Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length study of the life and writings of the Texas novelist, William Humphrey, who died August 21, 1997. Based on research in Humphrey's vast archives at the University of Texas, it provides the first full picture of his life and identifies many untraced sources of his work. The guiding principle is an exploration of Humphrey's satire on life-destroying myths: the myths of the hunter, the South, the cowboy hero, the Depression-era outlaw, and, supremely, the myth of Texas. To his dismay, Humphrey was often seen as a celebrator of these myths.

Between three and four feet long and weighing more than thirty pounds, it is a fish too big not to be fished for. It is also, therefore, a fish too big to be caught. Yet Humphrey resolves to do just that, and with a dry fly, no less. What follows is a season-long pursuit of the impossible as the amateur angler practices his technique, devises schemes for getting old One-eye to bite, and steels himself for the climactic showdown. Man and trout will find that they have much to learn from each other. One of the finest fishing stories ever published, My Moby Dick is a small masterpiece about a whale of a fish. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential anthology of early short fiction by an American master Set primarily in Texas and Oklahoma during the Great Depression, these extraordinary stories display the unique blend of irony, nostalgia, and sharp-edged lyricism that established William Humphrey as one of America’s finest chroniclers of small-town life. In “The Last Husband,” a bright-eyed newlywed bears witness to the cynical intrigues of an older married couple. “The Human Fly” is the darkly humorous story of a young man’s misguided attempt to create a new identity for himself in the rural Texas community where his name has become a running joke. “Quail for Mr. Forester” is the tender and precisely detailed portrait of a young Southern boy yearning for the glorious past he never knew. In “The Rainmaker,” a self-proclaimed professor of the elements is tarred, feathered, and run out of town for raising a dust storm instead of delivering the promised downpour. He escapes across the Red River and finally succeeds in bringing an end to the drought, only to be forced to flee yet again when a three-day deluge results in disastrous flooding. Marked by the same originality and artistry that distinguished Home from the Hill and The Ordways as two of the finest novels in American literature, The Collected Stories of William Humphrey is a testament to the breathtaking scope of its author’s vision and the graceful precision of his craft. This ebook features an illustrated biography of William Humphrey including rare photos form the author’s estate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A brilliantly inventive account of the evolution of consciousness, the best yet” (Paul Broks, Prospect). “Consciousness matters. Arguably it matters more than anything. The purpose of this book is to build towards an explanation of just what the matter is.” Nicholas Humphrey begins this compelling exploration of the biggest of big questions with a challenge to the reader, and himself. What’s involved in “seeing red”? What is it like for us to see someone else seeing something red? Seeing a red screen tells us a fact about something in the world. But it also creates a new fact—a sensation in each of our minds, the feeling of redness. And that’s the mystery. Conventional science so far hasn’t told us what conscious sensations are made of, or how we get access to them, or why we have them at all. From an evolutionary perspective, what’s the point of consciousness? Humphrey offers a daring and novel solution, arguing that sensations are not things that happen to us, they are things we do—originating in our primordial ancestors’ expressions of liking or disgust. Tracing the evolutionary trajectory through to human beings, he shows how this has led to sensations playing the key role in the human sense of Self. The Self, as we now know it from within, seems to have fascinating other-worldly properties. It leads us to believe in mind-body duality and the existence of a soul. And such beliefs—even if mistaken—can be highly adaptive, because they increase the value we place on our own and others’ lives. “Consciousness matters,” Humphrey concludes with striking paradox, “because it is its function to matter. It has been designed to create in human beings a Self whose life is worth pursuing.” Praise for Seeing Red “A wonderful amalgam of science, philosophy, and art. [Seeing Red] is based on deep knowledge of visual processing by the brain and poetic understanding of human experience. This is a remarkable achievement.” —Richard Gregory, Emeritus Professor of Neuropsychology, University of Bristol, and editor of The Oxford Companion to the Mind “A brief, brilliant, and wonderfully lucid contribution to consciousness studies. By combining empirical scientific method, evolutionary theory, and a sensitive appreciation of the arts, Nicholas Humphrey argues plausibly that the “hard problem” of consciousness—the difficulty of explaining the connection between the material brain and the phenomenon of individual selfhood—may itself be the answer to a bigger question: what makes us human?”