Book excerpt: This dissertation offers a theory of a solution to the problem of lost meaning in life due to regrettable, past events. Each of us wishes for a meaningful life, but each of us, too, is vulnerable to threats to the meaning in life. The dissertation argues that a phenomenon called redemption can restore lost meaningfulness, and increase the value of our lives, overall. The first step in the argument is to demonstrate the need for a new model of redemption. The next step is to argue that redemption is a matter of transforming the meaning of events in our lives from bad to good in a thick, eudaimonistic sense related to a person's well-being. Finally, I show that this transformation not only increases a person's well-being but, more importantly, changes the relationship a person has with his past; By satisfying conditions for meaningfulness—a special value a life can have, distinct from its moral goodness or happiness—redemption renders the past more meaningful that it would have otherwise been. Because of this, redemption can solve the problem articulated in the beginning of the dissertation—the problem of lost meaning in life due to bad, past events.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not an ordinary book . . . it exists through grace. By the time I found the metaphysical teaching called Science of Mind in 1989, the local church had grown from a few people in a living room to about 175. Still meeting in an array of hotel ballrooms and clubs, the principles for successful living shared every Sunday were already deeply held beliefs in my life, so it immediately felt like home. One weekend we invited the elders of the church over to discuss church history and what a rich history it was. An afternoon with Bill and Win Siefert, Bruce and Dorothy Johnson, Marilyn and Joe Vondracek, Bob and Dorothy Huntoon, Harry and Frances Bleile, and Rev. James and Rev. Andrea Golden was magical. How many ministers have taken their congregation skydiving? White water rafting? On wilderness treks? How many change lives through deep introspection at family retreats in rustic cabins deep in the woods? How many invite congregants and friends to pound thousands of nails for an old fashioned barn raising to build a sanctuary? Whether the name was the Science of Mind Center, Church of Religious Science, Spiritual Enrichment Center, or Center for Spiritual Living, over the years we all learned to jump into life in one new way or another. The list of events by year presented in the appendix creates a picture of a community that loves to laugh and play together, always mindful of doing their spiritual practices. What a life! What a community! What a history! Rev. Mary E. Mitchell

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In some respects, this second book of poetry is quite similar to the first. In other ways, it is quite different. This particular book of poetry encompasses a broader range of subjects that have not only influenced me but society as a whole. I welcome this revelation as the future of our society seems bleak without us coming together in one spirit and not divided along any lines that would cause inferiority or superiority between humanity in general. There is great hatred that has permeated our culture from its inception. It is my belief and hope that through love, we can come together to appreciate our differences and our similarities. I fervently believe that the path to perfect love is only obtained through the love of God. As a Christian, I have come to embrace my great weaknesses and the courage to commit my life to not judging others but loving them. This book of poetry attempts to convey this message by glorifying the Person of Jesus Christ through the humility of words. I'm forever indebted to God for my family, without whom, the inspiration for many poems would not have come about.

Book excerpt: When Kathy Vintson finds herself upside down with her underwear on full display to many members at her church one Sunday, she suddenly realizes just how chaotic the world can be. But as Kathy tries to figure out how to regain her dignity (and pull her dress down), she is reminded of the Crown Effect—that she is a daughter of the King, Whose unmerited favor is to love her, even when her granny panties are on full display. Using humor and humility as her guide, Kathy takes a deeper look into what it means to be truly loved by the King of kings and how to bask in His love and peace, even when the world feels like it is closing in.

It contains an Account of the life of the Rev.d John Flamsteed FRS., compiled from his own manuscripts, and other authentic documents by Francis Baily Esq. As Astronomer Royal, Flamsteed spent some forty years observing and making meticulous records for his star catalogue, which would eventually triple the number of entries in Tycho Brahe's sky atlas.
