For the first time, Unkovski-Korica also outlines Tito's internal battle with the Workers' Councils - empowered union bodies which emerged with the 'withering away of the party' in the early 1950s.The Economic Struggle for Power in Tito's Yugoslavia draws out the impact of the period economically and politically, and its long-term effects. A comprehensive history based on new archival research, this book will appeal to scholars and students of European Studies, International Relations and Politics, as well as to historians of the Balkans.
Book Synopsis With Stalin Against Tito by : Ivo Banac
Download or read book With Stalin Against Tito written by Ivo Banac and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sifting through a huge fund of hitherto unexploited sources, Banac demonstrates that the so-called Cominformists, long considered an inconsequential fifth column, in fact represented as much as 20 percent of the party membership. He shows that this fifth column included a variety of oppositional groups within Yugoslav communism who wanted to exploit the crisis for their own purposes. Their aims often diverged, and only from the official Yugoslav perspective could they be said to have constituted a unified opposition. Banac reconstructs the history of the labyrinthine factional struggles that preceded and accompanied the 1948 split and demonstrates that, as always, the national question played the dominant role in Yugoslav politics. After identifying the members of the opposition and mapping its course, Banac recounts the harsh repression of the movement.
Book Synopsis Socialist Planning by : Michael Ellman
Download or read book Socialist Planning written by Michael Ellman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socialist planning played an enormous role in the economic and political history of the twentieth century. Beginning in the USSR it spread round the world. It influenced economic institutions and economic policy in countries as varied as Bulgaria, USA, China, Japan, India, Poland and France. How did it work? What were its weaknesses and strengths? What is its legacy for the twenty-first century? Now in its third edition, this textbook is fully updated to cover the findings of the period since the collapse of the USSR. It provides an overview of socialist planning, explains the underlying theory and its limitations, looks at its implementation in various sectors of the economy, and places developments in their historical context. A new chapter analyses how planning worked in the defence-industrial complex. This book is an ideal text for undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in comparative economic systems and twentieth-century economic history.
Book Synopsis Who Influenced Whom? by : Dale C. Tatum
Download or read book Who Influenced Whom? written by Dale C. Tatum and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2002 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urging the rejection of the realist paradigm of international relations that rested upon assumptions of balance of power concepts, the author examines eight case studies from the Cold War as a move towards setting international relations concepts with more "utility" in influencing other countries. Superpower relations with Syria, Turkey, Ethiopia, and Guinea are explored in terms of strategic relationship concepts. Taiwan and Cuba were chosen as cases in which superpowers established a relationship to a small country in order to protect it from an ideological rival. Finally, the cases of Yugoslavia and Uganda were selected as being examples where a superpower established a relationship with a country in order to gain at the expense of the other superpower. Book Synopsis Unilateral Denunciation of Treaty Because of Prior Violations of Obligations by Other Party by : Bhek Pati Sinha
Download or read book Unilateral Denunciation of Treaty Because of Prior Violations of Obligations by Other Party written by Bhek Pati Sinha and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world still divided into sovereign states and possessed of no institutions for comprehensive centralised regulation of transnational interests and activities, treaties are steadily increasing in number and importance as an imperfect but indispensable substitute for such regulation. Through multilateral conventions, the world community seeks to establish widely accepted standards of state conduct in the general interest; and many international agreements are concluded for the purpose of regulating the relations between two or more states by creating contractual bonds of reciprocal nature between them. Despite the non-existence of anything resembling a world govern ment with effective power to enforce international law, most treaties are observed with a high degree of regularity. States normally carry out their treaty commitments because it is in their interest to do so. A treaty is made because two or more states have a common or mutual interest in establishing a new relationship or modifying an existing one. The natural penalty for the violation of a treaty establishing or regulating a mutually desired relationship is the disruption or im pairment of the latter. When national policies change, clauses per mitting termination or withdrawal by a unilaterally given notice often serve as safety valves which prevent pressures for treaty violations from building up. But there remains a residue of situations in which a state fails to live up to its obligations under a treaty still in force.
