Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers by Henry David Thoreau Based on an 1839 boat trip Thoreau took with his brother from Concord, Massachusetts, to Concord, New Hampshire, and back, this classic of American literature is not only a vivid narrative of that journey, it is also a collection of thought-provoking observations on such diverse topics as poetry, literature, and philosophy, Native American and Puritan histories of New England, friendship, sacred Eastern writings, traditional Christianity, and much more. Written, like Walden, while Thoreau lived at Walden Pond, and published in 1849, A Week (his first book) shares many themes with Walden, published in 1854. Both dramatize the process of self-renewal in nature and resolutely rail against the official culture and politics of the "trivial Nineteenth Century." Blending keen observation with a wealth of perceptive and informed reflections, Thoreau develops a continuous and lyrical dialogue between the past and present, as particular scenes on shore trigger reflections on the region's history and legends. Originally conceived as a travel book, A Week eventually became much more -- one of the most intellectually ambitious works of 19th-century America, and a requiem for Thoreau's brother John, who died from a sudden illness in 1842. Of Thoreau and this work, Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "H. D. Thoreau is a great man in Concord, a man of original genius and character. I think it is a book of wonderful merit, which is to go far and last long."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1839, Thoreau and his brother took a small boat upriver and back. Some years later, while in his cabin at Walden Pond, he gathered his notes from that journey and other writings from his journals, and composed this, his first book. Like the rivers it describes, the book meanders through varying territories and climates. He writes of the natural surroundings they encounter and of the history of the region, but also takes long and remarkable detours through topics like friendship, history, a comparison of Christianity and Hinduism, Vedic literature, government and conscience, Thoreau’s philosophy of literature, monuments and graveyards, poetry (in particular Ossian, Chaucer, and certain minor Greek poets), and the satires of Aulus Persius Flaccus. Thoreau also includes several poems of his own. Thoreau had the first edition of this book published at his own expense, and at first it struggled to find an audience. “I have now a library of nearly 900 volumes,” he remarked at one point, “over 700 of which I wrote myself.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At length, on Saturday, the last day of August, 1839, we two, brothers, and natives of Concord, weighed anchor in this river port; for Concord, too, lies under the sun, a port of entry and departurefor the bodies as well as the souls of men; one shore at least exempted from all duties but such as anhonest man will gladly discharge. A warm drizzling rain had obscured the morning, and threatenedto delay our voyage, but at length the leaves and grass were dried, and it came out a mild afternoon, as serene and fresh as if Nature were maturing some greater scheme of her own. After this longdripping and oozing from every pore, she began to respire again more healthily than ever. So with avigorous shove we launched our boat from the bank, while the flags and bulrushes courtesied aGod-speed, and dropped silently down the stream. Our boat, which had cost us a week's labor in the spring, was in form like a fisherman's dory, fifteen feet long by three and a half in breadth at the widest part, painted green below, with a borderof blue, with reference to the two elements in which it was to spend its existence. It had been loadedthe evening before at our door, half a mile from the river, with potatoes and melons from a patchwhich we had cultivated, and a few utensils, and was provided with wheels in order to be rolledaround falls, as well as with two sets of oars, and several slender poles for shoving in shallow places, and also two masts, one of which served for a tent-pole at night; for a buffalo-skin was to be ourbed, and a tent of cotton cloth our roof. It was strongly built, but heavy, and hardly of better modelthan usual. If rightly made, a boat would be a sort of amphibious animal, a creature of two elements, related by one half its structure to some swift and shapely fish, and by the other to some strongwinged and graceful bird. The fish shows where there should be the greatest breadth of beam anddepth in the hold; its fins direct where to set the oars, and the tail gives some hint for the form andposition of the rudder. The bird shows how to rig and trim the sails, and what form to give to theprow that it may balance the boat, and divide the air and water best. These hints we had but partiallyobeyed. But the eyes, though they are no sailors, will never be satisfied with any model, howeverfashionable, which does not answer all the requisitions of art. However, as art is all of a ship but thewood, and yet the wood alone will rudely serve the purpose of a ship, so our boat, being of wood, gladly availed itself of the old law that the heavier shall float the lighter, and though a dull waterfowl, proved a sufficient buoy for our pu

It is ostensibly the narrative of a boat trip from Concord, Massachusetts to Concord, New Hampshire, and back, that Thoreau took with his brother John in 1839. While the book may appear to be a travel journal, broken up into chapters for each day, this is deceptive. The actual trip took two weeks and while given passages are a literal description of the journey -- from Concord, Massachusetts, down the Concord River to the Middlesex Canal, to the Merrimack River, up to Concord, New Hampshire, and back -- much of the text is in the form of digressions by the Harvard-educated author on diverse topics such as religion, poetry, and history.
