Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would you do if you found a freshly deceased body in the middle of the woods during a routine community litter pick-up party? What about if your teacher crush-slash-field trip leader suddenly passed out at the wheel of a school bus while driving a herd of terribly unruly middle school students to an art museum for what should be a day of summer school enjoyment? Well, Emma Lenford knows exactly what to do in these dire situations. She has to do the good, righteous, moral thing… whatever that is. And, perhaps, if she does at least ten good, righteous, and moral things, then maybe her unlucky life will start to turn around. Because battling good against evil always works out in the favor of good, doesn’t it? Emma Lenford is truly the unluckiest 17 year old on the planet. She keeps her sense of humor, though, through this series of seriously ill-fated situations. Her life is basically a sit-com where one traumatic thing after another befalls her, and it's all out of her control. She's constantly kidnapped, held at gunpoint, and even arrested for things she honestly didn't even do. Follow Emma in the third book that shows us all that, well, it could always definitely get worse, and figure out the answer to the age-old question, “what would Emma Lenford do?”

Including Emma Lenford, who’s just lucky enough to vomit on international television, win a trip to Wisconsin’s worst-kept vacation hotspot, and even find out that she’s related to some very infamous faces. Despite her newfound “luck”, Emma struggles to find a way to gain control of her life. She’s fully convinced that she’s been somehow cursed, and she has to figure out how stop the tragedies that keep befalling her before they get a little too out of control. Although, once you’ve been trapped and tortured via the ultimate atomic wedgie in a goat barn decorated with severed human body parts, maybe things have already gotten too far out of your control. Emma Lenford is truly the unluckiest 17-year-old on the planet. Follow her as every supposedly lucky adventure turns south in the fourth book of the series that makes us all wonder, “what’s luck got to do with Emma Lenford?”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexa, how does one reverse a curse? Because Emma Lenford’s horrendously hapless luck has not improved since her last few brushes with the law enforcement of Wisconsin. Now, though, there’s an old guy in a hot tub and a possible pregnancy to deal with (though, please note, both are completely unrelated), among so many more misfortunes. This second book in the series that keeps on giving will have you saying, literally, "Uh, what the luck?" because Emma's circumstances are even crazier than they ever were before. I mean, you thought getting thrown up on in the trunk of a kidnapper's SUV was bad? Try getting thrown around by an actual tornado or, better yet, thrown into performing an actual exorcism on a child that's actually trying to kill you.

Becoming captured by a deeply demented elder alongside the one member of society that you probably despise the most? Yep, check. Emma Lenford's life hasn’t been this heart-stopping since she spotted Jon Bon Jovi’s tour bus at the local 7-Eleven. Written as a series of seriously ill-fated situations, What Now, Emma Lenford? is like a sit-com that takes the death-defying to the level of detrimentally hilarious… no television set required.

Book excerpt: Now a new motion picture starring Katherine Langford, Charlie Plummer, and Hayley Law! “Truly the smartest and funniest book about spontaneous combustion you will ever read.” –John Green, #1 bestselling author of The Fault in Our Stars Mara Carlyle’s senior year is going as normally as could be expected, until fellow senior Katelyn Ogden explodes during third period pre-calc. Katelyn is the first, but she won’t be the last teenager to blow up without warning or explanation. As the national eye turns to Mara’s suburban New Jersey hometown, the FBI rolls in and the search for a reason is on. Mara narrates the end of their world as she knows it while trying to make it to graduation in one piece. It’s an explosive year punctuated by romance, quarantine, lifelong friendship, hallucinogenic mushrooms, bloggers, ice cream trucks, and Bon Jovi. Aaron Starmer rewrites the rulebook with Spontaneous. But beneath the outrageous is a ridiculously funny, super honest, and truly moving exemplar of the absurd and raw truths of being a teenager in the 21st century . . . and the heartache of saying goodbye. “Wildly inventive.” –Entertainment Weekly “Must List” “A comically surreal novel that will blow your mind.” –People Magazine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Covid-19 pandemic has revealed how far we as a European society still are from the proclaimed Union of Equality. The book explores how the promise of equal treatment can become a reality and compliance with the EU acquis relating to equality and non-discrimination can be improved. It studies enforcement and promotion aspects of the two watershed directives of 2000, the Racial Equality Directive 2000/43/EC and the Employment Equality Directive 2000/78/EC, through the lens of reflexive governance. This governance approach is proposed as having great potential in enhancing the likelihood of sustainability (or continuation) of reforms in the current candidate countries and EU Member States through its emphasis on reflexive learning processes and the cooperation between EU institutions, national authorities, and civil society actors. In order to deploy this potential, there is, however, a need for more consistent and transparent monitoring, both with regard to candidate countries as well as old and new Member States, and a reconsideration of the understanding of monitoring as such. It should be seen as helping to deconstruct own preference-formations and as a possibility to learn from successes and failures in a cooperative and recursive process. To work on these lacunae and improve learning and monitoring processes, this book identifies indicators, that are deduced from the comparative review of the implementation practice of the member states. This book is thus a contribution to the existing literature in the fields of Europeanization, governance, and the right to equality and non-discrimination.

Book excerpt: Writings by American Indians from the early twentieth century or earlier are rare. Willie Ottogary's letters have the distinction of being firsthand reports of an Indian community's ongoing social life by a community member and leader. The Northwestern Shoshone residing at the Washakie colony in northern Utah descended from survivors of the Bear River Massacre. Most had converted to the Mormon Church and remained in northern Utah rather than moving to a federal Indian reservation. For over twenty years, local newspapers in Utah and southern Idaho regularly published letters from Ottogary reporting happenings-personal milestones and health crises, comings and goings, social events, economic conditions and activities, efforts at political redress-at Washakie and other Shoshone communities in the intermountain West. Matthew Kreitzer compiled and edited the letters of Ottogary and added historical commentary and appendices, biographical data on individuals Ottogary mentioned, and eighty-five rare historical photographs. Written in a vernacular English and printed unedited in the newspapers, the letters describe a society in cultural transition and present Ottogary's distinctively Shoshone point of view on anything affecting his people. Thus, they provide an unusual picture of Shoshone life through a critical period, a time when many Indian communities reached a historical nadir. While the letters unflinchingly report the many difficulties and challenges the Shoshone faced, they portray a vital and dynamic society, whose members led full lives and actively pursued their own interests. Ottogary lobbied constantly for Shoshone rights, forging alliances with Shoshone throughout the region, visiting Washington D.C., advocating legislation, and participating in Goshute-Western Shoshone draft resistance during World War I.

Book excerpt: The bestselling author of Anatomy of Misfit and The Fall of Butterflies, Andrea Portes, is back with another irresistible snarky heroine in Liberty. What is a hero? Paige Nolan knows. Edward Raynes, the young man who exposed America’s unconstitutional spying techniques, is a hero, even if half the dum-dums in the country think he’s a traitor. Or Paige's parents, journalists who were captured by terrorists while telling stories of the endangered and oppressed. They were heroes, too. Were. . . or are—no one has ever told Paige if they’re still alive, or dead. Not heroes? Anyone in the government who abandoned her parents, letting them rot somewhere halfway across the world. And certainly not Paige herself, who despite her fluency in five languages and mastery of several obscure martial arts (thanks, Mom!) could do nothing to save them. Couldn’t, that is, until she’s approached by Madden Carter, an undercover operative who gives her a mission—fly to Russia, find Raynes, and discover what other government secrets he’s stockpiled. In exchange, he’ll reopen the case on her missing parents. She’s given a code name and a cover as a foreign exchange student. Who is a hero? Not Paige Nolan, but maybe, just maybe, Liberty is.
