Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Surgery of the Abdomen This Book contains the experiences in abdominal surgery of a sector of the battle line over a period of thirty months. It is founded on the practice of many surgeons, working under different conditions and in different hospitals. The personal equation and influence of locality have thus been largely eliminated. It is hoped, therefore, that the figures quoted may present a standard with which other surgeons can compare their results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wounds of the Abdomen The infinite variety of injuries which any war presents to the surgeon gives to military surgery a special interest and importance. The special interest and importance, in a surgical sense, Of the great European War lies not so much in the fact that examples of every form of gross lesion of organs and limbs have been seen, for if we read the Older writers we find little in the modems that is new in this respect, but is to be found in the enormous mass of clinical material which has been presented to us and in the production of evidence sufficient to eliminate sources of error in determining important conclusions. For the first time also in any campaign the labours of the surgeon and the physician have had the aid of the bacteriologist, the pathologist, the physiologist, and indeed of every form of scientific assistance, in the solution of their respective problems. The clinician entered upon the great war armed with all the resources which the advances of fifty years had made available. If the surgical problems of modern war can be said not to differ sensibly from the campaigns of the past, the form in which they have been presented is certainly as different as are the methods of their solution. The achievements in the field of discovery of the chemist, the physicist, and the biologist have given the military surgeon an advantage in diagnosis and treatment which was denied to his predecessors, and we are able to measure the effects of these advantages when we come to appraise the results which have been attained. But although we may admit the general truth of these statements it would be wrong to assume that modern scientific knowledge was, on the outbreak of the war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgical Diseases of the Abdomen: With Special Reference to Diagnosis As a teacher and practical worker in the special field of abdominal surgery for eighteen years, I have found it necessary to rely largely upon Journal literature for guidance. Reliable sources of informa tion have not always been available and on this account much of my work has been done in a manner to me unsatisfactory. I therefore undertook a systematic study of those conditions within the abdo men which require surgical relief, relying upon my clinical experience to aid me in the choice and method of consideration of subjects, and the selection from general literature of the material which has proved to me of greatest value. The facts here presented are only such as have seemed to me of practical usefulness and as have borne the test of application. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A most interesting book, both from a World War I historical perspective and from the major changes in medicine that are so well outlined.” —British Journal of Surgery The First World War resulted in appalling wounds that quickly became grossly infected. The medical profession had to rapidly modify its clinical practice to deal with the major problems presented by overwhelming sepsis. Besides risk of infection, there were many other issues to be addressed including casualty evacuation, anesthesia, the use of X-rays, and how to deal with disfiguring wounds—plastic surgery in its infancy. This book focuses closely on the human aspects of the surgery of warfare, and how developments in the understanding of combat injuries occurred. Ten essays covering a wide variety of topics, including the evacuation of casualties; anesthesia, shock, and resuscitation; pathology; X-rays; orthopedic wounds; abdominal wounds; chest wounds; wounds of the skull and brain; and the development of plastic surgery. All material is supported by an extensive number of figures, tables, and images. Those with a passion for the history of this period, even if they have no medical training, will find fascinating information about those surgeons who worked in Casualty Clearing Stations between 1914 and 1918—and laid the foundations for modern war surgery as practiced today.

Book excerpt: #1 International Bestseller: A frontline trauma surgeon tells his “riveting” true story of operating in the world’s most dangerous war zones (The Times). For more than twenty-five years, surgeon David Nott has volunteered in some of the world’s most perilous conflict zones. From Sarajevo under siege in 1993 to clandestine hospitals in rebel-held eastern Aleppo, he has carried out lifesaving operations in the most challenging conditions, and with none of the resources of a major metropolitan hospital. He is now widely acknowledged as the most experienced trauma surgeon in the world. War Doctor is his extraordinary story, encompassing his surgeries in nearly every major conflict zone since the end of the Cold War, as well as his struggles to return to a “normal” life and routine after each trip. Culminating in his recent trips to war-torn Syria—and the untold story of his efforts to help secure a humanitarian corridor out of besieged Aleppo to evacuate some 50,000 people—War Doctor is a heart-stopping and moving blend of medical memoir, personal journey, and nonfiction thriller that provides unforgettable, at times raw, insight into the human toll of war. “Superb . . . You are constantly amazed that men such as Nott can witness the extraordinary cruelties of the human race, so many and so foul, yet keep going.” —Sunday Times “Gripping and fascinating medical stories.” —Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is our privilege to introduce a book of surgical anatomy, especially during this time, when classical anatomy with thorough anatomical dissection on cadaveric models has been reduced significantly in medical schools, while the surgeon's needs for anatomical knowledge has continuously increased. In the repertoire of modern general surgery, are included nowadays, trauma and emergency surgery, coloproctology, esophagus and cardia and stomach surgery, surgical oncology, hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery, endocrine surgery, transplant surgery and breast surgery. During the evolution of this speciality, surgical anatomy has experienced new refinements. Throughout this book we intended to fill the gap between all we are learning as students in the pre-clinical years and what we are facing everyday in the operating theaters. We feel that a major strength of this book is integration of embryology details, relevant for the operating surgeon who should develop dissection planes with minimum trauma and blood loss, according to the modern open and minimally invasive surgical principles. The histology data tries to offer to residents and young doctors a tool for better understanding the tissue structures relevant in surgical oncology. Being the first edition of this book, we are aware about the need for further clarification in certain areas and we rely on constructive criticism from our readers. The book is intended for a wide readership across students, residents, and general surgery physicians. We are grateful to our colleagues from the Emergency Hospital of Bucharest, from Surgery, Radiology and Imagistics, Pathology and Gastroenterology Departments who supported us with useful images. Many authors have given us permission to reproduce their figures and detailed acknowledgements are given in the text. The publisher, the Publishing House of the Romanian Academy, enthusiastically supported us with editing of our book and provided us with outstanding assistance. We hope that this book will not linger on the shelf and will be a constant place to return to for revising anatomy before going into the operating room.
