Book Synopsis Theory of Wire Rope by : George A. Costello
Download or read book Theory of Wire Rope written by George A. Costello and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerable progress has been made in the development of models to predict the response of wire ropes and to determine the effects of variations in the design on its performance. The book begins with the equations of equilibrium for a thin curved wire in space, before going on to solve these equations, and apply them to determine the stresses in a simple strand. These results are then extended to ropes with more complex cross sections. Numerous examples are worked out to illustrate the theory and the test results discussed. This second edition includes new chapters on tension and compression of a cord, fatigue, and approximations. Intended for graduate students and practising engineers, this makes for a comprehensive theoretical review of the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding and slzmg cracks and other crack-like discontinuities has been the center of attention for scientists and engineers developing and using nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technology. However, with advanced mate rials being "engineered" and used in critical structural components, a new for NDE has emerged. Whereas many traditional engineering materi challenge als fail due to the initiation and self-similar propagation of a crack, reinforced composite materials degrade and fail in a manner more analogously to the collapse of a structure. Consequently the NDE of such materials involves assessing the combined effect of the material's damaged condition rather than identifying and sizing single critical imperfection. In 1979 Alex Vary, seeking to address the challenge confronting the NDE of advanced fiber reinforced composite materials began work on a new method of materials characterization. Focusing on the problem of evaluating graphite fiber reinforcedl epoxy laminated plates; Vary used a piezoelectric transducer to excite a mechanical disturbance in a plate and, with a sensi tive piezoelectric transducer monitored the disturbance on the same surface of the plate. (Placing the transducers on the same surface was primarily for practical purpose but their displacement in the direction of anticipated service load was of fundamental significance!) To quantify this observation, he counted the number of excursions, of the resulting electrical signal, above a arbitrary voltage threshold; a procedure frequently used for acoustic emission signal analysis.

Download or read book Wire Ropes written by Klaus Feyrer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main goal of this book is to present the methods used to calculate the most important parameters for ropes, and to explain how they are applied on the basis of numerous sample calculations. The book, based on the most important chapters of the German book DRAHTSEILE, has been updated to reflect the latest developments, with the new edition especially focusing on computational methods for wire ropes. Many new calculations and examples have also been added to facilitate the dimensioning and calculation of mechanical characteristics of wire ropes. This book offers a valuable resource for all those working with wire ropes, including construction engineers, operators and supervisors of machines and installations involving wire ropes.
