Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) serves the Army Soldier by providing research tools and resources. The atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), an area which begins at the surface and extends vertically to 1-2 km above ground level, is one of the ARL research areas. The lowest 10% of the ABL (a.k.a., surface layer) is the primary work environment for an Army Soldier. Characterizing this atmospheric surface layer was the focus of five field studies conducted between fiscal years 2001 2005 at White Sands Missile Range, NM. This report summarizes the surface layer research beginning with the rural environment studies and progressing into the subsequent urban setting. Appendices provide outlines and templates for conducting field research based on these successful field research studies. While this report provides an overview of these scientific investigations, it also serves as foundational material for reports documenting the Surface Layer and Urban Study research results in greater detail.

Book excerpt: Urban atmospheric stability patterns impact military and civilian health, tools, operations, and planning. By identifying repeatable urban stability patterns, improvements to each of these impacted areas can be achieved. In this report, the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) Urban Study research project is reviewed with a focus on stability characterization; specifically, the stable urban environment. Results from the WSMR 2007 Urban Study stability assessment are described and contrasted with the previous two urban studies. Eight stable environment characteristics were gleaned from the inter-Study analyses. The stable conditions observed showed an extremely consistent temporal pattern. The spatial distribution proved inconsistent however, the seasonally similar field studies showed patterns worthy of special note. Examples of the seasonally-similar stable patterns are given. A short summary of stable environment characteristics observed thus far are tallied in the Summary and several recommendations for subsequent research conclude the technical report. Preliminary results from the ongoing higher time resolution analysis are documented in appendix A.

The White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) Urban Studies address two critical elements in diagnosing airborne hazard releases, namely, airflow (chemical distribution) and stability (chemical concentration). This document provides a qualitative assessment of seven airflow features targeted by the WSMR 2007 Urban Study (W07US). The W07US stability assessment is published separately. The features identified for verification and characterization include the Fetch Flow, Velocity Acceleration, Velocity Deficit, Cavity Flows, Canyon Flows, Leeside Corner Eddies, and Reattachment Zone. Feature definitions, frequency of occurrences/day, and field study statistics are presented. Case studies enrich the text with excellent examples of inter-feature attributes and the detailed temporal and spatial urban characteristics. Suggestions for future airflow analysis work are interwoven throughout the text. The conclusions and recommendations recap key findings and next step suggestions for the W07US airflow qualitative assessment.

After examining the dynamic and thermodynamic main datasets, we believe that the quality of data acquired has the potential to enrich many different types of urban research projects.

Without access to a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) wind tunnel facility, side-by-side relative calibration (against a NIST calibrated sensor) is an alternate method for calibrating meteorological sensors. For the White Sands Missile Range 2007 Urban Study (W07US), a Pre- and Post-W07US calibration was conducted on the 27 ultrasonic anemometers (sonics) slated for the W07US project. This technical report documents the W07US relative calibration design, calibration data processing method, implementation, results, and some of the lessons learned from the Pre- and Post-W07US calibration project.
