Book excerpt: UWB (ultra-wideband) has been investigated for many decades but only recently has it become commercially viable. With the advent of WiMedia UWB technology and its associated standard specifications, the stage is set for the next generation of WPAN applications to take root. WiMedia UWB focuses on the ECMA-368 standard. Both PHY layer and MAC sublayers specified in this standard are explained in great detail. The book offers not only the facts about the requirements of the standard, but also the motivation and logic behind them. To give a comprehensive perspective of the UWB technology to the reader, other interrelated topics are also examined in this book. These include the history of UWB and its recent standardization attempts; UWB applications and advantages; UWB spectrum allocation and regulations around the world; UWB platform clients: Certified Wireless USB (CW-USB), Bluetooth, and WLP (WiMedia Link layer Protocol, which enables Internet Protocol over UWB); as well as some important implementation issues and considerations. As the first application of WiMedia UWB, CW-USB is given a special and more comprehensive treatment. This book is ideal for any engineer or engineering managers who are expecting to either develop a solution based on UWB or to integrate it with other devices. It will also be of interest to researchers who require an overview or an interpretation of the technology. One of the first books to describe the WiMedia standards (PHY and MAC) in detail A comprehensive approach to de-obfuscating the entire WiMedia UWB technology, from the PHY through the MAC, the MAC clients, the applications, and the regulations Includes a description of the CW-USB standard and its relation to WiMedia MAC Provides an up-to-date view of the UWB spectrum allocations and associated regulations around the world Derived from hands-on experiences in WiMedia UWB standards and system development efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobile and wireless communications are moving towards a new era that will be characterized by the seamless collaboration of heterogeneous systems, the need for high speed communications while on the move and for advanced services with quality guarantees. Recent market research studies show that most of the traffic in the future wireless networks will be produced by mobile multimedia services which are expected to proliferate by the year 2010. On the other hand mobile and wireless communications technology is becoming more and more important in developing countries where people demand fast deployment and low cost for broadband wireless internet services. The objective of this volume is to gather research and development on topics shaping the fourth generation (4G) in mobile and wireless communications and reveal the key trends and enabling technologies for 4G. We envisage 4G wireless communication systems as IP based solution providing integrated services (voice, data, multimedia) regardless of time and end-users? location. 4G technologies will manifest the benefits of the wireless and wired technologies convergence, through enabling a wide range of innovative (both indoor and outdoor) applications. 4G applications will feature premium quality, high security and an affordable cost. The vision, though fantastic, is associated with a host of technical and technological challenges.A great deal of the latter are discussed in the articles of this volume, which aims at providing insights on the research issues and solutions that are directly associated with leading edge 4G technologies and services.Taking into account recent developments in the world of wireless communications we have given emphasis to cover all these technologies and aspects that are considered as cornerstones for achieving the goals set for 4G and that will further boost research and development of next-generation mobile communications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positioning in Wireless Communications Systems explains the principal differences and similarities of wireless communications systems and navigation systems. It discusses scenarios which are critical for dedicated navigation systems such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) and which motivate the use of positioning based on terrestrial wireless communication systems. The book introduces approaches for determination of parameters which are dependent on the position of the mobile terminal and also discusses iterative algorithms to estimate and track the position of the mobile terminal. Models for radio propagation and user mobility are important for performance investigations and assessments using computer simulations. Thus, channel and mobility models are explored, especially focussing on critical navigation environments like urban or indoor scenarios. Positioning in Wireless Communications Systems examines advanced algorithms such as hybrid data fusion of satellite navigation and positioning with wireless communications and cooperative positioning among mobile terminals.. The performance of the discussed positioning techniques are explored on the basis of already existing and operable terrestrial wireless communication systems such as GSM, UMTS, or LTE and it is shown how positioning issues are fixed in respective standards. Written by industry experts working at the cutting edge of technological development, the authors are well placed to give an excellent view on this topic, enabling in-depth coverage of current developments. Key features • Unique in its approach to dealing with a heterogeneous system approach, different cell structures and signal proposals for future communications systems • Covers hybrid positioning investigating how GNSS and wireless communications positioning complement each other • Applications and exploitation of positioning information are discussed to show the benefits of including this information in several parts of a wireless communications system

ISA 2009 was the most comprehensive conference focused on the various aspects of advances in information security and assurance. The concept of security and assurance is emerging rapidly as an exciting new paradigm to provide reliable and safe life services. Our conference provides a chance for academic and industry professionals to discuss recent progress in the area of communication and networking including modeling, simulation and novel applications associated with the utilization and acceptance of computing devices and systems. ISA 2009 was a succ- sor of the First International Workshop on Information Assurance in Networks (IAN 2007, Jeju-island, Korea, December, 2007), and the Second International Conference on Information Security and Assurance (ISA 2008, Busan, Korea, April 2008). The goal of this conference is to bring together researchers from academia and industry as well as practitioners to share ideas, problems and solutions relating to the multifaceted aspects of information technology. ISA 2009 contained research papers submitted by researchers from all over the world. In order to guarantee high-quality proceedings, we put extensive effort into reviewing the papers. All submissions were peer reviewed by at least three Program Committee members as well as external reviewers. As the quality of the submissions was quite high, it was extremely difficult to select the papers for oral presentation and publication in the proceedings of the conference.

Book excerpt: This open access book was prepared as a Final Publication of the COST Action IC1406 “High-Performance Modelling and Simulation for Big Data Applications (cHiPSet)“ project. Long considered important pillars of the scientific method, Modelling and Simulation have evolved from traditional discrete numerical methods to complex data-intensive continuous analytical optimisations. Resolution, scale, and accuracy have become essential to predict and analyse natural and complex systems in science and engineering. When their level of abstraction raises to have a better discernment of the domain at hand, their representation gets increasingly demanding for computational and data resources. On the other hand, High Performance Computing typically entails the effective use of parallel and distributed processing units coupled with efficient storage, communication and visualisation systems to underpin complex data-intensive applications in distinct scientific and technical domains. It is then arguably required to have a seamless interaction of High Performance Computing with Modelling and Simulation in order to store, compute, analyse, and visualise large data sets in science and engineering. Funded by the European Commission, cHiPSet has provided a dynamic trans-European forum for their members and distinguished guests to openly discuss novel perspectives and topics of interests for these two communities. This cHiPSet compendium presents a set of selected case studies related to healthcare, biological data, computational advertising, multimedia, finance, bioinformatics, and telecommunications.
