Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water has long been associated with the magical, the mysterious and the divine. From sacred springs to holy wells, and from hydropathic cures and temperance reform to the modern spa, Ian Bradley explores how water's creative, health-giving and restorative powers have been conceived, worshipped and marketed in an essentially spiritual way. In pre-Christian times, springs and rivers were seen as the dwelling places of deities with magical life-giving and curative powers, associated especially with the feminine and with ritual cleansing and rebirth. With the coming of Christianity, water was incorporated into Christian ritual and tradition through baptism and the cult of holy wells. From the 16th century onwards, the benefits of water came to be seen more in terms of therapeutic healing than the miraculous. Through the development of drinking and bathing cures, spas and hydrotherapy, a more scientific but still essentially spiritual understanding of the curative properties of water was developed. By the eighteenth century, spas and watering places had acquired their own enchanted and mysterious qualities, in many ways taking the place of medieval pilgrim shrines. Now, a new, more hedonistic kind of pilgrim comes to modern spas to experience a potent post-modern elixir of self-oriented well-being.

Book excerpt: A renowned healer and shaman’s life-changing journey of discovery, healing, and wisdom “Malidoma has kept faith with the ancestors and with his own heart. His journey is a shimmering ‘missing piece’ in the story of the earth.” —Alice Walker When he was a young boy growing up in Burkina Faso, Malidoma Somé was taken from his village and brought to a Jesuit mission school, where he spent years being harshly indoctrinated in European ways of thought and worship. In this vivid and paradigm-shifting memoir, Malidoma recounts his journey home—and his initiation into the healing traditions of the Dagara culture, where the natural and supernatural blend together, and every person is encircled by family, community, and the wisdom of ancestors. By turns humbling, harrowing, magical, and transcendent, Malidoma’s spiritual awakening imparted ancient wisdom that he would spend the rest of his life sharing with others around the world—as an antidote to alienation, a tool for self-transformation, and a bridge between cultures and worlds.

Book excerpt: Exploring man's ecological, spiritual, and symbolic relationship with nature through meditation and thoughts on water, this volume is a useful tool for religious practitioners of all faiths to understand more deeply the connection between their religious life and the earth. Based on the idea that water is the original, primordial mirror, the examination details how a community's values are now reflected in its water, asking questions such as What are our polluted rivers and streams saying about us? And does that match what our faith instructs us to be? With input from many voices and traditions, the collection includes essays and poetry from a wide range of intellectuals and poets, including Ananda K. Coomaraswamy, Thomas Merton, Huston Smith, and Henry David Thoreau, among others.

Book excerpt: Using story, scripture, reflection, and prayer, this book offers readers a taste of the living water that refreshed the ancient Celts. The author invites readers to imitate the Celtic saints who were aware of God as a living presence in everybody and everything. This ancient perspective gives radical new alternatives to modern faith practices, ones that are both challenging and constructively positive. This is a Christianity big enough to embrace the entire world. "This book offers profound insights into a very different way of living our Christianity. Kenneth McIntosh invites us to imitate the Celtic saints who were aware of God as a living presence in everybody and everything. If we were to take seriously what he offers us in this book, we would experience a paradigm shift in our approach to spirituality." -Dara Malloy, author, Celtic priest, and monk on Inis Mor in the Aran Islands, Ireland

The author draws from Christianity's sacramental consciousness of baptism, loving service of the Yamuna River in Hinduism, and the compassionate wisdom of the bodhisattva to develop 'an integral approach to water ethics.' Building on but distinct from the foundation laid by Christiana Zenner's Just Water, this book is a welcome addition to the growing field of concern surrounding global water crises"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Rome in A.D. 165, two men named Carpus and Papylus stood before the proconsul of Pergamum, charged with the crime of being Christians. Not even torture could make them deny Christ, so they were burned alive. Is my faithfulness as strong? In the fifth century, Melania the Younger and her husband, Pinian, distributed their enormous wealth to the poor and intentionally practiced the discipline of renunciation. Could living more simply deepen my trust in God? In the sixteen hundreds, Philipp Jakob Spener's love for the Word of God and his desire to help people apply the Bible to their life moved him to start "Colleges of Piety," or small groups. In what ways could commitment to community make me more like Christ? The history of the church has shaped what our faith and practice are like today. It's tempting to think that the way we do things now is best, but history also has much to teach us about what we've forgotten. In Water from a Deep Well, Gerald Sittser opens to us the rich history of spirituality, letting us gaze at the practices and stories of believers from the past who had the same thirst for God that we do today. As we see their deep faith through his vibrant narratives, we may discover that old ways can bring new life to our own spirituality.

