Book excerpt: Sing! has grown from Keith and Kristyn Getty’s passion for congregational singing; it’s been formed by their traveling and playing and listening and discussing and learning and teaching all over the world. And in writing it, they have five key aims: • to discover why we sing and the overwhelming joy and holy privilege that comes with singing • to consider how singing impacts our hearts and minds and all of our lives • to cultivate a culture of family singing in our daily home life • to equip our churches for wholeheartedly singing to the Lord and one another as an expression of unity • to inspire us to see congregational singing as a radical witness to the world They have also added a few “bonus tracks” at the end with some more practical suggestions for different groups who are more deeply involved with church singing. God intends for this compelling vision of His people singing—a people joyfully joining together in song with brothers and sisters around the world and around his heavenly throne—to include you. He wants you,he wants us, to sing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A true, no holds barred account of a family living with dementia, frustration, love and heartbreak and a welfare system that let them down.In a busy world it’s easy to miss the decline of cognitive function in an elderly person; easy to judge it as slight confusion; easier still to ignore it completely – until suddenly, without warning, it explodes into your life. For John Walsh’s family, that’s exactly what happened; his parents’ 60 years of togetherness were suddenly no more. Now they, as a family, were dependent on others; reliant on Britain’s welfare system. What happened next was shocking and devastating.Eighteen months of social services, doctors, hospitals, care homes and frustration. No chance of a happy ending; absolutely no light leading to the end of the tunnel. Just darkness and injustice.John was horrified by what happened to his parents, shocked by the lack of support for them, as he struggled to reconcile himself to a welfare system in which pensioners are forced to sell their homes to fund depressingly poor standards of care, whilst young men who’ve never worked a day in their lives, happily stand at the bar drinking their way through hundreds of pounds worth of benefits. There are almost a million people living with dementia in Britain today. That number will double within the next 20 years. Forty-two percent of the population are affected by the disease in one way or another, yet money allocated to its research accounts for just 2.5 percent of the funds available. What has gone so wrong? This is a dark story, told with the honesty of humour and the distress and turmoil of loss.

Book excerpt: Profound reflections on the cross that help you to meditate on and marvel at the sacrificial love of Jesus. This book can be used as a devotional, especially during Lent and Easter. These profound reflections on the cross from David Mathis, author of The Christmas We Didn’t Expect, will help you to meditate on and marvel at Jesus’ life, sacrificial death, and spectacular resurrection-enabling you to treasure anew who Jesus is and what he has done. Many of us are so familiar with the Easter story that it becomes easy to miss subtle details and difficult to really enjoy its meaning. This book will help you to pause and marvel at Jesus, whose now-glorified wounds are a sign of his unfailing love and the decisive victory that he has won: “He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5) This book can be used as a devotional. The chapters on Holy Week make it especially helpful during the Lent season and at Easter.

True worship is an activity rooted in the grace of the gospel that affects every area of our lives. Thoroughly based in Scripture and filled with practical guidance, this book connects Sunday worship to the rest of our lives—helping us live as true worshipers each and every day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newfoundlanders have long and lustily sung their folksongs, and the tradition remains strong today. Despite modern influences, the old songs persist, mixed with new songs that are composed to record the events of our time. This is the first major collection of Newfoundland folksongs compiled and edited by native Newfoundlanders. It concentrates on songs of local composition largely ignored by earlier collectors and presents a significant number of songs never before published. For most of the last decade Lehr and Best have been travelling around the island recording the voices and favourite songs of anyone, young and old, who would perform. Recordings took place in family kitchens, on stage heads, and in trap stores while the singer knitted twine or repaired lobster pots, aboard ships at anchor or en route to some small deserted harbour. Humming engines, blowing oilstoves, or clattering supper dishes provided accompaniment. The 120 songs collected here by Lehr and Best have been transcribed by Pamela Morgan and illustrated by Elly Cohen. Some recall the distant past of a long and rich seafaring tradition; others tell of such recent tragedies as the displacement of outport people and the sinking of the Ocean Ranger. The selection represents the state of the folk-song in Newfoundland today; in some part it documents what is lost and forgotten, but it also celebrates what has survived, and thrives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Christian musicians know of the obligation to make music as agents of God's grace. They make music graciously, whatever its kind or style, as ambassadors of Christ, showing love, humility, servanthood, meekness, victory, and good example . . . Music is freely made, by faith, as an act of worship, in direct response to the overflowing grace of God in Christ Jesus." Co-sponsored by the Christian College Coalition, this thought-provoking study of music-as-worship leads both students and experienced musicians to a better understanding of the connections between music making and Christian faith. "Christian music makers have to risk new ways of praising God. Their faith must convince them that however strange a new offering may be, it cannot out-reach, out-imagine, or overwhelm God. God remains God, ready to swoop down in the most wonderful way, amidst all of the flurry and mystery of newness and repetition, to touch souls and hearts, all because faith has been exercised and Christ's ways have been imitated. Meanwhile, a thousand tongues will never be enough." Best relates musical practice to a larger theology of creation and creativity, and explores new concepts of musical quality and excellence, musical unity, and the incorporation of music from other cultures into today's music.

