Book excerpt: Excerpt from Washington Cathedral The purpose of building Cathedral at Washington is that we may have in the Capital of the Nation a witness for Christ; a House of Prayer for all People; a National Cathedral and the most beautiful House of God, which human devotion has as yet raised to the glory of His holy Name. To carry out this purpose, a, charter was granted by Congress, January 6, 1893, creating "the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation of the District of Columbia" for the promotion of religion, education and charity. The property of the Cathedral Foundation is vested in a Board of fifteen Trustees, called "The Chapter," which has the regulation of its affairs. The Bishop of Washington is a member of the Board and must always be its Chairman. Seven members of the Board are Clergymen, namely, the Dean and six Canons. These constitute the Presbytery of the Chapter. The Bishop has power to appoint titular Canons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