—David Lodge, author of Consciousness and the Novel: Connected Essays “Illustrating his argument with the musings of poets and painters, Humphrey stylishly inspires curiosity about consciousness.” —Gilbert Taylor, Booklist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost two decades after his death Walton's reputation is higher than ever - many of his masterworks remain firm favourites in the concert repertoire, notably his eloquent concertos for violin, viola and cello, his dramatic cantata Belshazzar's Feast, his vivid film scores (such as Henry V), his powerful First Symphony (the creative outcome of a tempestuous love affair) and the sparkling entertainment Facade, a brilliant divertissement based on Edith Sitwell's poems and composed before hewas twenty. Born in the cotton town of Oldham, young Billie's life was transformed when he won a boy chorister's scholarship to Christ Church, Oxford. He soon lost his Lancashire accent but never his innate canniness. His remarkable creative gifts were spotted early both by Hubert Parry (of "Jerusalem" fame) and the intellectually adventurous circle surrounding the Sitwell family, who persuaded him, since he was determined not to return to the narrow confines of life in Oldham, that he should quit Oxford without a degree to live with them in Jazz-Age London and earn his living purely as a composer. He stuck to music but it made him only a pittance, however, and he became a self-acknowledged scrounger, lodging with the Sitwells for over ten years. His evident genius and his romantic good looks saw him taken up by rich admirers such as the poet Siegfried Sassoon and the rich industrialist Samuel Corutauld, to whose mistress, Christabel Aberconway, he dedicated his first orchestral masterpiece, the 1929 Viola Concerto. His idyllic relationship with a beautiful but impecunious German princess ended in an emotional turmoil that held up completion of his First Symphony for over a year. Walton then became the lover of a woman 22 years his senior, Alice, Viscountess Wimborne, a powerful society hostess who guided his career and chose the librettist, Christopher Hassall, for his first opera Troilus and Cressida. Within a year of her death in 1948 (when he was 46) hemet the vivacous 22 year old Susana Gil Passo and they married after a whirlwind courtship. On their honeymoon he announced that he did not want children and intended to live in Italy. They settled on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples, eventually acquiring a plot of rocky hillside land upon which they developed the villas and estate of La Mortella, now one of Italy's best-known gardens. A professional composer to his fingertips, always writing to commission, Walton's critical reputation sagged during his self-imposed Italian exile. But he demonstrated an uncanny flair for tapping a patriotic vein in such popular works as Crown Imperial, Orb and Sceptre and the Coronation Te Deum. A knighthood awarded in 1951 was followed by other honours, notably the Order of Merit. His final years were dogged by ill health - including a near fatal attack of lung cancer - and by a depressing sense of creative impotence; lack of inspiration forced him to abandon plans in his seventies to compose a Third Symphony. The authors Humphrey Burton and Maureen Murray worked with Walton on Ischia and have retained their Waltonian links since his death in 1983: she is curator of the Walton Archive and he is a member of the Walton Trust. With their shared background in television documentary they have adopted a filmic approach to this new pictorial biography. Each of its eight chapters opens with a succinct descriptive essay highlighting Walton's life and his significant musicalachievements: the narrative text is followed by many pages of illustrations, in which portraits by Cecil Beaton, Bill Brandt, Norman Parkinson and many others are interspersed with hitherto unpublished family photographs, music manuscript, press cuttings, playbills etc., all accompanied by commentary, reminiscences, anecdotes and liberal quotations from Walton's typically trenchant letters and self-deprecating interviews for radio and television. Much more than a coffee-table book, this centenary tribute conveys the essence of Walton's personality and provides a measure of his colossal artistic achievement. It will be essential reading for all lovers of his music and students of twentieth century musical life.

In the aftermath of his son’s suicide, Ben Curtis returns to the upstate New York fishing lodge that holds some of his happiest memories. It has been two years since his last visit, and Ben—thirty pounds lighter, his dark hair turned white—is barely recognizable to people who have fished alongside him for twenty summers. For the first time in all those years, he has made the trip alone. Over the course of the weekend, as Ben tramps through the forest and relearns the secrets of catching trout, he recalls the joys of the past and reckons with the grim reality of the present. Anthony, a Princeton freshman who inherited his father’s love of the outdoors, is gone. So too is the man he was named after: Tony Thayer, Ben’s best friend and former fishing companion. And Ben has no idea where his wife, Cathy, might be. In the wake of Anthony’s death, their already-strained marriage fell apart. Where does a man turn when everything he put his faith in—friends, family, love—is destroyed? In the exhilaration of fly casting into an icy mountain stream, Ben hopes to find the answer. Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as “a desperate, impressive, astonishing book,” Hostages to Fortune is a profound and deeply moving meditation on the art of survival. This ebook features an illustrated biography of William Humphrey including rare photos form the author’s estate.
