Book excerpt: Improved housing conditions can save lives, prevent disease, increase quality of life, reduce poverty, and help mitigate climate change. Housing is becoming increasingly important to health in light of urban growth, ageing populations and climate change. The WHO Housing and health guidelines bring together the most recent evidence to provide practical recommendations to reduce the health burden due to unsafe and substandard housing. Based on newly commissioned systematic reviews, the guidelines provide recommendations relevant to inadequate living space (crowding), low and high indoor temperatures, injury hazards in the home, and accessibility of housing for people with functional impairments. In addition, the guidelines identify and summarize existing WHO guidelines and recommendations related to housing, with respect to water quality, air quality, neighbourhood noise, asbestos, lead, tobacco smoke and radon. The guidelines take a comprehensive, intersectoral perspective on the issue of housing and health and highlight co-benefits of interventions addressing several risk factors at the same time. The WHO Housing and health guidelines aim at informing housing policies and regulations at the national, regional and local level and are further relevant in the daily activities of implementing actors who are directly involved in the construction, maintenance and demolition of housing in ways that influence human health and safety. The guidelines therefore emphasize the importance of collaboration between the health and other sectors and joint efforts across all government levels to promote healthy housing. The guidelines' implementation at country-level will in particular contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals on health (SDG 3) and sustainable cities (SDG 11). WHO will support Member States in adapting the guidelines to national contexts and priorities to ensure safe and healthy housing for all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the dawn of medical science, people have recognized connections between a change in the weather and the appearance of epidemic disease. With today's technology, some hope that it will be possible to build models for predicting the emergence and spread of many infectious diseases based on climate and weather forecasts. However, separating the effects of climate from other effects presents a tremendous scientific challenge. Can we use climate and weather forecasts to predict infectious disease outbreaks? Can the field of public health advance from "surveillance and response" to "prediction and prevention?" And perhaps the most important question of all: Can we predict how global warming will affect the emergence and transmission of infectious disease agents around the world? Under the Weather evaluates our current understanding of the linkages among climate, ecosystems, and infectious disease; it then goes a step further and outlines the research needed to improve our understanding of these linkages. The book also examines the potential for using climate forecasts and ecological observations to help predict infectious disease outbreaks, identifies the necessary components for an epidemic early warning system, and reviews lessons learned from the use of climate forecasts in other realms of human activity.

Book excerpt: "Over-the-Counter Medicines for Winter Illnesses" is a comprehensive guide that delves into the world of self-care and medication for a variety of ailments commonly encountered during the winter season. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to understand and manage the health challenges posed by the colder months. Winter brings a unique set of health issues, from the common cold and flu to more serious conditions like pneumonia and heart attacks. This guide covers a wide range of over-the-counter (OTC) treatments for these illnesses, offering practical advice on selecting and using medications effectively and safely. The book is structured to provide an in-depth look at each condition, exploring its nature, symptoms, and the best OTC remedies available. The initial chapters focus on familiar winter woes like the common cold, flu, and bronchitis, discussing the effectiveness of various OTC options for symptom relief, from nasal decongestants to cough suppressants. It also addresses less common but equally important issues like norovirus infection, strep throat, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD), guiding readers through the myriad of OTC supplements and remedies that can help alleviate symptoms. A particularly noteworthy aspect of this book is its emphasis on understanding the illnesses themselves. It helps readers differentiate between similar symptoms and choose the most appropriate treatment. For example, the chapters on bronchitis and pneumonia highlight the importance of recognizing the severity of symptoms and when to seek professional medical attention. The book also goes beyond physical illnesses. It addresses mental health challenges like SAD, offering insights into the impact of seasonal changes and how OTC supplements and lifestyle modifications can help manage these symptoms. Chapters dedicated to conditions like asthma, heart attacks, and skin issues like eczema and dry skin, often exacerbated by cold weather, provide a holistic view of winter health. They emphasize the importance of preventive measures and understanding the role of environmental factors in these conditions. Moreover, the book doesn't shy away from exploring alternative remedies. It dedicates entire chapters to herbal and natural solutions, providing evidence-based information on how these can complement traditional OTC treatments. In its final sections, the guide emphasizes empowerment and preparedness, encouraging readers to take control of their winter health. It provides resources for creating a personalized wellness plan and staying informed about winter health management. Written in simple, accessible language, "Over-the-Counter Medicines for Winter Illnesses" is a must-have for anyone looking to navigate the challenges of winter health with confidence and knowledge. It's not just a book; it's a resource for maintaining wellness during the toughest months of the year. Whether you're a parent managing a household, a senior seeking to stay healthy, or simply someone who wants to be prepared for the winter, this book offers the guidance you need.

Book excerpt: A blend of mindset science, original research, and cultural insights for cultivating a positive “wintertime mindset,” to vanquish winter blues and find joy and comfort in dark times year-round. Do you dread the end of Daylight Saving Time and grouch about the long, chilly season of gray skies and ice? Do you find yourself in a slump every January and February? What if there were a way to rethink this time of year? Psychologist and winter expert Kari Leibowitz’s galvanizing HOW TO WINTER uses mindset science to help readers embrace winter as a season to be enjoyed, not endured—and in turn, learn powerful lessons that can impact our mental wellbeing throughout the year. Kari Leibowitz moved above the Arctic Circle – where the sun doesn’t rise for two months each winter –expecting to research the season’s negative effects on mental health, only to find that inhabitants actually looked forward to it with delight and enthusiasm. Leibowitz has since travelled to places on earth with some of the coldest, darkest, longest and most intense winters, and discovered the power of “wintertime mindset”— viewing the season as full of opportunity and wonder. Impactful strategies for cultivating this wintertime mindset can teach us not just about braving the gray, cold months of the year, but also the darker and more difficult seasons of life. In Tromsø, Norway, people live in rhythm with nature, adapting to the months-long Polar Night by honoring seasonal fluctuations in energy, slowing down, and resting more. On the Isle of Lewis, off the coast of Scotland, communal gatherings around roaring fires embrace darkness and provide connection during long nights. In Yamagata, Japan, families sink into steaming onsen baths, banishing the chill of winter with healthful soaks that improve sleep and reduce risk of heart attack. Inspired by cutting-edge psychological and behavioral science research as well as cultures worldwide that find warmth and joy in winter’s extremes, HOW TO WINTER provides readers with concrete tools for making winter wonderful wherever they live and harnessing the power of small mindset changes with big impact to help readers embrace every season of life.