Book excerpt: I'll Sing My Songs Again is the biography of Ronnie Besaw Fuller, who grew up in a tiny, poor American Indian community in Northeastern Wisconsin. He was sick for much of his youth, and the only real interest he had was playing the guitar and singing. Realizing the extraordinary talent that Ronnie had, his father took him to talent contests around the area. In 1953, at the age of seven, he performed on television, and that was before they even had one for their home. Ronnie performed with many bands around the Midwest and in 1969, while in Las Vegas, an important person heard two of his recordings. Ronnie signed a seven-year contract to perform on-stage as a musician. In 1976, Ronnie was diagnosed with Ankylasing Spondylitis. He returned to Wisconsin to deal with it. Doctors told him that he had about five years to live. He began treatment at a nearby clinic. For nearly ten years he was given an enormous amount of medications. The last several years the pill count got up to 80 pills per day. Then, after he crashed, they took him off of the medications without a detox program. In 1992, he filed a 50 million-dollar lawsuit for medical malpractice. The way the court case was handled is unprecedented and unbelievable for a court case that was handled in the United States of America. What happened to Ronnie Besaw Fuller should never happen to anyone else in this country During his 27 years of disability, Ronnie Fuller has recorded 35 songs and has written another 124 songs that are still to be recorded. His latest CD, "Message From America" is getting a lot of attention. Many people in the business believe Ronnie is one of the best songwriters of his time.

Book excerpt: “A claustrophobic suspense novel of immense propulsive power.”—Kim Stanley Robinson A Canticle for Leibowitz meets The Hunt for Red October in We Shall Sing a Song into the Deep, a lyrical and page-turning coming-of-age exploration of duty, belief, and the post-apocalypse from breakout newcomer Andrew Kelly Stewart. Remy is a Chorister, rescued from the surface world and raised to sing in a choir of young boys. Remy is part of a strange crew who control the Leviathan, an aging nuclear submarine, that bears a sacred mission: to trigger the Second Coming when the time is right. But Remy has a secret too—she’s the submarine’s only girl. Gifted with the missile’s launch key by the Leviathan’s dying caplain, she swears to keep it safe. Safety, however, is not the priority of the new caplain, who has his own ideas about the mission. When a surface-dweller is captured during a raid, Remy’s faith becomes completely overturned. Now, her last judgement may transform the fate of everything. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book excerpt: From her first breath of fresh air beyond the pit, it has never been enough for Beth Moore to be free. She is an author and Bible teacher who has opened the riches of Scripture to millions, has longed for you to be free as well--to know the Love and Presence that are better than life and the power of God's Word that defies all darkness. Beth's journey out of the pit has been heart-rending. But from this and the poetic expressions of Psalm 40 has come the reward: a new song for her soul, given by her Saviour and offered to you in Get Out of That Pit--friend to friend. This is Beth's most stirring message yet of the sheer hope, utter deliverance, and complete and glorious freedom of God. It is a story, a song--a salvation--that you can know too.
