Book Synopsis There's No Such Thing as "The Economy" by : Samuel A. Chambers
Download or read book There's No Such Thing as "The Economy" written by Samuel A. Chambers and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2018 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every Economics textbook today teaches that questions of values and morality lie outside of, are in fact excluded from, the field of Economics and its proper domain of study, "the economy." Yet the dominant cultural and media narrative in response to major economic crisis is almost always one of moral outrage. How do we reconcile this tension or explain this paradox by which Economics seems to have both everything and nothing to do with values? The discipline of modern economics hypostatizes and continually reifies a domain it calls "the economy"; only this epistemic practice makes it possible to falsely separate the question of value from the broader inquiry into the economic. And only if we have first eliminated value from the domain of economics can we then transform stories of financial crisis or massive corporate corruption into simple tales of ethics. But if economic forces establish, transform, and maintain relations of value then it proves impossible to separate economics from questions of value, because value relations only come to be in the world by way of economic logics. This means that the "positive economics" spoken of so fondly in the textbooks is nothing more than a contradiction in terms, and as this book demonstrates, there's no such thing as "the economy." To grasp the basic logic of capital is to bring into view the unbreakable link between economics and value.

Book Synopsis The Force of Comparison by : Willibald Steinmetz
Download or read book The Force of Comparison written by Willibald Steinmetz and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2019-09-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era defined by daily polls, institutional rankings, and other forms of social quantification, it can be easy to forget that comparison has a long historical lineage. Presenting a range of multidisciplinary perspectives, this volume investigates the concepts and practices of comparison from the early modern period to the present. Each chapter demonstrates how comparison has helped to drive the seemingly irresistible dynamism of the modern world, exploring how comparatively minded assessors determine their units of analysis, the criteria they select or ignore, and just who it is that makes use of these comparisons—and to what ends.

Book Synopsis Dorothea von Hantelmann by : Dorothea von Hantelmann
Download or read book Dorothea von Hantelmann written by Dorothea von Hantelmann and published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) by : Jürgen Backhaus

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friedrich Nietzsche’s influence on the development of modern social sciences has not been well documented. This volume reconsiders some of Nietzsche’s writings on economics and the science of state, pioneering a line of research up to now unavailable in English. The authors intend to provoke conversation and inspire research on the role that this much misunderstood philosopher and cultural critic has played – or should play – in the history of economics.

Download or read book Decentring Leisure written by Chris Rojek and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1995-03-08 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the meaning of leisure in the context of key social formations of our time. Chris Rojek brings together the insights of feminsim, Marxism, Weber, Elias, Simmel, Nietzsche and Baudrillard to produce a survey - and rethinking - of leisure theory. At the same time he presents a radical critique of the traditional 'centring' of leisure, on 'escape', 'freedom' and 'choice'. Revealing how leisure practices have responded to living in a risk society, he shows that 'free' time becomes something very different when simulation and nostalgia lie at the heart of everyday life.
