Book excerpt: Wetting Experiments contains experimental wetting studies related to biological problems, polymers, and catalysts. An understanding of wetting is important for numerous practical applications, such as preparing self-cleaning surfaces, manufacturing artificial blood vessels, and developing new lubricants and nonadhesive dishes. As part of Wetting: Theory and Experiments, Two-Volume Set, this volume provides new insights into wetting experiments and fills a need not addressed by other books. Biology-related studies are devoted to the problem synthetic materials selection for use in biological media. Polymers are examined to estimate various surface characteristics, such as the ability of polymeric solids to alter their surface structures between different environments to minimize their interfacial free energy. Aimed at engineers, physical scientists, and materials scientists, this volume addresses the key areas of wetting, providing insights valuable to the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetting: Theory and Experiments collates papers published by Professor Eli Ruckenstein and his coworkers on the theoretical and experimental investigation of wetting of solid surfaces. It contains six chapters, each of which is preceded by a short introduction. The papers are selected according to the specific features being considered and they are arranged in logical rather than chronological order. The book focuses on wetting on the nanoscale (nanodrops on solid surfaces, liquid in the nanoslit) considered on the basis of microscopic density functional theory and to dynamics of fluid on the solid surface considered on the basis of hydrodynamic equations. Along with this, experimental studies of wetting related to various applications are presented.

Written by two of the most knowledgeable experts in the field, the text covers both current as well as possible future applications, providing basic working principles of lab-on-a-chip devices and such optofluidic devices as adaptive lenses and optical switches. Furthermore, novel e-paper display technology, energy harvesting and supercapacitors as well as electrowetting in the nano-world are discussed. Finally, the book contains a series of exercises and questions for use in courses on microfluidics or electrowetting. With its all-encompassing scope, this book will equally serve the growing community of students and academic and industrial researchers as both an introduction and a standard reference.

Book excerpt: In 1992 Congress passed the Defense Manufacturing Engineering Education Act with the intent of encouraging academic institutions to increase their emphasis on manufacturing curricula. The need for this incentive to integrate the academic and industrial communities was clear: gaps in manufacturing science were inhibiting the evolution of new manufacturing technologies that are required for the U.S. to maintain a competitive posture in the world marketplace. The Army Research Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories sought to contribute to the congressional intent by initiating a new series of graduate level college textbooks. The goal was to focus next-generation scientists onto issues that were common to the needs of the commercial market, the affordability of DoD weapons systems, and the mobilization readiness of the U.S. Armed Forces. The textbook The Mechanics of Solder Wetting and Spreading was written in this spirit by nationally renowned scientists for academe and industry. Research ers using the book are encouraged to formulate programs that will establish scien tific correlations between manufacturing process controls and product reliability. Such correlations are essential to the building of a new electronics industry which is based upon the futuristic concepts of Virtual Factories, Prototyping, and Testing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revealing of the phenomenon of superhydrophobicity (the "lotus-effect") has stimulated an interest in wetting of real (rough and chemically heterogeneous) surfaces. In spite of the fact that wetting has been exposed to intensive research for more than 200 years, there still is a broad field open for theoretical and experimental research, including recently revealed superhydrophobic, superoleophobic and superhydrophilic surfaces, so-called liquid marbles, wetting transitions, etc. This book integrates all these aspects within a general framework of wetting of real surfaces, where physical and chemical heterogeneity is essential. Wetting of rough/heterogeneous surfaces is discussed through the use of the variational approach developed recently by the author. It allows natural and elegant grounding of main equations describing wetting of solid surfaces, i.e. Young, Wenzel and Cassie-Baxter equations. The problems of superhydrophobicity, wetting transitions and contact angle hysteresis are discussed in much detail, in view of novel models and new experimental data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, titled Proceedings of the International Materials Symposium on Ce ramic Microstructures: Control at the Atomic Level summarizes the progress that has been achieved during the past decade in understanding and controlling microstructures in ceram ics. A particular emphasis of the symposium, and therefore of this volume, is advances in the characterization, understanding, and control of micro structures at the atomic or near-atomic level. This symposium is the fourth in a series of meetings, held every ten years, devoted to ceramic microstructures. The inaugural meeting took place in 1966, and focussed on the analysis, significance, and production of microstructure; the symposium emphasized the need for, and importance of characterization in achieving a more complete understanding of the physical and chemical characteristics of ceramics. A consensus emerged at that meeting on the critical importance of characterization in achieving a more complete understanding of ceramic properties. That point of view became widely accepted in the ensuing decade. The second meeting took place in 1976 at a time of world-wide energy shortages and thus emphasized energy-related applications of ceramics, and more specifically, microstructure-property relationships of those materials. The third meeting, held in 1986, was devoted to the role that interfaces played both during processing, and in influencing the ultimate properties of single and polyphase ceramics, and ceramic-metal systems.
