never washed, the colourless man behind the authorised Bible bearing his name, or the drooling fool whose speech could barely be understood. For too long, he has paled in comparison to his more celebrated Tudor and Stuart forebears. But who was he really? To what extent have myth, anecdote, and rumour obscured him? In this new and ground-breaking biography, James's story is laid bare and a welter of scurrilous, outrageous assumptions penned by his political opponents put to rest. What emerges is a portrait of Elizabeth I's successor as his contemporaries knew him: a gregarious, idealistic man obsessed with the idea of family, whose personal and political goals could never match up to reality. With reference to letters, libels and state papers, it casts fresh light on the personal, domestic, international and sexual politics of this misunderstood sovereign. 'A real page-turner for lovers of history' - Philippa Gregory

Book excerpt: Written in a spirit of activism, the street plays in this collection explore gay identity politics in language that is pure theatre. The monologues, spoken by a single character, Jay, at different points in his life, use homosexual sex as the backdrop, even as they make a satirical comment on bourgeois lifestyle, unemployment, male prostitution, the angst of the homosexual subject, religion, and right wing politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You want ninety? Fine, I'll give you ninety. I'll give them to you coming and going. Teen rocker Ritchie Sudden is pretty sure his life has just jumped the shark. Except he hates being called a teen, his band doesn't play rock, and "jumping the shark" is yet another dumb cliché. Part of Ritchie wants to drop everything and walk away. Especially the part that's serving ninety days in a juvenile detention center. Telling the story of the year leading up to his arrest, Ritchie grabs readers by the throat before (politely) inviting them along for the (max-speed) ride. A battle of the bands looms. Dad split about five minutes before Mom's girlfriend moved in. There's the matter of trying to score with the dangerously hot Ravenna Woods while avoiding the dangerously huge Spence Proffer--not to mention just trying to forget what his sister, Beth, said the week before she died. Acclaimed author Sean Beaudoin's latest offering is raw, razor-sharp, and genuinely hilarious.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During my life, seldom did I accept things at face value, so I was always trying to understand why myself and others did the things we did. For the happy and enjoyable days of my life, that were few and far between. I didn’t find the need to expand the search for what caused those events to transpire; on the days where I was challenged and found myself in over my head yet again, I dug deeper to help me find out why I acted poorly or why my choices were not the most popular ones in the history of the world. The early part of my life left quite a bit to be desired and along with a poor beginning came many poor choices that made me unpopular, but they did create excitement for the viewing audience. Struggling to fit in and being misunderstood are kind of my thing, and those decisions that made others view me as hostile and sometimes unwanted were captured in a series of private thoughts that were both put to paper and others that needed no documentation because they ran on a constant loop through my cavernous mind and gave me a constant reminder of how unpopular one man can become with hardly any effort. How complete my examination on my past is not for me to decide. I will leave that to the reader, but I can 100 percent guarantee that this information is factual and, at times, for me, more than a little heartbreaking. This is not an attempt for sympathy, that dream was crushed in my first few years of life, waiting for a kind word or a much-needed hug as a child were things I saw in movies but not in my home. I hope that I have made my vision of these times interesting enough so that you have enjoyed the experience of reading this book enough for it to be worthy of your time. Each of these ideas of mine are shared as quotes and explained in very plain terms, and on occasion, the pain of spending a lifetime of being judged harshly by those who have helped craft this person who has fallen from grace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you found yourself in circumstances you never envisioned, tangled up with people you never approved of, and doing things you never imagined? It seems impossible that the valedictorian of the entire human race would ruin his life by making dumb choices, but Solomon did. Solomon was better equipped to see through Satan’s deceptions than any man who has ever lived, other than Jesus. But in the end, he became just as blind to them as everyone else. Pay attention to the news and you’ll see that it’s not just the numbskulls that fall into Satan’s traps. It’s also the best and brightest of America’s fathers, husbands, and sons. Many smart guys who love God end up being ashamed and humiliated by Satan’s seductions. With humor, grace, and a pastor’s heart, Mark Atteberry seeks to offer practical suggestions on how to avoid a similar fate. His prayer for readers is to experience a wake-up call to move forward and determined on an upward path.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When King James VI of Scotland inherited the throne of England in 1603 he had ruled his native land almost as long as had Queen Elizabeth. He showed both vision and determination in pursuing his major political goals: a united Britain, and a foreign policy based on peace rather than bellicose chauvinism. Of course, there was a darker side: in the face of growing Parliamentary opposition, he would need all his celebrated wisdom to prevent open conflict. This book is a sympathetic portrait of a worthy first king of Great Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an edited volume of works that have predominated over the past several decades in contemporary pastoral theology. Through the writings of nineteen leading voices in the history of pastoral care, Dykstra shows how each contributor developed a metaphor for understanding pastoral care. Such metaphors include the solicitous shepherd, the wounded healer, the intimate stranger, the midwife, and other tangible images. Through these works, the reader gains a sense of the varied identities of pastoral care professionals, their struggles for recognition in this often controversial field, and insight into the history of the disciple. Includes readings by: Anton T. Boisen, Alastair V. Campbell, Donald Capps, James E. Dittes, Robert C. Dykstra, Heije Faber, Charles V. Gerkin, Brita L. Gill-Austern, Karen R. Hanson, Seward Hiltner, Margaret Zipse Kornfeld, Bonnie J. Miller-McLemore, Jeanne Stevenson Moessner, Henri J. M. Nouwen, Gaylord Noyce, Paul W. Pruyser, Edward P. Wimberly.
