Book excerpt: Wilson reminds us that Brown was not one case but fourincluding similar cases in South Carolina, Virginia and Delaware - and that it was only a quirk of fate that brought this young lawyer to center stage at the Supreme Court. But the Kansas case and his own role, he argues, were different from the others in significant ways. His recollections reveal why. Recalling many events known only to Brown insiders, Wilson re-creates the world of 1950s Kansas, places the case in the context of those times and politics, provides important new information about the states ambivalent defense, and then steps back to suggest some fundamental lessons about his experience, the evolution of race relations and the lawyer's role in the judicial resolution of social conflict.

Book excerpt: 'A compelling and courageous memoir forcing the legal profession to confront uncomfortable truths about race and class. Alexandra Wilson is a bold and vital voice. This is a book that urgently needs to be read by everyone inside, and outside, the justice system.' THE SECRET BARRISTER 'A riveting book in the best tradition of courtroom dramas but from the fresh perspective of a young female mixed-race barrister. That Alexandra is "often" mistaken for the defendant shows how important her presence at the bar really is.' MATT RUDD, THE SUNDAY TIMES MAGAZINEAlexandra Wilson was a teenager when her dear family friend Ayo was stabbed on his way home from football. Ayo's death changed Alexandra. She felt compelled to enter the legal profession in search of answers. As a junior criminal and family law barrister, Alexandra finds herself navigating a world and a set of rules designed by a privileged few. A world in which fellow barristers sigh with relief when a racist judge retires: 'I've got a black kid today and he would have had no hope'. In her debut book, In Black and White, Alexandra re-creates the tense courtroom scenes, the heart-breaking meetings with teenage clients, and the moments of frustration and triumph that make up a young barrister's life. Alexandra shows us how it feels to defend someone

Book excerpt: In his will, David Wilson left one third of the valuation of his slaves to his son Samuel Wilson, and a further third to the defendant Moses Wilson. The final third he placed in the hands of his executors for the support of my son Hugh L. Wilson, the plaintiff; he was to receive the interest annually, and after his death the principal was to be divided between Samuel and David Wilson's other children William and Polly. Moses was directed to take the slaves whose value was to support Hugh and to pay the sum to David's executors. Two executors were appointed, one of them Moses. After David's death the slaves were divided and two girls allotted to the maintenance of Hugh. The plaintiff's bill alleged that the other executor had renounced the office and so Moses now should hold the slaves in trust for the plaintiff, but that he had never paid any of the interest owing and, due to insolvency, had sold the slaves on for a nominal sum. The bill prayed for another trustee to be appointed and for Moses to be compelled to make an account of the slaves' profits. In his answer Moses stated that the two slaves allotted to Hugh's support (two girls of whom the eldest was five years old) were worth [dollars] 420 and one third of the all the slaves' value was only [dollars] 373.33. He insisted that he had only been responsible to Hugh for the interest on the latter sum and stated also that he had purchased Hugh's interest in this annuity in 1821 for [dollars] 107.50. The Supreme Court found that this purchase released Moses from the obligation to pay the annuity and dismissed the bill, though the plaintiff was not barred from bringing a new bill for the impeachment of the release if he so desired.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Book Award Finalist. How did humanity originate and why does a species like ours exist on this planet? Do we have a special place, even a destiny in the universe? Where are we going, and perhaps, the most difficult question of all, "Why?" In The Meaning of Human Existence, his most philosophical work to date, Pulitzer Prize–winning biologist Edward O. Wilson grapples with these and other existential questions, examining what makes human beings supremely different from all other species. Searching for meaning in what Nietzsche once called "the rainbow colors" around the outer edges of knowledge and imagination, Wilson takes his readers on a journey, in the process bridging science and philosophy to create a twenty-first-century treatise on human existence—from our earliest inception to a provocative look at what the future of mankind portends. Continuing his groundbreaking examination of our "Anthropocene Epoch," which he began with The Social Conquest of Earth, described by the New York Times as "a sweeping account of the human rise to domination of the biosphere," here Wilson posits that we, as a species, now know enough about the universe and ourselves that we can begin to approach questions about our place in the cosmos and the meaning of intelligent life in a systematic, indeed, in a testable way. Once criticized for a purely mechanistic view of human life and an overreliance on genetic predetermination, Wilson presents in The Meaning of Human Existence his most expansive and advanced theories on the sovereignty of human life, recognizing that, even though the human and the spider evolved similarly, the poet's sonnet is wholly different from the spider's web. Whether attempting to explicate "The Riddle of the Human Species," "Free Will," or "Religion"; warning of "The Collapse of Biodiversity"; or even creating a plausible "Portrait of E.T.," Wilson does indeed believe that humanity holds a special position in the known universe. The human epoch that began in biological evolution and passed into pre-, then recorded, history is now more than ever before in our hands. Yet alarmed that we are about to abandon natural selection by redesigning biology and human nature as we wish them, Wilson soberly concludes that advances in science and technology bring us our greatest moral dilemma since God stayed the hand of Abraham.
