Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to explore the relationship between the cognitive notion of parthood and various grammatical devices expressing this concept in natural language. The monograph aims to investigate syntactic constructions and lexical categories, e.g., partitives, whole-adjectives, and multipliers, encoding different kinds of part-whole structures both in Slavic and non-Slavic languages. It is envisioned to inspire radical rethinking of the ontology of models accounting for nominal semantics. Specifically, it provides novel evidence for a mereotopological approach to meaning, i.e., a theory of wholes that captures not only parthood but also topological relations holding between parts. This evidence comes from the phenomenon of subatomic quantification, i.e., quantification over parts of referents of concrete count nouns.

Book excerpt: Charge Sensitivity Analysis (CSA) represents a linear response treatment of molecular systems, based upon the chemical potential and hardness/softness concepts established within density functional theory (DFT). Recently, it has been shown to provide an attractive framework leading to novel approaches to chemical reactivity of open systems. The monograph presents the conceptual and methodological basis of the CSA covering its DFT roots, alternative resolutions and representations, sensitivities of closed and open atomic and molecular systems, charge stability criteria and relaxational effects due to the system environment, and alternative collective modes of charge redistribution. The CSA interaction energy in donor-acceptor systems is investigated in the second-order approximation. In particular, the relaxational contributions to the chemical potential, hardness and softness quantities are examined and their physical implications are summarized. The charge sensitivity concepts for reactive systems include: one- and two-reactant reactivity criteria, mapping relations between equilibrium displacements in the electron population and nuclear position spaces, the intersecting state model of charge transfer processes, intermediate hardness decoupling modes and the minimum energy coordinates, all defined in the electron population space. The conceptual developments are illustrated using recent qualitative and quantitative results on selected molecules, catalytic clusters and chemisorption systems. The CSA description is shown to connect directly to intuitive concepts and rules of chemistry, e.g., those related to interactions between hard/soft acids and bases.

The first is the mathematical investigation of the dynamics of infinite systems of in teracting particles and the description of the time evolution of their states. The second is the rigorous derivation of kinetic equations starting from the results of the aforementioned investigation. As is well known, statistical mechanics started in the last century with some papers written by Maxwell and Boltzmann. Although some of their statements seemed statistically obvious, we must prove that they do not contradict what me chanics predicts. In some cases, in particular for equilibrium states, it turns out that mechanics easily provides the required justification. However things are not so easy, if we take a step forward and consider a gas is not in equilibrium, as is, e.g., the case for air around a flying vehicle. Questions of this kind have been asked since the dawn of the kinetic theory of gases, especially when certain results appeared to lead to paradoxical conclu sions. Today this matter is rather well understood and a rigorous kinetic theory is emerging. The importance of these developments stems not only from the need of providing a careful foundation of such a basic physical theory, but also to exhibit a prototype of a mathematical construct central to the theory of non-equilibrium phenomena of macroscopic size.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparisons and Contrasts collects eleven of Richard Kayne's recent articles in theoretical syntax, with an emphasis on comparative syntax, which uses syntactic differences among languages to probe the properties of the human language faculty. Kayne attaches particular importance to uncovering the primitives of syntax/semantics, demonstrating the existence of silent elements that are syntactically and semantically active, and showing their distribution and limitations. He attempts to derive the very existence of the noun-verb distinction-and to account for the sharp differences between nouns and verbs and for the lack of parallelism between them-from the antisymmetric character of syntax. The common theme is an exploration of how wide a range of questions the field of syntax can reasonably attempt to ask and then answer.Comparisons and Contrasts will appeal to scholars and graduate students interested in syntax, semantics, and their effects on other areas of linguistics.
