Book excerpt: In the recent years, the looming food scarcity problem has highlighted plant sciences as an emerging discipline committed to devise new strategies for enhanced crop productivity. The major factors causing food scarcity are biotic and abiotic stresses such as plant pathogens, salinity, drought, flooding, nutrient deficiency or toxicity which substantially limit crop productivity world-wide. In this scenario, strategies should be adopted to achieve maximum productivity and economic crop returns. In this book we have mainly focused on physiological, biochemical, molecular and genetic bases of crop development and related approaches that can be used for crop improvement under environmental adversaries. In addition, the adverse effects of different biotic (diseases, pathogens etc.) and abiotic (salinity, drought, high temperatures, metals etc) stresses on crop development and the potential strategies to enhance crop productivity under stressful environments are also discussed.

Book excerpt: ÒIÕm happy to have been a part of history, however small my role was.Ó The words of Wardiman Djojonegoro reveal Indonesian history the way only a man who worked alongside Ali Sadikin, B. J. Habibie and Soeharto can. The modest 85-year-old, a former education minister and current foundation chairman at the Habibie Center, recalls the younger days of a Òbig villageÓ Jakarta and says it was the countryÕs third president who taught him the keys to national development. This is what Peter Zack, a reporter for the Jakarta Globe, wrote on 18 April 2009. In the present English translation of his 2014 memoir, Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: Reminiscences of Working with Three Great Indonesians, 1966Ð1998, Wardiman invites us to take a walk down memory lane and in so doing he tells us something about his life and career, as well as sharing his thoughts on a lifetime of public service under three great Indonesians. He also tells us about his secrets of how to age gracefully and his thoughts on the future of Indonesian education. The bookÕs core theme can be summed up in his reply to a high school student who asked him about the key to his lifetime success: ÒWherever you are placed, do your best!Ó

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume asserts that international and intercultural experiences are powerful vehicles for first-year college students to learn the perspectives and skills necessary to function interdependently in a rapidly changing and complex world. This thesis is developed through an in-depth case study of efforts to provide such learning opportunities in a project called the First-Year Intercultural Experience at Hartwick College, a 4-year liberal arts and sciences institution in Oneonta, New York. The focus is on one of the courses, "Europe in Transition," which included an off-campus component in Germany and France. Fifteen first-year students participated. Findings from the case study show the usefulness of working with young undergraduates and the importance of student-centered approaches to learning and teaching. The chapters are: (1) "The Context of Undergraduate Intercultural Education in the 21st Century"; (2) "An Overview of Hartwick College"; (3) "An Administrator's Perspective: The Development of the First-Year Intercultural Experience" (David Bachner); (4) "An Economics Professor's Perspective: Educational and Personal Considerations" (Laurence Malone); (5) "A Foreign Language Professor's Perspective: Educational and Personal Considerations" (Mary Snider); (6) "Student Perspectives: Learning Interdependence in an International Setting"; (7) "Evaluations of the First-Year Intercultural Experience"; and (8) "Five Conclusions about Learning Interdependence through the First-Year Intercultural Experience." An appendix contains sample syllabi and course descriptions for some other intercultural learning experiences. (Contains 91 references.) (SLD)
