Book excerpt: In the context of climate change, world population growth and crashing ecological systems, wildfire is often a catastrophic and traumatic event. Its impact can include loss of life, life-changing injuries, long-term psychological stress; increases in domestic violence; destruction of properties, business and livestock; long-term housing insecurity; increased insurance premiums, fire-fighting, legal and health costs; as well as significant changes and species losses in the natural environment. In Australia, an average of 4,500 wildfires occur weekly. Yet how to prevent these wildfires, 85% of which are caused by human activities, has received extraordinarily little attention. The current approach to the prevention of arson can be summarised as small in scale, uncoordinated and rarely evaluated. ‘Feeling the heat: International perspectives on the prevention of wildfire ignition’ is the culmination of over a decade of research into wildfires and arson; taking an interdisciplinary approach to comprehensively understand the topic. This book reviews current international knowledge and presents new findings on political, spatial, psychological, socio-ecological and socio-economic risk factors. It argues that if we are to reverse the increasing occurrence and severity of wildfires, all prevention approaches must be utilised, broadening from heavy reliance on environmental modification. Such prevention measures range from the critical importance of reducing greenhouse gases to addressing the psychological and socio-economic drivers of arson. In particular, it calls for a coordinated and collaborative approach across sectors, including place-based, state and country coordination, as well as an international body. It will hold appeal for researchers and students from a range of disciplines and interests, government planners and policymakers, emergency services, counsellors and NGOs, and those in agriculture and forestry.

Book excerpt: The 2000 and 2002 fire seasons were, by most standards, among the worst in the past. Many argue that the threat of severe wildfires has grown, because of unnaturally high fuel loads (e.g., dense undergrowth undergrown and dead trees), raising concerns about damage to property and homes in the 'wildland-urban interface' (WUI) -- homes in or near forests. Debates about fire control and protection, including funding and fuel treatment (e.g., thinning and prescribed burning), have focused on national forests and other federal lands, but nonfederal lands are also at risk. This new book explores the latest issues dealing with wildfires, the consequences that they sow and what means are being used to prevent and protect the environment and the local populations. CONTENTS: Preface; Wildfire Protection: Legislation in the 107th Congress (Ross W. Gorte); Wildfire Protection in the 108th Congress (Ross W. Gorte); Timber Harvesting and Forest Fires (Ross W. Book excerpt: Controlling wildfires has been a significant mission for the state and federal governments since the early 1900s. During this time, the agencies responsible for wildland fire management have worked jointly in many ways to minimize losses from fires and to constantly improve firefighting and fire management techniques. In 1967, a new organization was established among the 20 states within the northeastern area of the United States to unite the forest fire control supervisors from each of those states. Since then, the Northeast Forest Fire Supervisors have been charged with the responsibility to stimulate and promote the development and use of specialized forest fire equipment, including better techniques in fire prevention, presuppression, suppression, and improved training and safety methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once a major wildfire is burning, it's too late for fire prevention and sometimes beyond the efforts of firefighters. That's why the most important person preventing a house from burning is the homeowner. If you live in an area threatened by wildfires, here are the most important steps you can take to preserve your home. Install an automatic gas shut off valve. Ember-proof your home. Keep decks clear. Create and maintain a non-ignition zone adjacent to your house. Remove junipers from your property. Take advantage of the wet season for vegetation management. Provide both vertical and horizontal spacing between plants and trees. Your fire insurance will not replace the time, anguish, valued personal items, or loss of community that occurs when your house burns down. The Homeowner's Guide to Fire Prevention provides information that may save your home.
