Download or read book Wildfires written by Jeremy V. Linton and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2000 and 2002 fire seasons were, by most standards, among the worst in the past. Many argue that the threat of severe wildfires has grown, because of unnaturally high fuel loads (e.g., dense undergrowth undergrown and dead trees), raising concerns about damage to property and homes in the 'wildland-urban interface' (WUI) -- homes in or near forests. Debates about fire control and protection, including funding and fuel treatment (e.g., thinning and prescribed burning), have focused on national forests and other federal lands, but nonfederal lands are also at risk. This new book explores the latest issues dealing with wildfires, the consequences that they sow and what means are being used to prevent and protect the environment and the local populations. CONTENTS: Preface; Wildfire Protection: Legislation in the 107th Congress (Ross W. Gorte); Wildfire Protection in the 108th Congress (Ross W. Gorte); Timber Harvesting and Forest Fires (Ross W. Gorte); Forest Fire Protection (Ross W. Gorte); Forest Fires and Forest Health (Ross W. Gorte); Managing the Impact of Wildfires on Communities and the Environment (A Report to the President); Forest Fire/Wildfire Protection (Ross W. Gorte)

Book Synopsis Engineering Solutions for Wildfires by : Carol Hand
Download or read book Engineering Solutions for Wildfires written by Carol Hand and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2019-12-15 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wildfires are exploding as climate change results in hotter, drier weather and longer fire seasons. There is a growing need for creative engineering solutions to better fight these disasters. This revealing volume begins with an overview of the 2018 California fire season. Readers then investigate the causes and effects of wildfires and learn about the methods engineers use to predict including the reliance on computer fire models and satellites. They will learn about the solutions to prevent and prepare for, and fight wildfires. The narrative relates the specific ways individuals and communities can protect themselves, including the adoption of fire-adapted ecosystems.

Book Synopsis Implications of the California Wildfires for Health, Communities, and Preparedness by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Implications of the California Wildfires for Health, Communities, and Preparedness written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California and other wildfire-prone western states have experienced a substantial increase in the number and intensity of wildfires in recent years. Wildlands and climate experts expect these trends to continue and quite likely to worsen in coming years. Wildfires and other disasters can be particularly devastating for vulnerable communities. Members of these communities tend to experience worse health outcomes from disasters, have fewer resources for responding and rebuilding, and receive less assistance from state, local, and federal agencies. Because burning wood releases particulate matter and other toxicants, the health effects of wildfires extend well beyond burns. In addition, deposition of toxicants in soil and water can result in chronic as well as acute exposures. On June 4-5, 2019, four different entities within the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held a workshop titled Implications of the California Wildfires for Health, Communities, and Preparedness at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at the University of California, Davis. The workshop explored the population health, environmental health, emergency preparedness, and health equity consequences of increasingly strong and numerous wildfires, particularly in California. This publication is a summary of the presentations and discussion of the workshop.