In this lesson we are exploring the seven levels of water and spirit, with an excerpt on the kingdom of water. We begin with the history of water, and the many historical uses and purposes of water; to do so we had to study biblical history where we found what occurred in the beginning. This historical study reveals that there were seven levels of water. Mist, dew, rain, wells, rivers, waters of the atmosphere, waters of the deep and the underworld. These levels of water also relate to the seven manifestations of the spirit. This information is a source of revelation, inspiration and study for readers.

Book excerpt: "James A Campbell's treatise on the significance of water in the Christian faith, past and present, in metaphor and natural wonder, brings new meaning and appreciation to the life-long experience of baptism." - the Publisher "This book is not a scientific treatise on water, but it could be. It is not an historical and theological exposition of a Christian sacrament, but it offers insights into Christian history that I suspect will leave readers asking, “Why didn’t I see that before?” No, The Holiness of Water is the work of an artist, plumbing the depths of nature and human rite as only an artist, who is also a pastor, can. Through Jim’s eyes and his life with water, he gently peels away the layers of meaning convinced that the more we come to know about water the more we will be led into the mysteries of God. I think he succeeds." - Milo Thornberry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding the Way through Water explores how water contributes to our understanding of the created world and our Christian beliefs. As an Emeritus Professor and an ordained priest in the Church of England, author Roland Price explores how water features in the Bible. Important at creation, water brings about global catastrophe, enables escape from slavery, ensures survival in the wilderness, prepares people for worship, and sustains warriors and exiles. In the gospels, Jesus turns water into wine, stills the storm, has his feet washed with a woman's tears, and washes his own disciples' feet. For the Christians who were the first followers of the Way water was important in baptism and in prophecy. You will be surprised by the extent to which water pervades God's story in the Bible, and how an understanding of the management of water today can make that story accessible to all. Take a look at familiar stories in the Old and New Testaments from the unfamiliar perspective of water. Learn something about the relationship between the world of the Bible and our modern world. Prepare to be challenged, whether you are a water sector professional, or a Christian wanting to understand more about water in God's world today. The forty brief chapters make this an ideal book to read and discuss during the forty days of Lent

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water’s wisdom on renewal, communication, and holism • How water, as a conscious organism, unites all of creation in one vast communication network • Includes the research of Masaru Emoto and Viktor Schauberger • Discusses the energetics of water, water treatments, finding the best-quality water, and the perils of bottled and distilled water Once held sacred the world over, water contains a wisdom few today acknowledge. Driving everything from our metabolic processes to weather patterns and climate change, its real significance lies in its role as a medium for metamorphosis, recycling, and exchanging energy and information. Seeking a return to our ancestors’ reverence for water, Alick Bartholomew explores water’s sacred uses, its role in our bodies and environment, and the latest scientific studies to reveal that water is a conscious organism that is self-creating and self-organizing. Examining new discoveries in quantum biology, he shows how water binds all of life into one vast network of energy, allowing instant communication and coherence. Covering the research of water visionaries such as Viktor Schauberger, Mae-Wan Ho, and Masaru Emoto, he examines the memory of water and reveals how the same water has been cycling through Earth’s history since the dawn of time, making water nature’s greatest recycling and reclaiming agent. With information on the energetics of water, water treatments, finding the best-quality water, and the perils of bottled and distilled water, this book offers us a path to reclaim the spirituality of water.
