Book excerpt: Excerpt from Who's Who in Science International The third annual issue of this publication contains biographies and classified index of over 9,000 scientists. The international character of the book is shown by the fact that the British element constitutes less than a quarter of the whole. Additional information is also given in the sections on the worlds Universities and Societies. The aim of this work is to represent every science in every country, and we are entitled to say that no other publication, official or otherwise, attempts all these various sections even for any one country. The frontispiece, representing eminent scientists recently deceased, consists this year of portraits of Lord Avebury, Sir G. H. Darwin, A. M. Picard and Ferdinand Zirkel. Russell Wallaces regrettable death occurred while the book was in the press. With regard to language, everything except the names of Journals, and of Societies (in that section), has been translated into its English equivalent. The reader should bear in mind, therefore, that publications of scientists in foreign countries are not available in English unless a translation is specifically mentioned. A similar policy has prevailed with regard to indexing. No notice has been taken of signs such as the Slav C or S, in so far as alphabetical placing is concerned. They will be found amongst C, S, or whatever letter may be the nearest English equivalent. The only exceptions to this are the German umlaut and the Scandinavian A and 0, which correspond to e placed after the vowel. Scientists are requested to keep us informed of changes as soon as conveniently possible. The exigencies of the post, especially to far countries, make serious inroads on the time, necessarily short, accorded to us in compiling an up-to-date book of reference, and a few omissions or scanty references are inevitable.
